if you were to buy a round trip ticket from the states to the DR, you would pay 82.60 (dollars) in dominican taxes and if you were to buy a ticket from the DR to the states, you would pay the same 82.60 plus the itbis on the price of the ticket (now 18 0/0) add that to the 10 tourist card fee and you are paying 92.60 minimum.

Actually it is even worse. I am pretty sure that they tack on a $20 Departure tax on all outgoing flights also, included in the price of the ticket.

So....if the tourist card price is raised, DR taxes and fees will reach $100.00 per person per arrival. Multiply that by the over 4 million tourists.....taxes/fees alone then represent almost half a billion dollars per year.

May be that JertBlue is hurting them w/ the Samana flight -- was full of Doms when I flew it

Flights twice a week, it wouldn't make sense.

When I took the flight the day after Christmas, it was about 50-50; certainly a lot more gringos than the JFK-SDQ flights. I think a lot of people will continue to fly to SDQ despite the convenience of Samana because it has a lot more flights and I found the flights to Samana much more expensive during high-season.

I find AE news very disturbing because it means the airfare to DR will go up eventually due to the lack of competition.

What is your best online resource for the most cost-effective tickets?

I always start my air search at ITASOFTWARE.com --
It shows available flight options for most (but not ALL) airlines- and the prices shown include all taxes+fees.
Use that info to book directly on the airline's website-

AA lost me to "JetBlue" many years ago.
I leave Boston, and get off in Sdq,same going "North", no stops, no excuses about how my ticket has been changed to Miami/Boston, or San Juan Boston, no getting left in San Juan or Miami due to "mechanical problems, delayed incoming plane, no flight crew, It was ALWAYS SOMETHING!!!!
I would sooner stick a VERY SHARP STICK IN MY EYE THAN GO THROUGH MIAMI!
There is a REASON that AA is in bankruptcy!!!!!

you're right CC, the "mechanical problem, etc" has happened to me all too often, AA is just buying time to see if more people show up or combine two flights into one and stuff eeryone into a plane

I'm stuck in Miami traveling to Santiago....VERY limited choices here either AA ($$) or SPIRIT(REDEYE ) thru FLL
I hope Jetblue opens a route to STI, but they only fly into FLL....AA practically owns MIA....
They got it all figured out....bastards!

I image that American saw the writing on the wall years ago, when airlines like Jet Blue and Continental were offering better service at lower prices. American can no long afford to cut fares to compete in the DR. The cost of taxes and operating costs out of the DR have long been detriment to continuing service. I would imagine that another airline will pick up the slack.

Announcement on cancelling SDQ and STI flights by AA

Santo Domingo.- After careful review of our route network, including performance of individual routes within our global network, American has made the difficult decision to cancel service between New York (JFK) and Santo Domingo (SDQ) and Santiago (STI) effective April 2, 2013. The last scheduled flights on these routes will be on April 1, 2013.
American Airlines has proudly served the Dominican Republic for over 37 years. We remain committed to the Dominican Republic and will continue to serve the market through our Miami Hub, where we operate four daily flights to Santo Domingo, three daily flights to Punta Cana (PUJ), one daily flight to Santiago (STI) and Puerto Plata (POP) and one seasonal flight to La Romana (LRM). American Eagle also serves La Romana from Miami.
American will contact all passengers with reservations on the discontinued flights after April 1st in order to offer them alternative routing.

I always fly through Miami or San Juan anyway. Slightly inconvenient but it sure beats having to swim there.

Years ago, we used to fly PHL to San Juan then AA Eagle to el Catey...... they cancelled that flight too many times citing mechanical issues - it was no passengers.

We got taxied to POP and routed thru MIA - a real pain.
In POP, we met up w/ passengers from La Romana and Punta Cana who were told the same BS and driven to POP.

Not fun.

Never flew them again

Looks like $450 will be the new price floor for direct, RT tickets, from JFK to DR.

For an extra $29, you can have the pleasure of 5 to 10 hours layovers (each way) in MIA, if you fly with AA.

Well, we flew home to US on AA yesterday, re-routed through Miami after our direct flight into JFK was cancelled. We had a 6.05 am flight, which meant getting up at 3 am, leaving at 3.30 and getting to SDQ by 4ish. Everything in the airport [after immigration, we didn't go upstairs] was closed, no breakfast before the flight. Tight, cramped, uncomfortable full flight to Miami, very old plane.

I was ready for a nightmare in Miami. Was a ridiculously long walk from plane to immigration, then another haul to baggage, back through security again. I have a titanium hip, so big rigamarole each time, had to wait for a female agent for the pat-down. I wanted to ask if we were engaged afterwards, but she didn't seem to have a sense of humor so I shut up. Neither SDQ or MIA had the x-ray option like at JFK. I WAS shocked that there were no lines anywhere. 2 people ahead of us for immigration, no one ahead of us for security. I was told it was because we arrived a little after 8 am, that around 9.30 it gets crazy because all the international flights arrive.

Flight from MIA to JFK was a pleasure, upgraded to business class, comfy reclining seats with raised footrests.

We're done with AA until they merge completely with US Air and we can [hopefully] use up our AA miles on US Air non-stop from PHL to SDQ. Next trip will be later this year, United out of EWR.

I live by Long Beach Island and I wish A.C. had decent flights into PoP! I won't fly into STI, they arrive way to late. I fly United out of E.W.R. and I take the State Shuttle from Toms River bus termal, and it worth every penny to me.

.

Air travel in the US sucks.
Few direct flights.
The hub and spoke system makes for uncomfortable transfers and frequent delays.
Especially on long cross country and international flights there should be direct service.
Add to this paranoid air security and homeland security.
On board "service" is minimal.
Whenever possible I avoid flying through the States.
Of course Americans have no choice to avoid all this.

I was talking last night about the nightmare of our last connection from STI / RDU at MIA airport...

I don't want to repeat this again, I'm considering next time Charlotte / PUJ no matter we will be driving for longs hours to Santiago and from Raleigh / Charlotte NC.

Now Delta has 3 daily flights to SDQ and 4 to STI, Jetblue added also 2 more flights to JFK from SDQ and soon Gol Dominicana will start to operate flights to JFK from SDQ, so nothing to lose with that.

Flying really sucks. Last time we flew back to STI the plane was so old and crappy it had to emergency land back in JFK and take another plane. And another time I had no choice but to wait 3 hours in our seat without any reason what so ever. People went nuts as they were not given any reason and everybody sat back as they told us there will be FREE dinner and a alcoholic drinks. They decide to give very thinly slice pizza and free alcoholic drinks. They were generous enough to give us taco sized pizza with sprinkle of cheese and hint of sauce wouldn't fill up even 2 years old. They said they would compensate us through emails but I haven't heard anything from them yet after 3-4 times of writing.

The list would continues but I don't think I have a enough time and energy to complete the lists. Like I said before I would swim here if I could just to avoid 8 hours+ ordeal of transporting from parents home in NJ to home in STI with 2 1/2 hour flights.
