Chinese in the DR
ohh, the news is from 2017, yet nothing happend about those projects, maybe that investment was tied to brake ties with Taiwan, they didnt do it yet.
If China puts $30 Billion into Haiti, $31 Billion will go missing. Now back to the DR and it unique blend of fraud and business.
All of that your saying happened before the Chinese came in....same story but with different actors...lol
What about DR and PLD? Between Leonel and his testaferro El Gato Bautista will take at least 15 Billions.

on what I have seen / experienced in other countries but I will say this... I don't think
this tiny little island nation is prepared for the Chinese way of doing things.

Note to the America haters: if America falters in any way, you will be on your own and at the mercy of stronger far less benevolent countries who don't even own a pair of gloves they can take off. you are 100 % correct....the only reason other major powers don't mess with Dr is because it's backed by the usa those are the facts jack. like it or not....

G, there is nothing to mess with in my opinion. Why call yourself a free and independent nation if you can't stand on your own? The Chinese will consume all the natural resources they can get and sell you all the junk they can. Then they leave you like jilted bride who then has to pay her rich husband alimony.
The way I see it is two tricksters trying to trick each other. But no worries, the World Bank or IMF will bail out the DR, for a piece of the action.
isn't that what everyone does? i am aware the the Chinese are not some special, benevolent people, who have an altruistic view of international relations. however, which major power has done right by lesser countries?
I think much of the ‘Chinese scaring’ is probably created in the USA as a defense mechanism. China is moving into the USA’s backyard and its obvious the US doesn’t like it.
I said it before, the biggest advantages for DR to focus on China as an increasingly global power is that they don’t meddle in a country’s internal affairs. The US (and to a lesser extent the Euro Union) often has strings attached to their ‘help,’ and with the DR those strings often means the DR gov turning a blind eye to the Haitian migration problem and the problem of Haiti itself. That’s the main reason the DR gov isn’t complying with what the average Dominican wants to be done with the issue. That’s also one of the main reasons for Dominican pessimism regarding the future of the DR. What type of future awaits when the country’s population is being supplanted by another one? Is that the DR most Dominicans want their kids to live in? Along with other issues, that one is paramount because it affects the core of Dominican existance as a nation.
This weekend some delegation of senators from NY are visiting the DR to ‘update themselves’ on the Haitian issue. When was the last time the politicians of any country made special visits to the US to monitor the treatment of illegals? Exactly, that’s a foreign intromission the US wouldn’t tolerate.
In any case, I think an increase of Chinese power in the Caribbean can be a good thing. It could help keep the US influence in check.
When the US was a rising power, Britain had an attitude with it too. The main idea in London was that that the US couldn’t survive. Look how things actually turn out, despite the initial jealousy emitting from London.

Until you default on your debt trap loans and the Chinese seize key parts of your country's infrastructure--and never let it go. Then they move large numbers of ethnic Chinese into exclusive enclaves and the host country becomes a de facto colony. Ask the Sri Lankans if they have benefited from China's generosity.:tired:

That may be true but there is enough proof via what they, the Chinese government, have done in other countries. I hope all goes well with the love-fest between the DR and Chinese government. I truly want things to go well for them because they are a fellow Caribbean country.
G, you are correct. But in the long run, it's the evryday folks who end up paying for their government's folly. The big wigs always have an escape clause when it comes time for them to be upbraided. The common folk have no escape clause. The Chinese are in no way a benevolent savior to anyone.

mitch, i would be the last guy to root for the Chinese, because i get reports of how they operate in places like Jamaica. however, i do not see any evidence of any developed country doing the right thing by any developing country, or having done the right thing in the past.
