I went to to docs this week to find out what jabs we needed and the doc said we do need to take malaria tablets so we are not shouting "FIRE" and we are not hysterical.

i dont think i have made one post that has caused anyone to be hysterical.

i for one will take my tablets as for me its better safe than sorry.

I guess my 95 year-old grandmother should go on oral contraceptives then. The chances of my grandfather impregnating her are about the same as you contracting malaria in Puerto Plata if you both go unprotected.
Just don't blame the hotel for the diarrhea that you experience. It is the most common side effect of the anti-malarial meds.

Hello - going in Feb from the 20th-27th

And yes - I am a smoker aranoid:

Any idea if cigarettes are included at the bar? My friends have been to all inclusive resorts where the cigarettes are included as well?
If not - all the packs just have the be opened to take them on the plane?

And here (Puerto Plata), ain't there. The downside of protecting yourself to the non-existant malaria risk is that people are less cautious about mosquitos. The real risk, with a 5% mortality rate if untreated, is Dengue. Forget the antimalarials, just use mosquito repellants containing DEET. Dengue is present and while usually a self-limiting disease, will make you so sick that you wish you had contracted malaria instead.

Another hysterical Brit yelling "fire" in a crowded theatre. Those of us that live on the North Coast can't remember a case of malaria here.

BTW, if you have a concern about mosquitos, Dengue should be more of a concern, but still rare.

We also went to the Doctor to get advice about jabs needed etc. Malaria tablets were advised as the North Coast is a risk area - although not high. We will be taking them = its not worth the risk not to if you are advised that you should. It is only one tablet per week.

We leave on the 11th & I have to say that I am really looking forward to it. The pictures look great & some people maybe expect too much, as long as there is sand, water & beer I am good. We are a little disappointed that we didn't get to upgrade, but we will do fine. I have been to DR many times & have never taken Malaria pills. Six sleeps left.

Malaria

Hello all, can't wait until Feb 23rd. While I appreciate all the posts good and bad, my husband and I are booked at the Royal suites and we will make our own fun. as far as the Malaria is concerned, there have been outbreaks in Punta Cana however this is not in the same area as Playa Dorada. My Dr. checked the website for travel advisory while I was in the office. and he states that we do not need the malaria tabs. In Punta Cana, it is on the West coast not the North. Hope his helps, I would still take lots of deet, not so much from a fear of malaria, but the discomfort of being eaten by the little buggers lol. Also, last year we took a little gadget that we picked up at Home Hardware (canadian) it takes batteries and has a small fan in it. there is an all natural insect repellant in it. (comes with a refill) if you are outside, it repells insects for a 15 foot radius and has a clip so you can clip it to anywhere as well as setting it on your table. inside it repells for up to 1200 feet. works like a charm, has a lemon smell and for those who were worried about ants in your room, we had some last year as we kept some food there and the gizmo took care of them too. They just seem to hate the thing. woo hooo can't wait to go.

In addition to the malaria tablets, we will also be using liberal amounts of repellants containing DEET - but thanks for the advice.

You make me laugh. Your chances of contracting cancer from your husband's second-hand smoke are exponentially higher than your contracting malaria on the North Coast of the DR. Better safe than sorry, maybe vacation with a non-smoking Sankie.

is there a rule on how many packs of cigarettes if any one can bring to the dr? Are you better to just by them duty free on the plane.Two years ago my husband just put his carton in his luggage, is that supposed to be a no no?

With regard to smoking - I also know someone who has some trobule going on the 9 hour flight without smoking. aranoid:

As you get off the plane in POP it has been known for people to light up on the walk through immigration. :cheeky:

I also know that those gents toilets in POP air port can get a little smokey!!!
