the most disturbing aspect is that she is telling the truth. this is an everyday phenomenon. girls in Sosua and other places might be asking gringo for big bank, but when they get jammed up and cannot get home, they are banging Fausto for the motoconcho ride.

To the OP:

I think you'll be fine. We've apparently assumed you're a Spanish speaking Dominican, presumably with family in-country.

Assuming that's true, and your housing is permanently paid for, you should be good. OP has a free casa in relatively inexpensive Santiago, not a one acre villa in La Romana or Sea Horse Village.

That said, "retiring" in your thirties is really early. My concern is less about your finances than how you will stay active and challenged. I hope you consider a job or volunteer opportunity, or some way to become involved.

Simply chasing chicas gets old really fast, and will eventually cause your mind to rot away.

"C mon" Bob.
YOU may only spend $1,300 a month, but how much does your wife spend???????
That's like me saying I "Spend" $700 a month, and not including the other $4,000 I spend on my family!!!!
What is the "TOTAL"???????
And I believe you own your house so no "RENT", or house payment, each month.
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

I NEVER use "CONDOMS", so I save a LOT THERE!!!!!!
AND, "Viagra" is dirt cheap!!!!!
Just like my "Chicas"!!!!!!!!

I recently went to DR just to see how it was and did not spend that much to have fun. Most of the people are making like $300 a month and they can live fine. I right now live in the northeast and I am fine with the amount I make. I am single and do not have kids. It seems a lot of people come here to have sex, I'm not that desperate if I need to get laid I can get laid for free on a date.

Guys who say THAT, ain't getting laid!!!!!!!
That, "Date" in the "North East" will cost you more than a night with a Dominican teenage sexy,"Hard Body" anyway!!!
I spent 25 years living in Boston.
I had lots of "DATES" with pretty girls I met in the "Combat Zone"!
Most lasted about 15 minutes, including finding a dark place to park!!!

People making $300 a month here live fine?! Um yes if fine is living in a tin shack with no running water, no toilet, no ac, no health care, not paying for electricity etc... I spend $300 in 2 days easy here!
I spend 0 on sex but I like going out to eat, traveling the country, hanging out with friends and actually being able to live a nice lifestyle!
Where did you visit and for how long? You cannot even come close to understanding how much it is to live here on a short vacay!

I spent a month in Laos and Thailand in 2006. We violated the curfew which we didn't even know about by arriving at a bus station past midnight and taking a tuk tuk (open air moto taxi) to get to our destination for the night... and ended up having machine guns pointed at us by the military..... they robbed the driver of all his money and put the gun in my ex boyfriend's mouth.... and demanded to see his passport.... because he was a former citizen of Laos... they held us up for several hours in the pouring rain... and let us go after they got all of our money etc... While we were there, a Vietnamese woman was executed and it was broadcast on TV, for stealing a tourist's wallet at the market...and a diplomat's child was beheaded in Cambodia in a hostage taking... the borders were shut down entirely between Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos and we were unable to leave... Not to mention the Thai political situation has been really unstable the last few years around elections and their airports have been shut down by protests. This doesn't seem like a top retirement destination to me.

My husband is from Puerto Plata and used to live on a Domican salary of about $300 a month but shared a 3 brm bungalo in POP with oodles and oodles of relatives. They didn't have to pay rent and stole the electricity etc... LOL bought 20 peso phone cards every day etc LOL and had no landline to pay for etc... ate empenadas for 30 pesos on the corner... now that he lives in Canada and works as a sub contractor and makes a salary of $3000 a month... he spends about $2000 in pocket change on a 2 week vacay in POP LOL I don't see him being able to return to living on $300 a month when we retire. Not with his appetite.

First, welcome to DR!

People making $300 a month tend to live with a lot of people in small places, and pool their cash and resources. It is NOT a fun lifestyle.

You've got to be careful in not looking at outlier info, but instead focus on what the typical experience is like for an expat like yourself? Do you speak Spanish well enough to carry on a meaningful conversation? Do you have family in DR? Have you lived abroad before? For every "no" answer, add 25% to your proposed "real world" budget for the first year.

A good place to start to figure out what constitutes a "real world" budget is by reading this thread, which will give you a reasonable approximation of what the costs are for whatever type lifestyle you have in mind: http://dr1.com/forums/living/112283-living-costs-dominican-republic.html
