You might be right about the increase in NC tourism, but I haven't seen it so far.
One can only really believe what one sees and in the few years that I've been in the DR, this year has been the thinnest.

Together with the harassment from the authorities and insistence on um-meetable goals, coupled with the closure of several attractions and the illogical and totally cretinous and illogical closure of the bar fronts of Sosua, together with the totally illegal closure of the nightclubs, this does not auger well for the future.

Far too much unjustified value is being put on the cruise ports for the future that present day needs are disregarded.

I have lost a lot of money, and also, more valuable, a loss of faith in the ruling parties, to try to predict what the future holds.
For sure, my investments here are on hold whilst I lick my wounds....

as Judge Judy says, "if it does not seem to be true, then it is not true." this increase in tourist numbers in POP does not seem to be true, because the only people who detect it are the people who claim that it is so. i went to Playa Dorada last week, and i saw a grand total of 8 foreigners in my 15 minute stay. this is the heart of high season. i remember what it looked like 5 years ago, and there is no sign of an uptick.

Wrecked , and Gorgon,

The Team doubts if you would see a 1% increase and overall it is still down over 30% from the peak in 2006. (758,087). But it is a slight uptick.

You guys are beating a dead horse. The resorts in POP have been old for a very long time. Any traveler that does his homework will not book here when you have many newer and better locations. Put it to bed already. The gov can throw money at the problem but it all they are really doing.

my buddy in Toronto went to a travel agent there and tried to make reservations to a Playa Dorada hotel, whose name i will not call. she refused to sell the package to him. she said that she did not want to have to listen to his wailing when he came back home.

The advantage of a CD as an investment is that it pays a constant, guaranteed rate of return. Investing in CD's in a country with a fluctuating exchange rate removes this advantage. Much better than a CD rate in something like Dominican pesos would be a bond fund. Here are some: OSTIX, VWINX, MWHYX. At the present time, blue chip funds are a far better investment: TRBCX and FBGRX are a couple of excellent examples. You can buy all of these from discount brokers or the issuing houses with no fees or loads.

CD's are a great deal...for the banks. If you are 90 and a fraidy cat, perhaps they make sense.

DV* , Thank you for the reference - it uses the same base information but interprets it differently! Thanks

LT,
I know you have vested interests in Las Terranas - but the team think there is an uptick on the North coast .
If you look at El Catey, the numbers are up on 2012 but down on 2011. In 2013 - 54,126 ; in 2012 53,866 and in 2011 59,412

So it is not clear what is driving Samana Tourism!

PS - I think the CD post is in the wrong thread somehow!!!

LT, Tflea,

Thank you for reminding the Team. The figures are for El Catey for passengers arriving by air - ie Samana and need to be added to those arriving by Boat.

In the previous posts these were those number: El Catey, 2013 - 54,126 ; in 2012 53,866 and in 2011 59,412,
For maritime only the number of passengers per boat is available and no clear idea of how many actually come ashore.

No of Passengers - 2013 79,818, in 2012 68,807,and in 2011 152,566. ( 2013 figures for passengers only go to October but not many Cruise Ships are coming in now )

Whislt this is not the North coast it is an illustration of what can happen - the number of maritime passengers have halved and the total numbers for Samama from 2011 to 2013 numbers are down 36 %.

So a slight uptick on the North Coast is good! No sure what to say about Samana???

El Catey is NC.No?

I haven't heard of increased flights to El Catey. That would be good.Do you have some news?

(They're all the same gals all over. They just move to where the action is best.)

Does she really do that? Go to Italy to "ply her trade"? How does she get a visa to do that? Tourist visa? Is this a common practice that others do? And does the husband really think she is working at a restaurant?? Because the "income" must be much different than what a restaurant would pay... Or is he turning a blind eye???

Sorry for my naive questions which are off-topic. It just struck me because so many have difficulties getting visas to leave the DR - yet the can find a way to go to Europe and "ply their trade"? Wow - is it really that common?
