Shook our Windows

I haven't signed on to DR1 in a long time. Figured this would be the place to find out about the earthquake since I couldn't catch anything on the news, and the newspaper websites are so behind.

It rattled our windows for a few seconds, pretty hard...enough to have my 10 year old son come running into our room...We live in Santiago.

4.6 - Just a little tremor.........

I did not even realize that there was a 4.1 on March 15th 26 mile from Santo Domingo.

It was just a little shake-up,
.... the "BIG ONE" will be when there is a "shake-up" in the government here.

can someone explain to me why all of our neighbors are in their pjs in the parking lot?
do they expect their buildings to fall down?

The strongest earthquake ever recorded, the 9.6 in Chile in 1960, was preceded by 'pre-shocks' which caused people to go outside. Relatively few people were killed because when the quake happened, most people were outside of their homes.

There have been 5 quakes/tremors since last night in the D.R. region. A 2.9, a 4.4, a 4.3, a 2.9 and the last one was a 3.7 about 20 minutes ago.
On the 17th of this month in the Puerto Rico area there were more than 30 tremors in one day!! I think that this is justt all normal activity though.

Shaky night

yes. it was a busy night. Lots of little shakes. I have an earthquake meter and it beeped several times. The past month has actually been quite busy.

Were did you buy this earthquake meter?

Let me correct myself first. It is an earthquake ALARM, not a meter. It does not give you a reading of strength. The system is a simple pendulum that, once shaking, gets in contact with two metal pins and sound an alarm upon contact. The theory is that it detects the sound waves few seconds before the destructive waves. We are only talking about 2-3 seconds before the shake so it is short but It can help you to be alert, at least.

You can buy it online. it comes from California and is called a Quake Alarm.
