so much for ordering a dry dirty Bombay martini. So few know how to prepare cocktails these days, not just SD, even in NYC. Unfortunately, the experience of a refreshing highball or martini etc. has turned into this which you describe above. Sloppy, boozy glasses of colored crapola
Two of my favorite cocktails. A dirty vodka martini and an Old Fashioned. VERY few places here can make them.

most people graduate from the club scene in their late twenties to early thirty's. That being said I have been to a "night club" in Santo Dom (Jet Set) and it was a sensory overload situation. It was so loud there was no point for any conversation. So all the girls wearing skimpy cocktail dresses were simply eye candy. The rum drink I ordered was poured like I ordered a glass of water; it was a glass of rum. The place was packed with money spending young people
And this was BAD because ????

I went to the Jaragua bar 2 times in my younger days. Once spoke a few nice men that I first met at a DR1 gathering at the sports bar in the Jaragua. They wanted me to be a drug mule because it would be easy cause I had an American passport. I was nervous so asked for their number and said I'd think about it and get back to them ( never thought or got back to them).

Second time a good looking man in a nice suit bought me a drink. Then he thought he had a right to put his hands on me. I pretended I had a phone call and told him I had to get home. I paid for my own drink and had to pull my arm from his grip to get away from him.

Got taxi out of there fast both times
That place is full of the lowest of the lows.

Only the rich and upper class can afford this bar? Lol... any hotel guest, local, etc...frequent this bar. This is not a "world class hotel" by no means. Years ago, I went there. Jan's description pretty much sums up my thoughts on the bar at the Jaragua. Back in the day when I worked at the airlines, we would stay at the Sheraton on the Malecon. This was way back before the hotel changed names several times and finally now is the Sheraton again. There used to be a night club there. It was right outside the front doors and downstairs. There were always some music groups performing (Los Hermanos Rosario, Jose Esteban, etc..).

Rey, if you had any knowledge of Santo Domingo, or been here as long as many of us, then you would know what Jan is saying is a good description of the Jaragua bar.

One of my favorite bars, not necessarily a nightclub is in the lobby of the El Embajador. They do have a piano player in the evening. Very large bar and seating area and in the back a wine cellar and T.Vs with sports on. There are a few working ladies late, however they are well dressed and low key otherwise they would be ejected. The casino is also very low key and quiet.
