Well it isn't happing here in Jarabacoa and the deputy, senator, and mayor are all with this government. The DR does exist outside the capital.

The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) used its majority in the Chamber of Deputies to pass a bill submitted by the Presidency that calls for zero taxes on several food staples. The bill had the backing of the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco (PRM-National District).
The intention is to mitigate inflation and counteract the external supply shocks that are causing significant increases in prices here. The bill eliminates import tariffs on 67 products. It will be in effect for six months as of its passing in the legislature and imports will need to be approved by the National Agriculture Committee (Comisión Nacional Agrícola).
The Association of Milk Producers, the Poultry Association and others protested the passing of the bill.
The initiative passed with a vote of 102 in favor and 67...

temporary measure WW, and only applies to 67 items. People vote based on their pocketbook.

Well they arent doing them where I live, and I voted and will vote again if I am still alive. Education is a mess, even worse than before, the streets are horrible, there is more garbage than ever before, more drugs on the street and more crime.
I had a FaceBook account for about 6 months back in 2008 until I realized what it actually was (on top of having my identity stolen) then I closed it and have not had a social media account since so you are correct when you say I do not follow MOPC on FaceBook or Instagram.
The sad thing about this is that there may be more people in the poorer sectors of the country that will take risks to hook up directly to the power lines. How many people die each year after being electrocuted because they can't afford to pay electricity? It is so sad but many people have no choice. Cost of living has gone up in the last 18 months but many peoples wages do not come close to the cost of living. Two price electricity hikes in a matter of months is too much for many.... 
It's forum which allows us to post/view information about the DR. Although we obviously share some personal info from time to time during our discussions/ debates, I wouldn't go as far as to call it a social media account?
Local producers are not happy at all about it, but you gotta wonder why imported stuff is cheaper than locally produced.
You and I may not agree Bob - and I don't want to push it - too close to politics for me and my ban-free record.
I don't know where Cabrera & Jarabacoa stand on the gov'ts pecking order but I'm not so selfish as to say

Micro & macro are 2 different concepts..... solve the big ones and the little ones look after themselves is usually the case.
Let's just see how it all works out...

There's a zen thing going on in your reply. I do agree that the govt and its problems are far more extensive than throwing up a big colored block letter array with the town's name.
Jeez, if they could just do a little highway patrol, or make the drug and corruption side show a little less noticable. Give folks some dignity. Spread a little love. I myself wouldn't mind a fruit basket every now and then. Just to say "we appreciate you brother"
Being dumped on the market the way American rice was dumped in Haiti driving the Haitian rice farmers out of business...etc.
Below is a Excel SS showing the electricity costs in 'real $s', based on current exchange rates at the time.
If the calculations are correct, costs in US dollars for the use of 699 kW have increased over the last 15 years
from $120.93 to $138.77, or 14.7%. If only 300 kW are consumed, the increase is only 10%.
Granted that the increase has occurred in the last few months, it does reflect the government's stated role
of establishing market rates, free from subsidies.
More increases are promised (through 2024), but we payers in US dollars have been spared much of the
inflationary costs visited upon the local populace.
