Interesting catch, Track.

I re-tested the speed on my 5mbs codetel line: 342 down, 580 up!! Insane! I am beginning to think this isn't anything to do with throttling, but instead is just saturation issues on the side of codetel.

Also, I was unable to connect using tricom to an online bank in Australia. I had to switch back to codetel to be able to use the service. So tricom's service does have issues too.

Hello fellows, thank god i was redirected by a friend to this thread cause i was driving myself crazy with codetel, and i see i am not the only one with this problem.

This issue is kinda old, i remember having this kind of issues back in October 2008 for around 15-20 days, then it suddenly stopped in November, December and it started again in mid January (22th to be specific).

I've made all kind of test possibly known, and this is definitely not a client side problem, its Codetel doing Packet Shaping and/or Throttling the speed of customers in peak hours starting around 1pm. till 12-12:30am. I've been testing this everyday since January 22th when my problem started again and i have a lot of screenshots to back this up.

here is an example:
Internet Speed: ADSL 768kbps / 128 kbps, Conection specs: 928 / 160.

In the following link you can notice how bad the speed test is (487 kbps or 60.9KB). Also notice the time i made this speed test, Friday 13th 11:56PM.

http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/2541/speed01nw2.jpg

Now, 40 mins after this, i do the same test with the same server and the same IP (i haven't rebooted my modem) in speakeasy, and this is the result, a full Speed-no limitation test with 789 kbps / 98.6 KB, Date saturday 14th 12:40am.

http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/7852/speed02ub8.jpg

I play a game Called World of Warcraft, and its unplayable because of this problem too. the latency it generates makes me disconnect as soon as i log into the game.

Conclusion: Codetel is indeed doing Packet shaping in peak hours (around 1pm to 12:30am) which is annoying, there should be something we (the customers) could do about it because this is really out of hand.

Hello, I live in Santo Domingo and I?m on the same boat as many of you with Codetel, I?ve had their DSL for 7 years now, I don?t really blame them for having certain problems here and there, but this one has been the worst of all?..

All these disconnects/huge ping times started on Jan 14th 2009, I think I?m on the 9th or 11th ticket with them, 2 techs already came here, the first one did nothing at all, the 2nd one checked the line for nearly 2 hours and didn?t find anything wrong with it, no ?noise? on the line either. It?s nearly pointless to open more tickets but I keep doing it so I can protest (once it?s fixed) for all these weeks with the crappy service so I won?t have to pay for that. All of my friends here in Santo Domingo are having the same problem with their DSL, it doesn?t matters if they have 384k, 768k or 1mbit+ (I?m on 1mbit/128k), they all get the same disconnects? Also the DSLAM where my modem connects to is in their central office at Alameda (close to Los Alcarrizos).

Lately, the DSL works fine during the morning up to 1 PM, it rarely disconnects at this time (no high ping times/slow speed), and if it does, ?usually? connects again at 1280kbps, after 1 PM the ?fun? times start, modem never connects at the normal speed, instead it reconnects to the DSLAM at some random speeds between 180kbps and 480kbps (upload never changes), after 10:30/11 PM, synchronization speed goes back to 1280, but speed tests don?t give me more than 100kbps and ping times are still HUGE(+200ms to google.com when the usual is 66ms), at 1 AM it ?magically? fixes (lolNetEnforcersANDPacketers). I understand that codetel IS throttling, but I don?t think it should mess up the synch speed between the modem and central office, even when rarely connected at 1280 on the evening/early night, the speed test on CODETEL Bandwidth Speed Test is messed up, no more than 350kbps at most,

During the past few weeks, I?ve learned a few things about DSL line stats from ::. Kitz - ADSL Router Line Stats .:: , at least now I know what are SNR margin and Attenuation values are for XD? When I get these sudden disconnects, I?ve noticed the SNR margin going all the way from 15 dB down to -2.3, just by going down to 1 or 2 dB would cause the modem to disconnect, so a negative value is really bad in this case, my Attenuation is at 58 dB, according to the calculator on Kitz site, I?m around 4.2Km away from the central office (my guess was 3.8Km or so, but meh).

Here are 2 tracerts to yahoo.com. first one was made at 11:30 PM when I was still lagging as hell, and 2nd was after 1 AM when the DSL went back to ?DSL? and not dialup.

Btw Adrianb, have you checked the synchronization speed on your modem when the tests give you those low values, is it REALLY connected at 5mbit?

Thanks to hillbilly, I raised my internet issues to some senior people at codetel. They told me on Friday evening it would be looked into. I don't know if anything has happened yet, but this morning these are my test results on my codetel 5mb/s connection:

bandwidth test via the speakeasy server:
Down: 4731 kbps
Up: 716 bps

When I run our video test, the entire video is loaded after 0.35 seconds.

I don't know if anything has happened yet, but this morning these are my test results on my codetel 5mb/s connection:

Something good has happened, very good speed... whether anyone did something to effect the change, well that is another issue ;)

I am very relieved, I think probably Hillbilly was the one that helped get this solved - codetel can move quickly when they want to. This thread helped me realise there were actually 2 problems, the first being the internet speed, and the second that my line disconnects a lot. It looks like the first is solved, now I can work on the second.

Thank you all for posting feedback in this thread, it helped a huge amount. I set up a permanent thread for posting internet connection speeds, I encourage you to post yours there so we have an archive of these from around the country. (you'll probably be glad you posted it there as a reference in future if you have problems yourself)

I just noticed the two recent posts above from valgaav and Jose_R - they're talking about the exact same issues I've been seeing here in Santo Domingo - disconnects and slow speed. I'm interested to know if you guys are seeing things working properly today or if its continuing to be a problem? (mine is great now)

I notice you're both new - are you guys dominican? Is DR1 turning into a resource for debugging codetel issues, or are there other message boards out there with knowledgeable people posting as well (spanish is fine if there are good technical spanish messageboards on this stuff)?

valgaav: I've archived my DSL connection settings and will refer to it in future if I see a problem. Thanks for pointing the line settings out, I am sure you're on to something.

So, after reading all the thread, I have some questions:
1)Is there any way I can tell Codetel to stop throttling/traffic shaping my P2P connections?
2)If there any way to encrypt my P2P traffic?
3)Are Tricom(Cable and DSL) and WIND Telecom good, stable ISPs?

Hey Everyone,

This is my first message on the boards, and while it sucks we're all experiencing this issue (or were? this thread is a little old), I'm slightly comforted in knowing I'm not alone.

I have Tricom, and as of today they are officially throttling my p2p. I've been able to download torrents since I arrived (almost a month to the day), but now I can't even download the .torrent, much less connect to peers.

Hi Adrian,

Yeah that's pretty much what I was just looking into. I never thought I'd have need for one of these services - was never throttled in the states.

Ugh. C'est la vie.

Just go for Megaupload or Rapidshare, and your problems will be resolved. Plus use down2crazy for searches and you are all done. no need for torrents, HTTP download over port 80, no throttling.

@pearbomber Try using Utorrent with Protocol Encryption enabled, it might help you.

Shoot! Sorry for the necromancy. xd

Anyways this is a very interesting and helpful thread.
