It seems like it would be an ideal solution for Independent living retirees, or expats who will only spend a few months a year in the Dr. Hard to beat that kind of value imagine if there was a facility that provided similar value, but with the marshaling additional cost up Home Health Care nurses. Life on the beach certainly would be more pleasant than being stuck in some institutional retirement home.

Amen to that brother! My 92 year old mother is in a good nursing home back in Canada. I cringe at what I see there every time I visit her. Better to go out like a blazing star than a sputtering candle!

Probably bc the Canadian dollar is crap!!

Actually it doesn't smell quite as bad. Has rebounded to about 77 cents US and is predicted to stabilize at the 80 to 85 cent level by the end of this year. If your careful, you can live a decent lifestyle in the DR on Canadian currency.

It's true! It's true! I just lucked into it. Stayed here on an all inclusive package when they were setting up the membership club. It's a three star, a bit worn around the edges, but the refurbished villa suites are clean, the food is great, DR dishes are available along with the usual Canadian and American fare. Two ala carte restaurants, Italian, and Mexican for variety, snack bar, beachbar and Cafe, private lounging area for members by the pool and unlimited access to Bohemia from the bar in the membership office.

Can get noisey on the weekends when the DR families check in. Doesn't bother me. I like the families and it gives me a chance to practise my Espa?ol.

Do they still have the same package offer? I remember a couple of threads about retirement homes, and this seems like it could be the best of both worlds.

Lots of people don't like to cook, and even if you do, there's no requirement you have to eat the AI's food.

Seriously, I have a client whose wife is in a decent home out here, and they're paying north of 5k monthly. She's a little slow to get around, and is a sundowner, which is why she needs to be at the home.

Imagine how happy she would be at a place like that, even if you doubled the cost for home health care.

Glad you found a great deal, Ecoman.

I had a friend staying at one of the Playa Dorado resorts here near Puerto Plata and he said he paid $900.00 a month. Also there seemed to be a limit of 3 or 4 diet cokes per day. not officially, but when he ordered more than that they usually didn't arrive.
They let me visit him, but when I arrove with my lady friend they said she couldn't go up to his room.

They are still selling memberships and they can be tailored to your requirements. There are two medical clinics across the road next to the Playa Dorada mall. You would have to meet with the membership staff to discuss prices, accommodation, AI fees, etc. I'm fortunate to have a reduced medical insurance travel package through the company that handles the federal government retiree medical plan. I have no preconditions. I can get a six month package, $5 million per incident expenditure limit, hospital Of my choice, $150,000 medivac package all for $1200 a month. That's above and beyond my current medical insurance which covers me for 45 days, has a $500,000 per incident limit and has a medical escort on a regular flight package. When I decide to buy a house/condo and stay in the DR, I'll opt for the extra package.

well, it is time you take a shot at adulthood, and realize that not everyone likes what you like. i was born in a caribbean country, 17 degrees north of the equator. i was designed to live without ac. maybe you are from some arctic region, and you cannot live without air conditioning. a possible solution might be to haul your ass back to where you came from.

golf...no thanks. i prefer a spirited walk along the malecon. and, as for chasing browbeaten , downtrodden Haitian hos..i leave that to people like you.

i can understand that you must be bored as heck in the caribbean, where cross burnings are not really in vogue these days.

POP Village in Playa Dorada. First resort on your right past the main gate. Lots of American and Canadian members. Fairly diverse mix of people. Most stay one maybe two months. Frequented by European tourists, Brits, Canadians from Quebec. Very busy on the weekends and ladies of the evening usually arrive on the weekend. Beach is across the road easy walk or shuttle available. Most people at the beach during the day so it's quiet at the resort.

@ Ecoman1949, are you allowed to have both male and female guests? If so is there a limit to the number of people you can have in your place at a time?

Agreed. There are plenty of people who are lazy, or don't enjoy cooking. There are even people who really enjoy it, but are horrible at it.

And there's no rule that says you've gotta eat every meal at the resort. Drive out of the resort, turn right real sudden like, and five minutes later, restaurants abound. Sosua is 20 minutes in the other direction, with Cabarete next door.

Three to five thousand up front, and forty bucks a day for a nice A/C room, maid service, cable, internet, all the food and booze you can consume, and free parking, all on a resort on a beach, does not sound like the worst thing ever.
I take it they don't care about you having personal items there so long as you pay in advance?

And so what if it looks a little weathered? It's forty bucks a day on a beach, no landlord, no contract, no moving expenses, no "manana" repair issues.

Don't know about a limit. I usually have one or two guests at a time. To bring in more might be pushing it. If you want to have a gathering of the clans, book them in under your membership and they get the same benefits as you. Day passes are not that expensive and are an alternative. Never used one. I'm guessing they are cheaper than the $40AI rate. Lots of DR families use day passes.

Don't forget free guaranteed electricity and lots of hot water. I've been told if I buy a car I can park it free of charge. If I buy a mountain bike, road bike, they will put it in secure storage for me when I'm back in Canada for the summers. Respecting the staff can result in a lot of nice perks.

i think ecoman has a great deal. all the basics are covered by around 1200 bucks a month. including food, booze and some standard hotel entertainment. i dig that there are plenty of folks who cannot imagine fitting all their stuff in a hotel wardrobe but having limitations encourages decluttering.

So let's say your lady friend and her sister plus a couple of kids are in the neighborhood. I guess this would be pushing the limit and they would not be allowed in.

I guess you have a good deal if that is what you like but just seems to be too many restrictions for me to kick off my shoes, lay back and enjoy myself.
