In re bars: most are poorly constructed, even of rebar, and not anchored deeply.
Auto jacks can easily and silently spread them to admit a skinny (or young) accomplice.
Walls covered in thorny trinitaria (bougainvilla) and less defended neighbors are the best defense.

14 years ago in the campo one night armed thieves came Inside my house. The 3 guys had taken away the anchored steel
bar by pulling it with a rope. We didn t ear anything with the noise of thoses fans an AC. They came in one bedroom an saw a kid sleeping and went to another room where a friend of mine was. My friend though that was his girlfriend who was banging on the door. The thieves tied him up with duck tape and they came in front of my bedroom asking that i open it. To cut long
story short i used my boat horn to Wake up the area and got my armed vecino to pull them away. Thoses guys where from
the city and where call from a tip to make a night job. I think 2 smalls Noisy dogs are a good alarm Inside a house at night.

Well for some people it really does happen here a lot more than your home Country so it is a lot different living here and hearing about MANY home invasions/Murders.

It is good it is talked about so people can somewhat prepare and have knowledge it is going on!

houses vs. apartments & iron bars as protection

These are good questions about security. I don't have statistics to support my opinion, but I will give my opinion anyway. I think apartments are inherently safer than houses for the same reason crimes tend to happen more often in dark isolated areas than crimes happen in well lighted, public areas. To me, it's common sense. Everyone has to decide for themselves of course. Each situation has pros and cons - you are less likely to hear someone else's bachata or arguments in a single unit dwelling than you are in an apartment - but there is the security issue. If I were an armed criminal looking to invade a home, I would opt for the house where I probably know the resident instead of an apartment building that might house military or other armed residents.

Iron bars - well they are only as strong as the cement in which they are installed. I think it is reckless to rely on them as the sole security layer because a tire jack will defeat them in most cases. If you have some other security measure in front of or behind the bars, it makes the home all the more secure. These are only my opinions. Stay safe.

often enough the attackers are familiar with the victim and would be let in. other times the houses are not secure enough, iron bars are one thing, keeping doors locked is different. many folks have doors open during the day, use their patio a lot and create easy entry point. i would not imagine that a common thief in DR is skilled enough to pick locks. force is used when needed to pry bars and gain access to the house. it is rare to see a good job on iron bars anyways.

Did I read this 7dias piece correctly? I think it mentioned his body was found in a cabana off the malecon near Luperon. That doesn't have a lot to do with a home invasion in my mind. If true, I know it was not the first time a body turned up in a cabana and I doubt it will be the last time. There is clearly more to this story and it will be interesting to see how Nuria balances transparency with loyalty to her deceased colleague.

Heres another senseless murder in SD last night, a famous Cuban TV Personality working with Nuria. This guy was godfather tof a gringo friend of mines baby.

there are few issues with iron bars. many people install them on the inside which helps in case an attacker wants to pry them off the wall since window is in the way.
another thing is the welding and places of contact, it is best that the bars are not held in place in four corners only but they have multiple connections with the wall.

I believe Claudio Nasco was a waiter at Dumbo across from the Parque Independencia when he first came to the Dominican Republic from Cuba about 10 years ago. He took advantage of his Cuban education to become one of the country's best known TV journalists. Dumbo, now that is a humble beginning.

More than once I have seen people comment that the weak link in window bars was the cement.

Has anyone ever considered using long bolts that go all the way through wall and bolt to steel plate on the inside?
