ABC News must have read my DR1 post, they dropped Haiti and added the Dominican Republic (And my home city) to their hurricane map.

10.05am CDT: Hurricane Irma close to reaching strongest Atlantic wind record

Hurricane Irma has reached wind speeds of 180mph (285km/h), meaning it is only 10mph (16km/h) away from reaching the 190mph (305km/h) record set by Hurricane Allen in 1980

from what i have seen so far the dams do not get emptied in advance. the last few times the floodgates were open when the water reached dangerous level. i did a quick search and there is no info about any activity regarding dams atm.

not this time, not this time. the dams are arranged to release the water to the minimum level:

diario libre comes with the advice how to act before, during and after hurricane:

the government is getting ready...

How do people protect glass windows/doors here?  I don't see how one could attach plywood, to concrete, like they do in the US.

My guys are using hammer drills. About 6 inches away from the sliders and windows. Anchor inserts into the cement holes and bolt the 5/8" plywood. Lots of noise but is the best way to do it.

I Duct Tape an X on my windows to minimum any shattering. I have also seen folks put plywood in block. Someone may chime in with the type of nails to use, etc.

Another way I have seen it done is by drilling a hole in the plywood (1/2"). Take a 2x4 spread across the window on the inside, again drill a hole. Now use a piece of threaded rod inserted through the plywood and 2x4. Nuts on both sides to lock it in place. This would probably only work on double hung or slider windows.

On the sliders, since there is nothing to drill and secure at the bottom, we screw in 2X4s on that bottom edge. Extra strips that have been cut off is screwed in at plywood seams.

I'll put mattresses and box springs in big windows and patio door. I have metal bars outside almost every window. I will try to cover the biggest windows to be safe. The rest is out of my hands.

Didn't think about window bars since we don't have them. The Duct Tape X ,as mentioned above, could help some and if the glass breaks, slows down flying shards.

This is pretty much the method I was trying to describe in previous post. No drilling into house or window required. Easy to install and easier to take down with no damage to house or window.

if you can nail a picture to a concrete wall - which you certainly can - you can also nail a wooden board. we had planks of wood nailed into the outer walls during construction of the garage. and they were biatch to remove so likely they would stay put. also bear in mind that so many houses have bars in windows. they offer a certain degree of protection from any large debris.

Ok. Got it with the diagram and looks simple with no holes left. Neat. But looks like you have to have the type door/window that opens from 2 side edges, such as a double hung or sliding windows that open from each side.

Quarter inch tapcons will hold the plywood to the brick without having to drill a half inch hole. Easier to install. Pick some 5/8th plywood though for flying debris. If the plywood does not hold then that will be the least of your worries.
