The 5pm update from the National Hurricane Centre still does not show the main track over DR but to the north but damn close and the cone covers less of the country compared with earlier.

Relevant statements:

Islands, and the southeastern Bahamas should monitor the progress of

ABC News doesn't even list the Dominican Republic on their maps.

I must be reading the wind finder forecasts wrong... or just missing something.  The wind predictions for the height of the storm in P.C. is in the range of 30 knots.  That's definitely a double-reef breeze, but hardly something to get upset over.  No palm trees flying through the air, etc.  I know the real danger is storm surge and rain... but I think I must not be reading the wind forecast correctly.

Windfinder is the worst forecast for wind ever... Then when these storms come all the forecasts for wind, rain and waves get into syntax error mode and just throw out numbers

Glenn,
34-63Knots is Tropical Storm Windforce,
i do not expect more than taht and on the lower side of TS Force,
somewhere 30-40knots as the maximum of winds with some higher gusts.
nothing to shut the pants about, enough for a rough day.
for Punta Cana i do not expect anything stronger than that.

Impressive to watch, and frightening the same time.
Irma is a full established pefect Storm Machine now,
running perfect structure, all well fueled.
inlets and outlets exactly by the Book of Storm Ingenieuring.
the eye is this time on Cat4 Force appropriately sized, so we may not see any eyewall replacement any soon.
on the Floater now teh Leeward Islands are in vicinity,
just a few hours left til arrival of the western bands.

not that we would be on any shortage about Stormy News,
but Mother Nature seems not to have planned to leave the Islands getting bored this September.
before Irmas will have finished it's interaction with Hispaniola we will have Storm number 12/TD 12 on the Maps.
it already got a floater set assigned for observations, running not very far SE of Irma in a well moistured Wake.

This is the most useful site for storm information. I was going to mention windy.tv or windy.com...they have a rather gruesome forecast for the East/Northeast...

Folks, do take heed. Be the ant, not the grasshopper.

For some reason I believe Irma may not play nice not only to the islands but Florida as well

Sometimes it seems that way :-( but most are providing concurring reports this time and they don't look great

not so negative, life is waaay better to see things from their positive side.
fact, we have a major hurricane approaching the Caribbean.
negative people freak out and shut their pants and fear monger the whole caribbean and up to NYC every single Bay. Disgusting what is posted on soe FB Pages.
the positive view on Irma:
* no forecast ever, at no point, did show a direct hit of Irma in the DR.
* the Hurricane Force Eye is just the small red dot on the forecast Track.
this Dot will stay over water, no Hurricane Force will touch Land on Paradise Isle.
o.k., Samana will be a very very close call.
* winds to await will range close to 80, maybe 100Km/hr, every concrete building should easily deal with that as long as the habitants keep their focking doors and windows shut all the time til all is def and really over.
* as for my own hometurf around the Cape on the East, to be awaited winds should stay well below 40Knots, so nothing of any damage to await other than the usual already weakened Trees which may unfortunately cut a power line. i don't think our surf will exceed 20ft down here, it may easily stay way below that margin, so no significant damage to await from the Ocean's water powers. Rain will flood many areas here, heck, we get in many areas flooded after every 2hrs normal rainfall, but thats just inconvenience in this Flatlands area, nobody is in danger except the stu's who think they must cross intersections before they are dried down to a safe level.
* a big and sad negative impact we will get is for many Islandwide areas floodings on dangerous levels, I hope all Dams stand their Man against all water powers. the rainafalls will be the tough part, hopefully Irma will keep up it's fast forward speed, thats the positive point on that view.

we have been spared from almost everything bad for a long while/years,
we all knew there will come a time of thunder for us, too, some day.
we will stay lucky again this time, we will not receive a hit and we will not get Hurricane Forces over our Soil.
I hope our luck stays put for the next 100 years, but i doubt it will last that long.

think positive, all of you, and we will pass it with a acceptable outcome, compared to the Dangers of the big powers which are wandering right now just East of us onwards the Northern Island Belt.

good luck for everybody over there
jstrbl, tight lines and toughest ankers for you in the St Thomas Mangroves.
i hope you don't run out of Rum the next 24hrs, as I know it helps a lot.

Is there a scientific reason DR is so lucky hurricane wise?? Every single hurricane season its the same, a hurricane threat, all neighboring islands get badly hit and even Haiti, but DR gets saved somehow.

Its like hurricanes and tropical storms try to avoid coming here..
