Add me to the list...

Picked up a bottle of Siboney after reading this thread and low and behold, it was damn good. Drank it over a little ice and found it very smooth and intriguing in flavor. Combine that with the price and I am a convert!

At the higher price end my previous favorite was Barbancourt (sp?) from Haiti.

Being of Scotch heritage I really had a bias for only drinking scotch unmixed, but as the expression goes "When in Rome....." I have been pleasently surprised by the enjoyment of these fine rums without mixer as well.

Still, can't beat a good rum punch for daytime treat....

We must be brothers from another mother! My sentiments exactly including the Scotch!

I would like to ad that Janets just raised their prices from 200 pesos to 220 pesos which is 4 pesos higher than the 216 pesos at Playaro. Super Super has it for sale at 186 pesos and I bought 6 bottles. Now I think I will go back and buy another dozen.

Man I think I am addicted to Siboney.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Badpiece for turning me on to this FIND. What an awesome guy!

Like you, I tried Siboney for the first time this weekend. I was pleasantly surprised. For the price, it can't be beat! :lick: :lick:

My words exactly. I thought it had the bouquet of Brugals Siglo de Oro and to be just as good as Barcel? Imperial 21 anniversario. I don't remember the price of Siglo de Oro but I know the Imperial 21 yrs is 1600 pesos in Nacional supermarket.

And to add to my previous post
It was an offer in a bag: 0.7 ltr Siboney + 1 ltr Coke: 194 pesos!
They now added a CD to the bag. Some dude named Jochy Sanchez (sp?). From the looks of the cover it must have been merengue or bachata.
And I thought they wanted to sell this product.............

So true. I always find it funny how people down there talk about how they like Hennessy, Remy Martin, JW Blue, etc...when most cannot afford it and in fact if in a blidn test they probably coudn't tell you the difference between Hennessy and Remy Martin (and there's a big difference).

Myself I like VAT 69. Cheap whisky, I know, but that's what I like. I don;t really care for the really aged whiskies as they are normally too woody for my taste. The exception being really aged bourbon which is so woody that it then becomes good. A little confusing I know...

In terms of rums I like Barcelo Imperial, Barbancourt, Havana Club 7 anos (had a ton of it in Mexico while working down in Mexico) and Brugal de mallita.

Lately I've been doing the gin and tonic thing, though. Tanqueray it is for me...

let the Vat 69 chill in the freezer for a while...and then drink away..yummy

You gotta drink it right!

I haven't posted in some time but felt compelled to add my 'par de pesos' about a product I enjoy so much. Over the years I've tried just about all the Dominican rums, including sitting out in the boonies at Las Charcas de Maria Nova (near San Juan de la Maguana) doing straight shots of Palo Viejo! Actually it was more like inhaling large gulps out of a succession of bottles we passed around during a cattle drive.

Brugal Extra Viejo and A?ejo strike me as being the best for mixing with Coke, etc. In that order.

However my favorite is the Barcelo Imperial. The best way to drink it is straight up, no ice, room temperature in a large snifter same as cognac. Mixing Imperial doesn't give the best results. Ice also reduces its quality.

(I fell a bit like a rum hypocrite as I am drinking a large shot of Makers Mark Kentucky straight bourbon on the rocks at this moment) ;)

Well the bag for 194 pesos has finally hit the North Coast. Perhaps the CD will arrive next month!:)

I bought this in Playero who sells the damn bottle alone for 216 pesos now and if you buy the bag it is 194 with a freakin liter of Coke which I NEVER buy but for 10 pesos I had to buy a bunch. Now I am broke but have a closet full of Siboney.

Does this mean I am an Addict or an Alcoholic?

Who CARES, let the GOOD TIMES roll!!

Not yet. My next trip to the DR is scheduled for early November. I'll try to locate some Siboney then and give it a thorough taste test. I'll need something to quench my thirst while watching baseball games in San Francisco de Macor?s and Santo Domingo!

Of course you know that if you do not get your butt over to Santiago

You will be banned from the distillery!

We gotta do some baseball together here in the Heart of the Country...

Looking forward to seeing you a bit..

Regarding the continued Hillbilly and Co taste testing: At our latest get together, my Cuban friend showed up with two bottles of...............................................................

Bacard? & Lemon!!!

I could not believe it. I kidded him about it, and he said : "Profesor, es que se ahorra tiempo y trabajo!" {:pProfessor, it saves time and work!":p}

I am sure that the purists will be shocked at this revelation from a member of the society known for drinking rum...

I must say that the bottle of Siboney Reserva did not make it through the night either!! :p:p:p

HB :D:D:D ( I have a bottle or two of that Red Lable (really called Siboney Reserva) on hand...)

My that's good !

Nice one Scott - Who'd have thought? Siboney all the way - and a mere 152 pesos today in Super Duper!!

To be honest, it's still not as well rounded as Imperial but then I guess Imperial has been somehow messed about a bit.

I'm still getting to grips with all the different flavours you can find in the local rums, maybe I should start a proper collection - it's odd really that rum has a bad reputation back in the UK - Apart from Bacardi it's just not a drink to be seen with. In my younger days we used to mix Woods 100 Navy Rum with blackcurrent cordial 50/50 as a winter chaser. Yuuuuuuuuck :lick:

Damn now I am gonna get broke again. I paid 194 with a bottle of coke in Playero! Bought 6 at Super de Duper for 184. UGGGG! I hate it when the guys with the funny accents get a better buy than I do!

just came upon this tread and

in my opinion, best rum is Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Year Old Rum from Guatemala.:lick:
Not sure if available in DR. If anyone sees it, let me know. It's hard to get hands on
