Are you sure not to include rice?

Depends on whether recipients have facilities to cook it. Those who are staying with family/friends will have. But how many are without shelter? In a sense those are the neediest. Then there are the communities still cut off - & about those it is unlikely anyone would be able to get the stuff to them.

If the Gov't gets it act together, rice is usually distributed by them.

Would mosquito netting be a idea?

Hillbilly, bless his heart, has again come up with the best way Santiago side.

He is suggesting we channel the funds through Arzobispado de Santiago who is already set-up to distribute food through the CARITAS organization - and best of all, they are out there doing it NOW. They are also knowledgeable about what exactly is needed on the ground.

Chip still is battling a high fever.

So, today's donations ... is everyone in favor that I channel it through to Caritas? We'll ask Hillbilly to personally verify that your donations are used correctly?

I learnt from Chiri some years ago that the correct distribution is hard and to use reputable local networks where possible. If you do not want me to do this, please let me know. The one thing that I want to be assured of, is that your donation is used fully, completely and correct for the circumstances to get food in people's hands and milk in baby's bellies.

Thank-you Marlie!

La verdad....

First - the transaction took less than a minute to complete - so no excuses that you don't have the time right now - it is as simple as 1-2-3.

Secondly - we all know that this time of year is for a lot of people financially draining - but here is a suggestion that might make it easier on you when you are trying to decide if you can afford to donate or not.

What a wonderful gift to give to someone as a present (especially those who are hard to buy for) - "I donated food and supplies IN YOUR NAME to the unfortunate people in Santiago, DR who have lost pretty much everything in their lives".

Give it some thought! Like Chris said - time is of the essence, this needs to be done NOW!

Marlie
True...True....True and True again..

A LOT of the people who say they love the DR and it's people, are INDEED making a believer out of me....Andd making this "sick as a dog, with the flu" guy smile.

As a Dominican born, I want to THANK all of you guys who are helping!!. BIG TIME!!.

You are welcome, Chris.

You have my permission to use my donation any way you feel is the best way. Since this latest suggestion came from HB - I don't have a doubt in my mind that this will most likely be the best alternative.

Chip - wishing you a speedy recovery.

Miguel - hope you get feeling better real soon.

Marlie (off to a staff Xmas lunch and feeling guilty that I am so lucky and so many are not this day)

Chris,
I for one am totally in favour of the Arzobispado de Santiago getting the money & distributing what HE thinks is most needed. The ONLY request I have of his Holiness is that he takes one more person to DISTRIBUTE the parcels ............. the do-lally that allowed the dam to operate at above 'Safe' level for so long!!

Perhaps (being Christian) His Holines would accept placing a placard round the blaggards neck saying:
"Please accept these gifts with my apology. I am the Dumb Idiot :ermm: that delayed the decision about opening the Dam until it was too late to avoid you losing your homes & the unfortunate loss of life. I shall be back next week with FULL COMPENSATION from the Government acknowledging their part in the killing of 17 (maybe more by now) of your compatriots"!!

That should get him a nice little welcome!!! ~ Grahame.:cheeky:

I'm with you Grahame!

The good news is that Chip is up and ready to roll (perhaps roll from fever, but nevertheless ;) ). So the Santiago side will be up and going as soon as the Hillbilly and the Chip can coordinate.

Thank-you folks and may your hearts be blessed! It is a fulltime job to keep the donations straight and my spreadsheet with DR1 name, email address and donation amount needs updating! So, I'm very relieved that Se?or Chip is with us! ;)

I am so gla'd somebody post this i am currently in Punta cana today and here nothing happen but this morning while i went to the bakery i started talking to some of the employees of how sad this situation in Santiago and also the noel effect which is still a tragedy goes on . This dominican women which she already knows me because i am client said in a sarcastic way that in Puerto rico there were dead too. I said to her to please not to compare because in Puerto rico there was only 1 dead in relation to a Mudslide and that's it. She turn to me but you guys have allot of poor people over there too, i responded yes we have poor but nothing even remotely comparing to the misery that you have in the D.R.. I said to her that my intention is not to sound arrogant that Puerto rico is better or something else but the truth of the matter that Puerto rico has different condition and one of them is that it has by far better infraestructure than the D.R and because it is a U.S territory and some U.S laws apply they don't allow for Shancty towns to be build near rivers. I just said to her that my intention is with the people suffering and that she should not compare. I don't understand there is tragedy and even there they tried to find conflict with Puertoricans i do not understand. Neverthless i send thru donbosco m donation!!!!!

Thank-you for the most generous $250 donation that just came in!

With this, we are at $730 in cash received and another $100 to be collected in Sosua. I'm still figuring the pledges but will have an update soon!

Fastest way from Sosua to Santiago - go to Caribe tours and send it via their express $ service. Someone can pick it up at Caribe tours bus depot there. Needs to be sent in the persons name who will pick it up.

Hope that helps, sorry I am not going to Santiago myself.

I'm preparing to transfer $1050 to the DR for today! :classic: Yeah!

Thank you for the most generous donation of $280 that just came in.

Bellies full of food! Let's continue and we will slowly start getting news from Santiago.

For those in Santiago, you can get in touch with me or Chip. We will be going to the Caritas office downtown so that they can best use this money to get food stuffs to the people that need it.
They already have a distribution program in place and the personnel to handle this.

You can PM me or Chip for information on how to send money via Caribe Tours, which is the safest and most efficient manner within the country.

Graham, yes I received this and I sent you a paypal payment request. We had a poster yesterday where we had to try a few times, but eventually it worked. I'll send you another one now. If you don't have it within an hour or so, please pm me. Again, please check your gmail spam box.

So a plan comes together.

From inside the DR, you can go to Caribbetours and send your cash donation to Hillbilly or Chip. This is a very low cost option.

From outside the DR, you can pm me, and I'll send you a payment request from Paypal. You can pay this with a credit card or with your paypal if you have a paypal account.

We are distributing our food through the Caritas organization. They are on the ground and working in Santiago. Hillbilly and Chip are doing the legwork there and this will ensure that we do the maximum good in the shortest amount of time. Remember again that this is emergency help. It is not meant for the long term. It is meant to get emergency food into people hands after the catastrophic flood.

If you have asked me for a paypal payment instruction and you did not get it, please check your spam box first and then pm me again. I am up to date and if you did not get it, something has gone wrong somewhere. So, contact me by pm.

A few notes of thanks
- Thanks 'Robyn' for hanging in there until we got this working! Your donation will be put to good use!
- Thanks for all the advice and encouragement that I receive on every pm!
- Thanks to the DR1 poster whose BDP account we use in New York so that we can draw the funds directly in the DR!
- Thanks to Chip and Hillbilly doing the legwork to tie us up with Caritas
- Thanks to all of you who are donating so generously to bring a little cheer into someone else's life!

And finally, I received a very special donation last night. My granddaughter gave me all her 'toothfairy' money to send to the DR to help.
