The NHC track is about 75km north of the NC and is well within the extent of the current hurricane wind zone which is far greater on the north east side but about 90km on south side as confirmed by the HH recon. passes.

NHC 8pm statement:

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from
the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175
miles (280 km).

Hurricane
conditions are expected to begin within the hurricane warning area
in the Dominican Republic early Thursday, with tropical storm
conditions beginning Wednesday night.

Don't doubt, act and hope for the best.

we typed the same time.
thats why i explained just now, as many people may look on Radar Loops or Satelite Lopps to estimate how close Iram is, once it will approach the island.
the Windforces reach much farer out than the Storm appears on size on the Sat Lopps and Radar Lopps, because they only show you clouds/waterloads, Not Windpowers.
100km for the Hurricane Force also been my guess, so we are very close on that.
TS Force should cover teh whole Island, at least as gusts even on the farest spots on the southcoast.

i would never eat my Dog nor Daughter.
the House Dragon is lucky 'cause i don't like old tough meat.
as a part lefty i don't touch my left arm.
but my pretty neighbour's husband looks young meat, things can get lost in a Storm, stuff happens when hungry.
we will survive and we will play on the beach this weekend,
'cause weekends are there for that, no school, just to have fun

Mike

This is the second time in one hurricane that you mentioned your pretty neighbor. Are you sure you are leaving several times per day to "take your daughter to school" and back again?

I am only 75 , but have never seen a cat-5 hurricane like this monster. This is the biggest hurricane in the Atlantic in recorded history.
Weather is unpredictable at the best of times and in this case worse in the worse of times.
My Espossa and 2 yunguns are near Luperon in a huge cement house. So far all the necesary work is done. I am stuck in Canada.
So now I only have to worry! .... thats only human nature.
Right down to the 5 gallon paint pails with garbage bags in them for toilets. (that is an Arctic trick).
In case of flooding we have air mattresses with special 'possibles' on top to keep them dry.
Stay in corners and away from even small windows.Do not be naive ....this is a monster.
Had to gather 102 year old Grandad in from El Campo. He never heard of anything like this!

It could take months before things return to a basic normal.
As we say here in Nova Scotia "Get ready for a **** kicking" of a lifetime.Get used to the very basics.

I had some levity ; but not for this one.

If you are wondering what to do, not sure what to do, undecided what to do... get the f**k out of there.

Hey folks, there is no loss of face running from this storm; the most powerful in the Atlantic since the NHC started keeping records. If you are not sure that where you are is going to be safe for the duration, go away for a couple of days. Leave a big pile of kibble in the middle of the floor for the dogs (who cares if they eat it all 5 in five minutes, they won't starve) and leave.

Leaving beats having to swim, or dig yourself out during an ongoing storm. A minitrip also beats huddling in the bathtub for hours because the shelter wasn't as sound as you thought/hoped.

Don't be that person we see on the news after every storm who could have and should have but didn't.

Good luck.

Would you really leave your pets behind?

Located in El Cortecito, Punta Cana. Apartment complex seems sturdy but in case we have to depart quickly, can anybody recommend the best place?
Perhaps a hotel inland?

People need to think about those rains from last year up in the central areas and north coast. Catastrophic flooding, and that was only due to a few tropical waves that passed over and got stuck over the country. They were not due to a Tropical Storm or Hurricane. I wish all well.

even that Irma is on a fast forward Move, which she hopefully keeps or even speeds up.
the water amounts of last fall, which came down over a more lengthy time period, are def per week counted together just small splashes compared to 2 hrs of rain from Irma.
and there will not be a location receiving only 2hrs of rain.
if your area ever been flooding to a scary level during the last 20 years,
then you should pack and be out of there as early as possible tomorrow morning.

i decided i should dedicate tomorrow to baking just in case and sent miesposo to jose luis for last minute shopping. he said it was a mess already, packed with folks buying supplies.
he is only working until noon tomorrow and we are going to do our hurricane prep tomorrow. locking the cats, bringing the dogs in for the night, all that jazz. remember to bring your rubbish bins inside as well, that stuff may fly.
Just went to Cabarete and topped up the car .No line-up. Went to Janets Supermarket , was like a regular Friday night ( I Know Tuesday ) . So far , no big deal . My Dominican friends and Gardner have all said the same " Rain ? " And they laugh . My gardner waved at the ocean and said " It's out there ! " Guess we shall see .

