Sadly,that includes most Dominicans.They follow,but can never lead.This includes the wealthy,as well as the vast majority,who are very poor.

When I was growing up, I understood that a chopo was someone that would get a woman for you, as in pimp. And a chopa had the same definition but this time being the female looking for a easy score for a person, as in madam.
I started reading this thread a few minutes ago and I am just amazed that the moderators has let it get bended out of shape time and time again. Who gives a darn if you like panes de piernas, that you like yaniqueques, that you want the definition of a comemierda, that chacavanas are dominican and guallaveras are cuban, that you have to go bleach your brain now. The thread was about the definition of chopos. By the second page, I was bored out of my mind by those that turned the thread for their own agenda. You like bachata, good for you. You like merengue, good for you, you like loud music in your car, be my guest and blow your brains out, it's your choice. But at least keep the topic alive. Colon, you are right in all you said.

That is the main reason that people get all ticked of and want to bash the "Elite"! It hurts their self-esteem when they realize that their is a group of people who don't give a Rat's Arse about them. Particularly a group that appears to be living a much better life than they are.

In santiago, the term "comemierda" is applied to a cute girl who is just too arrogant to talk to just any guy. She is rude and thinks you should all kiss her feet first before you even attempt to start a converation with her. We call these girls "comemierda" (eat-Sh*t). People usually don't talk to these girls and usually have a bad opinion regarding their personality.

Now a chopo is very simple to describe. Just look into media gallery and you will see a chopo with every white north american girl who is suffering from the jungle fever. These women are experts in picking out some of the slimiest chopos in this country. Good, you can have them all because not a single decent dominican girl would be seen dead in the arm of these gorillas.
So its all too simple: any dominican resort worker / servent who will come into contact with you women will certainly be a chopo. Have fun.

I live with a whole family of "Chopos"!!!

They are as predictable as "Old Faithful"(an American gyser that erups every 40?minutes for centuries!) On the weekends,"Papi" gets loaded and plays "Bachata" as loud as it goes!The phone gets turned "off" about once a month for non-payment(I stopped paying for a phone years ago!)They throw everything on the floor.Great Grandma "spits" where she wants!They are always "broke" the day after "payday"! Always have 10 receipts from the "Compra-Venta"(pawnshop) in their pocket or purse.Play the lottery.Waste food,electricity,and water.Thake the kids,or themselves,to the Doctor all the time,and for no real reason.Will skip work or school for "suspect" reasons.Drive around with their kids standing up in the back of a "camioneta(pick up truch) Don't know what a seatbelt is for.Hit, and yell at their kids,profess to LOVE them,but have zero parenting skills!

The real wealty, elite,old money dominicans treat the rest of the world as a different species!They have developed,"The Stare",which allows them to not see the poor ,dark,masses!Or see the poverty in which they exist!
While riding in the limousine with a wealth dominican, and a visiting Doctor from Germany,I heard the following discussion.The German stated that he found Dominican women to be very beautiful! The rich Dominican stated that yes they were,and that even some of the darker skinned women were attractive!!!He niether,saw,felt,or exhibited anything "wrong" with his statement.I was once told ,by the sam man,to remove the seating from a lobby area,"So there won't be a lot of "Black" people sitting around!"That kind of ingrained racism is what will keep this country from ever advancing.The rich want the poor exactly where they are.Uneducated,in poor health,and fighting with eachother to live.How else could I get a "live-in" maid for 2000 pesos a month? You included yourself in that group. I will start excluding you from now on as I see you can't take the heat. At least Tony C. and Golo admit it and fight back with jabs of their own. Well, suarez, I'm aware of how the elite behave in the DR. i can write a book about it. You can't help but to know, we're part of their world. But we are arabs after all, not bluebloods. Yes we're in that circle but we could never be the true elite of the DR. Perhaps in two or three more generations, but i doubt it since we do not have spanish descent.

Is not that I can't take the heat, is that I'm not going to fight for something I'm not. I'm somewhere in the middle, born in the dr, but not really considered dominican. Upper middle class in the DR, but not really considered elite. You see where I'm getting at?

The way I feel is if suarezn wants to be/is Chopa/o and proud of that then good for it! Let shim be Chopo/a. S/he should be able to be whatever it wants to be.

If Forbeca wants to be Elite then let her be Elite (when I first read the thread it seemed like she had put herself into that catagory but since then removed herself-my own personal observation after analizing the comments/replies repeatedly).

pare el discutir-Posters shouldn't be tearing eachother down. If you don't like someone, most likely you won't be able to change their mind so listen to their debate but don't argue. If you really don't like someone dont debate with them, why should you care what someone else, a screen name who you will never meet has to say?

To me it looked like a misunderstanding, Forbeca had answered the threads questions giving all the negative qualities that a Chopo/a would possess and noone of the good ones which is why another poster, who claimes to be Chopo/a got defensive and counter attacked. This is just my observation.



From all that I have read since I've been here it seems that Chopo/a's was originally a job title, or what specific workers were called later it was used as a derogatory term but since then people have been callling themselves it taking away the stigma. I could be totally wrong about this but that's what I've observed on the board in this and many other "Who is Chopo" threads.


I like Forbeca, I meet her at DR-K and she really impressed me. She definitely didn't fit any definition that has been given for Chopa nor did she act elite. She was really chill. She came across (at least to me as) as a very dignified, respectful, and educated women. Perhaps she would fit some peoples definition of Elite but I've never seen her act as if she thought of herself as better than anyone else. Perhaps posters see how good things are for her and put her into that catagory. Whatever the reason, I think it would be best if both parties left their debate/aruguement in this thread and went on to better/happier threads.

It all depends on who says it... as in everything dominican, every word can have a lot of meanings...

But a "Chopo" in it's purest form is someone who regardless of wny attempt possible, will end up being, unpleasant to be around with... tacky... and intolerable.

A poor chopo would be a guy who han gs around a colmado all day, talking about his sexual prowess, commenting PIROPOS to any passing female bipedal...

A rich chopo would be the guy who gets in a restaurant without waiting for the seating hostess... who always has a couple of cheap looking women with him... who uses a perfume stronger than a toxic waste site and lots and lots of bling...

So I finally get the meaning of what a "chopo" is.. although still quite baffled.

The reason I actually like going to the D.R. is because I like merengue. And I had not heard bachata before going down -- although now that it's labeled as "bachata", and I'm aware of it, I remember hearing that type of music when visiting local Dominican restaurants to get food here in NY.

But I fell in love with the Bachata. And I heard that while it used to be considered a music only heard at saloons where "low class" (whatever that means) people frequented, it has, as of recent, risen among the ranks, if you will, to be seen as "acceptable" music. How can this music, which often speaks of love, ever be seen as unacceptable is beyond me. I love it. And after much looking at myself in the mirror, I think I finally got the dance.

I must say, though, this thread had me laughing and sneering at times. But it makes me wonder whether this forum is a place for me. I have worked hard to achieve anything I have and do not come from "old money." It seems like people here are extremely preoccupied with social status and proper spelling and the like.

I have questioned in the past where to go and meet decent people in the D.R. In hindsight maybe used the wrong choice of word. But if being decent means they cannot listen to bachata, then forget about it. I want to go where they play bachata and merengue and salsa.

P.S.: loud and boisterous people are annoying whether rich or poor. And personally speaking, I would never go to a country and judge people by their lack of belongings. My heart goes out to those who can only afford a home of only 200 sq feet. But who knows, they may be a lot happier than someone who has a home of 2000 sq feet. My personal opinion is to NEVER look down at Anyone.
