Yeah, you missed something....she was going to have my car towed away!!!!
How is that wrong? Maybe there is a law if two tickets car gets towed.

Maybe you should re-read your original post. Especially the part where you say you weren't driving, you were at a red light. I presume key in ignition and engine running. Next funny part where you say, you had the cell phone in your hand because it is your radio and clock. Now that is really funny, driving a BMW and you use your cell phone for a clock and radio.

You tell the officer to hurry up and write the ticket cause you are in a hurry. Come on dude, pushing a BMW doesn't give you any special treatment, at least not in my eyes.

When I get stopped first thing is no speakie Spanish. Then I calmly try to find out what I was stopped for. I just sit, wait, let them write the ticket and off I go with all my documents back in my possession.

I am just sayin' ........... plus we are only hearing one side of the story

I think a lot of this you brought on yourself. :knockedou

OK, whatever you say, but...

1) I own several cars. I keep the music on my cell phone and connect the cell phone to the all my car radios when I'm driving. Most people do this. I'm sorry if you are not familiar with this. Maybe you still listen to AM radio or something.

2) There's no law saying your car will be towed away if you break two laws. I checked. You obviously didn't. And I didn't break any law, by the way, and my only concern was to no get my car towed.

3) I didn't ask for special treatment. The most she could do was write a ticket, and I told her she could do so. The part about me being in a hurry was my reason for not arguing with her. Read again.

4) Regardless of my citizenships, I'm no gringo. If you look at me you'd have trouble telling where I'm from. So the no speakie spanish option is something I can't do, and not my style either. Thank you.

5) I don't know why you keep bringing the BMW thing up. Do you have a problem with what car I choose to drive?

Jesus!

Yes I still listen to AM and 8-tracks. I honestly think if your attitude had of been a little different things would not have turned out the way they did. Sometimes showing a little respect can go a long ways.

Let's just hope you don't now get pulled over for driving without a license. :(

Uhm so youre suggesting the OP just bend over and let an AMET damage his car for doing nothing wrong? Well you sure are a pushover... ;)

Castle did the right thing in this case. He has no reason to lie here so if he says he wasnt using his phone, then I take him at face value. Being wrongfully accused and then informed that your vehicle will be "legally" stolen from you by an overzealous "cop" who just wants to fullfil her monthly quota is not acceptable. THinking that this will eventually be resolved at AMET HQ and your car will be returned to you in the same condition that it was taken from you is called being naive to the nth degree.

AMET are the scourge of this country and serve no purpose other than to harass and generate revenue for the govenrment. They do NOTHING to improve traffic or safety in this country.

Castle, if you know someone of rank at AMET, take them with you when you go to pay the fine. Just in case the officer did more than write you up for the ticket. Doubt it, but you never know.

I truly thank of all you guys for your sound advices. I'll ley you know when I have my licence again.

Does anyone else long for the days when mAMETs didnt exist and the PN were the ones that pulled you over for infractions (valid infractions like running a red light and speeding).
Where your fine was paid instantly to the officer who pulled you over (or the ranking cop that was with him lol) and you knew it went into the hands of someone who really needed it.
Fines indicative of the wealth of the country we reside in. 100 or 200 pesos and you were on your way. 1600 pesos for holding a phone in your hand?? WTF! *Sigh*

This country is trying too hard to enforce order and regulations upon a populace who understands neither of those things. This country is turning into another U.S. without any of the luxuries of living in the U.S... Time to abandon ship.

NO, I am not saying that at all. When AMET pulls you over they write a ticket and send you on your way. Something happened when the OP got pulled over and the time AMET threatened to tow his vehicle. I may be wrong but AMET might have gotten provoked to the point where they threatened to tow the vehicle.

I don't know cause I was not there and only hearing one side of the story.

It seems a lot of this thread is about AMET retaining the driver's license which is also not the case.

I really don't want to think AMET is worse than PN. But certainly they seem to be out to issue tickets more than organizing traffic. The fact the they look the other way when far worse things happen (passed red lights, driving in the wrong direction, no lights, etc) and are specifically looking for drivers without seat belts or using cell phones tells me they only care about the fines or bribes money.
I also agree this country is not ready to impose fines for trivial things when the most basic laws are broken by most without any consequence. It's as if they were going after the few people they know that will pay the fines.

Yes, something happened. I didn't offer any money to the 6 or 7 AMET surrounding my car like I had just killed someone.

Well, I agree with you on this as I will take AMET over dealing with the PN any day of the week.

It all depends on who you are dealing with. My experience is that the women are worse. The several times I've been stopped, either fair or unfair, I have no trouble whatsoever explaining the Amet, (male) that he is mistaken or completely right. We have an normal conversation and I drive off with or without a ticket. The women though have to show they have power over you, and give you a hard time, no matter if you admit you were wrong or politely say they saw it wrong. It's just like having a female boss, it just doesn't work.

My experiences have been pretty much the same but never have I been in a situation where I thought AMET was looking for a bribe. First time I got pulled over by AMET I suggested paying the ticket on the spot, wink-wink, well I got a real nasty look like don't try to bribe me.

Now PN on the other hand will come straight out and ask for money.

That true dealing with women cops in any country. I , however, have had several absolutely wonderful women bosses in my carer. I' glad the AMET in Jarabacoa seem to be a different breed.

At least in Santiago, I far prefer to deal with PN guys than with AMET. If I am in the wrong, e.g. accidentally driving the wrong way at night and PN are there, I tell them I am lost and for 100-200 pesos they will escort me to where I was going. If I did nothing wrong, I don't pay when stopped, and while there may be hints but I never paid them.

In contrast, AMET are self-righteous assh..es and straight out make up traffic violations and try to shake you down for some cash. As I've been informed by locals in the know, AMET has no right to tow or hold up your car (perhaps only in some severe cases) or retain any of your documents; nor you have to allow them to enter your car. If you have a foreign license, they can't even put tickets into their system, and even if they did, what would it matter, so I just throw them away.

According to the law they are allowed to tow your car in case you don't have your documents and if you were in an accident.
