Sush,
Emily been not expected to hit Puerto Rico, they've been just on a Tropical Storm Watch on their South Shores while Emily passes by.

nothing changed since last Night,
Emily stays on the same Pressure and on the same Windpowers.
and She wanders on the exact same Way.
the Models are All in agreement about the Impact Location SouthCentral Hispaniola later Today.

here on the east we did not get a Drop of Rain last Night, but the radar shows that it is almost approaching, it will get Wet with a strong Breeze flying around.

no Intensification is good News, but Emily will bring quiet a Load of Water to our Southern and Central Areas,
stay at Home this afternoon.

Mike

Here in Santo Domingo, at 9am, it is almost as if nothing were to happen. Not much traffic, but one would not be able to tell a storm is on the way. Early in the morning, there was a drizzle of rain, but nothing after 6am till 9am. There is a slight breeze.

Capt. Frank Castillo, dock master of the Marina Casa de Campo in the southeastern tourist city of La Romana, and his crew helped boat owners secure their vessels in slips or pull them ashore.

We have compiled a list of links of international sites covering weather at
our DR1 Hurricane page at DR1 - Hurricanes
Go through the list for different images showing the storm as it approaches.

The links are great, but this forum, Weather & Beyond was born because the many weather links didn't focus on the Dominican Republic, rather the focus was on how the island affected the storm so that they could forecast if it would hit the United States. So, here we focus on what is happening in this island. We follow the same links, though, to monitor the storms as their path takes them this way.

Actually the forum was strictly on hurricanes, until in 2003, we were hit by a 6+ earthquake and the Beyond was added.

I started the forum myself because I was an addict to hurricane watching. Note that I grew up in a house right on the Malecon, the sea-fronting boulevard of SAnto Domingo, and was there when David in 1979. My father was a sea captain and built the house solid and I felt that if the house couldn't take David, nothing would matter. David entered near the house a Category 5 storm. We lost our front door, but the house structure stood solid. We took refuge in the kitchen that was a step up from the floor. Santo Domingo was without power and telephone, etc. for about six months after David, so that was a great training ground for having respect for storms.

Now things are quite different. Actually, the Dominican Republic, taking aside all those who live in indigent poverty in vulnerable areas, is one of the best places to wage out a storm. Here backup power setups are the norm, the telephone cables are underground, and people have water filtration systems in their home or business, there are many bottled water operations.

But of course, Santo Domingo, for one floods in big rains. But people for the most part know the vulnerabilities of where they live....

Here it will be time for sancochos and cocidos. Took down the trampoline and brought in my herbs....

Actually, am at work at DR1 now. Is my son's birthday today so will go pick up his birthday cake in a while, the bakery told me they are closing down at noon. All we have had in the Julieta area is 3 mins or so of light rain and cloudy skies. I let off my help so latter in the day will get to work making a cocido!

By the way, was in Hilton Head some years ago. Was making my way back to Santo Domingo after doing my MS in Journalism at Columbia University. And did a week internship at the Island Packet, as a transition between school and returning to big time responsibilities in Santo Domingo. Took time off to see Savannah, too, and lovely Beaufort.

Feel free to email me to discuss naval family histories... dolores@dr1.com

at the Marina it spinkled a little bit early morning, otherwise stayed completely Dry. on the way towards the Airport for a few miles the street been very light Wet, but no Rain came down when I passed there.

Gone very dark central, looks like it is about to rain, but nothing yet and very calm. Certainly not cyclone kinda weather, me thinks anyway. I'm considering setting the garden on fire again to just make it rain.

Yes, this is most likely the dead calm before the storm... at the bakery this morning the place was packed as usual. Picked up a birthday cake and there were six more on the shelf for pickups. The bakery was closing at noon.
