I'm assuming that power is out in Punta Cana / Cabeza del Toro ...  since haven't been hearing from Mike.  I might have to break down and load What's App on my phone to see if the group is active .

Mike just posted on WhatsApp. Sounds like things are still active there but under control.

We are now waiting for a 5 am update, the eye is now right north of Higuey. We have got strong winds and some rain here, power has been out since 5 pm in the afternoon.

The storm course is still 310 degrees and wind speeds 110 mph which till makes it Category 2. It has slowed down to forward movement of 9 mph since 11 pm bulletin. We will see what the situation is at 5 am with update at that time.

East of Sosua, ocean front/4:50AM. Woke up my normal 4AM. Maria is still around 145 miles east of me. I estimate that the center will be about 45 miles at it's closest point.

Wind has been more like a strong breeze and I thought of my sailing days that I would find this .... fun??? (so I'm a little strange) Not that much rain as of now. Not even a puddle. Short periods of gusts and harder rain that don't last long.

I went to generator last PM so I wouldn't have to worry about power going off/on/off/ sputter, fizzle, bang. Turned off the breaker but have a indicator light that shows that I was right. So the dogs are happily sleeping with the AC on. TV went out for awhile but that's back on. Too bad nothing to watch, as usual. (NOT watching BBC or CNN... Not!)

Some lighting but far away to my south. Can't hear any thunder but enough wind that it would make it difficult to hear anyway.

So all is good at this time. Second cup of coffee sounds good. Stay safe everyone.

Still blowing quite hard in Punta Cana with strong rain at times. My carpentry skills have held up and we got only a bit of water filtering in. Im expecting to be without electricity for several days. Many downed posts and lines. Hotels should be ok but probably damages to thatched roofs in general. We'll see in a few hours I guess...

According to the satellite images I looked at the eye wall just about touched the northeast tip of the island. So I think its been a lot closer than some of these tracking paths indicate. It was supposed to leave Punta Cana by 2 am or so according to some accounts but still hitting there hard with rain and wind.

Yes it is ww. about 140 miles ESE. Looking at the satellite image is looks like the eye is around 60 miles across. So IF my rough measurements are anywhere close, that puts the POP/Sosua/Cab area very close to the southern eyewall. NOT good. I'm hoping that my rough measurements are very much off.

Oh well. Guess I'll make another pot of coffee and TRY to get the dogs to go out.

5am TV said 45 miles across...up from 30-35 in PR

So you're right
I calculate 100+miles offshore so it depends on the strength of the south side to see how badly it will hit

Talked to Cabrera now.... nothing yet but wind picking up.

If northern swing continues it might get easier for them and the north coast

headings have improved = going north faster than last night , turn has started.

slower moving but moving away... larger eye (45 miles across =/-)
