expats live very similar lives as locals, to a certain degree: they shop in a local store, eat in local restaurants, go to local offices to pay bills and so on. of course there are a bunch of expats who do not speak the lingo well and who mostly mingle with other foreigners but essentially they are a part of DR. hence they would be aware of dangers in DR and act accordingly. but statistically they would be a victim of crime more often than a visitor because they spend more time in DR and have more exposure.

with the distinction i gave i think the travelers are most likely to get their ass kicked. a vacationer is all about sun, beaches, rest and relaxation. a tourist is careful and does not take risks. but a traveler is a hobo who thinks he knows everything best and he wants to mingle with the locals and do all sorts of stuff that can be risky.
