Chiri, I like it: Resident Chopos. BTW - where are you from again?

The one thing I do take offense to - and is what I've been trying to clarify with my posts is:

Dont talk about my people when you are in THEIR country!! People claim to love DR and then go and bash how the poor live or the not-so-poor (now) and this and that. I will venture to say that many are rich there in the DR and if they were to go back to where they are from, they cant afford to live like they do in DR (thus becoming 'chopos' themselves).

Anywho, enough of that. Why dont we turn this around.
Any more 'Chopo' style living out there? Give us your examples on how you are living your resident chopo life. :bunny:

 Happy face wearing Ray bans - Chopo happy face!

When have I ever said I was part of the elite of the DR? You're the one whose always included me with them. I am from a very resourceful family who have plenty of money and they made it the old fashioned way. They earned it. Do me a favor suarez, and lay off. You're starting to get on my nerves.

This thread started to go sour the minute you got some encouragement from other posters and that's how it's always been. You never miss a chance to bash Golo, TonyC and myself. Noone was pointing fingers in the thread, you started it. I am so surprise the moderators let you get away with that.

Forbeca: I started including you in the "Elite" group since you posted this:

I think you misunderstood the issue. We are explaining how things work among the elite in the DR (for the benefit of those who are not aware of it).
Isn't this search function great?

You included yourself in that group. I will start excluding you from now on as I see you can't take the heat. At least Tony C. and Golo admit it and fight back with jabs of their own. You're too serious! Come on, let yourself go sometime and try being a chopa for a day...You may find out how liberating it is not to have to conform to a certain image.
I just sent you a dulce de batata and a bag of molondrones as a peace offering...

I have a Honda Accord with dark tinted windows and 16" broken speakers too, no bachatta but my wife likes a little regueton now and then when I am not in the car.

I have started honking my horn for no reason at all and I use the "middle" lane at stoplights on 4 lane roads.

I hiss at people to draw their attention and I point things out with my lips.

My honda and speaker shield allow me to bash chopos without being a biggot, because I have temporary chopo status. I have also stopped pronouncing consonants and the letter "s" when I speak spanish (to do this, never close your mouth completely while speaking spanish) which makes me a temporary Dominican. (until I start pronouncing consonants again) Plus I am wearing a chacavana today, so I am a doubly protected "platanao".

I know my vote doesn't - it says so on my cedula :(
- but does putting a plastic bag on my head when I get caught in the rain without an umbrella count?

MrMike, just because you are aplatanao it does not automatically make you a chopo.
Chacabana  you'll be confessing to white socks next!

Chacabanas are Chopo
Guayaberas are not.

Chew on that one for awhile!

Suarezn:

I never said I was a member of the Dominican "Elite"! I can't be. I am not Dominican!

Oh boy...

They are both the same. Chacabana is the Dominican version and Guallavera is the Cuban.

I think you guys like to just go against the flow...
All for a little controversy I think.

A person is a person. All blood is red. Blue is in the eye of the beholder.
Why always try to put people into a group or a class. They are people. Some good some bad. Some poor some rich. Who cares? See a person for who they are. You may not like them but I'm sure someone does. From what I understand a Chopa(o) is a maid person ..someone that work for others for little personal gain. And if this makes them less of a human then I feel bad for those who are judging.
Just because you don't have the big bucks and are not fluent in social graces, does this make you a lesser human. I have met good people in all income brackets and bad people also.
Why not just look at people for who they are instead of categorising them all the time? I don't understand this.
But then I drink in Colmados. Dance to bachata and hang my laundry on the balcony. I don't have a Honda or a Jeppeta...does riding in public cars count? I get my water from the street. I also know which fork to use when eating in a fine resturant. And I only lick my plate clean in the privacy of my own home( only if I can beat Sniffy to the goods!)
Why judge..just let people be who they are. What would this world be if everyone was alike. Who would wash the elites dirty undies??? :cheeky:

OK ONE MORE TIME!!!

Being poor has nothing to do with being a CHOPO. Some of the biggest Chopos are filthy rich and some of the classiest people are dirt poor! For a person to not be a Chopo they don't have to be a member of an "elite" family! And not all "elite" Dominican Families are filthy rich!

Ok Now get over the jealousy people!!!

Good ole TonyC.

True to the old adage, "It takes one to know one".

My theory is that a "comemierda" is someone who spends so much of their budget on appearances that all they have left ot eat is Sh!t.

This is only a theory, based on observations of it's usage.

To me a "Chopo" is someone with no original thoughts!

Sadly, that includes most Dominicans. They follow, but can never lead. This includes the wealthy,as well as the vast majority, who are very poor.
They are "Slaves to Fashion".But it is "Foreign Fashion" nothing original. How many American Professional Sports Teams Jerseys does a dominican Chopo need?
They walk around with a keychain hanging out of their pants pocket,no car, just a keychain!
They have to have a cell phone, but can't pay the bill.
Huge car speakers at full volume
All these tricks to call attention to themselves!
To bad it's all "sizzle",and no "Steak"!