Not an easy decision and I kind of used that as common denominator excuse why someone might talk themselves out of leaving. I love my dogs. If push comes to shove, I know they will be fine for a couple of days assuming the front door stays closed. I'm not so sure I can realistically expect them to be fine for a week...nor the floor.

our cats are so fat they would be flying cannon balls, it's too much of a liability, better to keep them inside ;)

we are thinking of going anywhere, my SIL with two small kids is a corner away and a fried left his elderly mom under our watch. i figured i should wedge a thick pillow between the bars and the window in one of the bathrooms, that should stay in there tight enough to protect the glass from breaking. and the bars in that window are set closer together.

I have an urgent and only slightly relevant comment to make regarding this historic storm.  IRMA was the name of my dearly departed mother in law.  If by chance I do not see the end of this natural catastrophe, we can chalk it up to my MiL's final act of retribution from beyond the grave for taking her daughter away, (she never really forgave me for that).  I guess it would be a fair price to pay for 41 yrs (Aug 20th) of life with the Admiral.  Come on Irma... time to settle all debts... it's now or never.  hahahahah.

According to the NOAA, there is a Hurricane Watch in effect for "the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano to the northern border with Haiti". Does anybody know where Cabo Engano is?

it's the furthers east tip of punta cana area. think of it as a nipple of DR titty.

they often have bathrooms without windows. if you have such, you have a safe place specially when on the 2nd floor.
your quick to prepare emergency move would be throw a mattress in for seating comfort, add the drinking watre buckets, also some with water for your toilet, flashlightand spare batteries, your smartphone and the anyways hopefully already purchased foods that do not need refrigeration. and you have a place to sit out what ever the construction of your building can stand against. for Punta Cana a modern appartment building will stand what is prognosted for this area, which will be Tropical Storm Force winds now on the upper scale.
we are now just 35 kilometers away from the Huriicane Windforce line, by actual forces and trackings.
that can of course shift in one direction or also that"other" direction.
such building will not collapse under low scale hurricane winds.
we have here also the Master Bathroom as the emergency Plan Room.
2 floor concrete building with cement roof including steel skeleton in it.
that bathroom has no windows.
it has a opening in the 10ft high ceiling, the opening is small, no dangers from there. it will allow water to be pressed in, thats incomfy but not dangerous. that room would be our last stronghold in case the windows around the place would burst.
we alsohave the master bedroom with just a small balcony door on the backside, where a neighbour 2 floor building is very close along there. i am sure that from teher will not be any danger even under hurricane force winds, so that is a big comfy room with bed and everythin to stay comfy for what ever time necessary.
but the bathroom there is the Plan B emergency solution to hopp in.

I'd say any place along the south coast would do you fine. That's a change from the normal, but I'll take it this time. Higuey, Bayahibe, La Romana, San Pedro, Juan Dolio, Guayacanes, Boca Chica or all the way back to Santo Domingo.

in Higuey you have to choose your exactlocation very carefull, or you need a Boat to survive.
they ahve more submarine spots tahn non flooding areas under noaml rainy conditions, lol.

My horses, dogs and.............. cats, are just below my number 1; wife to secure. I'm in 3rd spot or even lower. Secure the animal food and Jeep?

that would be "me", here at the Cape
Cabo Engano is the easternmost spot of the Island, right in front of the PC Airport.
and you heard wrong, we do not have a Hurricane watch for this area,
we are officially since many hours now on Hurricane Warning,
thats the red colored marked coastlines on the Maps.
the blue ones are the Tropical Storm warnings, they are includng since late afternoon all the Southshores.
one or the other is already issued for every location of this country.
there is no location without beeing at least under Tropical Storm Warning.
no areas are under just a "Watch".
