they often have bathrooms without windows. if you have such, you have a safe place specially when on the 2nd floor.
your quick to prepare emergency move would be throw a mattress in for seating comfort, add the drinking watre buckets, also some with water for your toilet, flashlightand spare batteries, your smartphone and the anyways hopefully already purchased foods that do not need refrigeration. and you have a place to sit out what ever the construction of your building can stand against. for Punta Cana a modern appartment building will stand what is prognosted for this area, which will be Tropical Storm Force winds now on the upper scale.
we are now just 35 kilometers away from the Huriicane Windforce line, by actual forces and trackings.
that can of course shift in one direction or also that"other" direction.
such building will not collapse under low scale hurricane winds.
we have here also the Master Bathroom as the emergency Plan Room.
2 floor concrete building with cement roof including steel skeleton in it.
that bathroom has no windows.
it has a opening in the 10ft high ceiling, the opening is small, no dangers from there. it will allow water to be pressed in, thats incomfy but not dangerous. that room would be our last stronghold in case the windows around the place would burst.
we alsohave the master bedroom with just a small balcony door on the backside, where a neighbour 2 floor building is very close along there. i am sure that from teher will not be any danger even under hurricane force winds, so that is a big comfy room with bed and everythin to stay comfy for what ever time necessary.
but the bathroom there is the Plan B emergency solution to hopp in.

When you retreat to the "safe room", don't forget the rum, (add coke, if so inclined), Limon if you have one, and whatever ice might be left... it won't last, so might as well enjoy it.

Hubby just told me that Cabo Engano is in Punta Cana. So I asked him why they didn't say Punta Cana as a point of reference if they meant Punta Cana? He just rolled his eyes.

because Punta Cana is not a Place when the name is used.
the name Punta Cana is used for the whole part of the coast herefrom Cap Cana up to Uvero Alto.
the real Punta Cana as a location would be Punta cana Village in front of the Airport.
Cabo Engaño is a landmark, the old Lighthouse, it is a spot everybody familia with Punta Cana would know where it is,
it is a Landmark on Maps, so a easy to find refernce as location.
the Cape.

we typed the same time.
thats why i explained just now, as many people may look on Radar Loops or Satelite Lopps to estimate how close Iram is, once it will approach the island.
the Windforces reach much farer out than the Storm appears on size on the Sat Lopps and Radar Lopps, because they only show you clouds/waterloads, Not Windpowers.
100km for the Hurricane Force also been my guess, so we are very close on that.
TS Force should cover teh whole Island, at least as gusts even on the farest spots on the southcoast.

seriously?

seriously?

Yep. TS winds could cover the whole island with the north coast mostly and with a few Cat 1. Rains predicted to be ... a lot.

Could and will are still unknown but best guess and concern should be important.

So, does this mean that SD could be in for a spankin?

seriously?

TS Foce winds reach already 270+ Kilometers from the Center.
it is less on the south side of teh storm, but it is a still widening/growing Storm,
so we def have to take the max measurements.
take a Map of the Island an measure from a point there 270 kilometers north.
if the Storm is passing by that point or eve south of it, yoru spot on the south will be in teh TS Force windfield.
some may not get that force,
i hoppe many will not even come close to get that,
but we all have to expect to get it or we are not ready.

I don't know the ha'penny reference Luis but this is a scary Monster looking at the link you provide!

I'm staying up to wait for the 11 p.m. report. Oldest daughter in Punta Cana didn't even know of the storm until yesterday when I told her to hunker down, rest of the family in Sosua. One Tia said "k Dios nos proteja" when I sent out a group WhatsApp. I guess they wait to clean up after.
And I'm here in Florida sweating all three locals which may all be affected. Publix here in Daytona out of water today, more coming tonight, folks are taking this serious here.
When it's all over this might be the storm of the century for many people.

So the NOAA website is incorrect?

NOAA is absolutely Correct.
You are reading Incorrect.
here is teh NOAA Map and it shows clearly the whole N and E of the Island under Red color.
below the image is the explanation for the colors, Red is Hurrican Warning.
just a Hurricane watch would be the pink colored coastlines, which are already marked all afternoon long for example over the bahamas etc.
We have here a Hurricane warnng since this afternoon.
and thats shown by NOAA.

So, does this mean that SD could be in for a spankin?

SD for sure is, because the Capital was never good at handling much of Rainfalls.
Irmas Rain will even get the fishies in the middle of the Caribbean Sea wet,
double the distance away from the Storm than the Capital.
the Metro can easily be replaced with a Cruise Line of boats running the Transportation system this weekend.

Raining here in SD is not a big deal, unless your neighbors upstairs left all windows open and went out of town for a weekend. The good point is that probably there will be no strong winds, because I don't wanna see plastic chairs flying from one high rise condo's balcony to another.
