I find the attitude expressed to be a symptom of a very sheltered life. Actually I find myself at times trying to ignore my own similar assumptions about one thing or another, which are based on the manufactured "reality" of T.V., Hollywood, and the media in general. Sometimes opening one's eyes to the big wide world as it really exists, is requires a dedicated effort.

A great example of this is how surprised I find myself whenever I see how things are in China now. I still harbor mental images and impressions from the 1980's when average people (from the U.S.) first started traveling there in greater numbers. I worked at a camera store at the time, and when some of our customers returned from their travels, I got to see the photos and hear the descriptions of a gray, colorless, country where people wore a lot of the traditional garb while riding everywhere on bicycles. Unfortunately those notions obviously don't reflect the "new" China of today. We all have to keep our minds open, and it's an ongoing process.

I am sorry but I find it hard to believe that in a 3rd world country people are driving Bentleys. If they have that much money wouldnt they buy a plane ticket to the states and buy a car and a house there ?

Anyways I will have to check this out for myself when I get there in November

Why on earth would you want to live in USA when you have the means to live good in the DR. These newbies crack me up lol. The amount of luxury cars in Santo Domingo is second to none in the world (well, Dubai and Beverly Hills can match it).

Rick I am not trying to make you think that everywhere in the country is like that or Santo Domingo for that matter, there are some very poor areas in the country. But there are also some very rich places as well, and there are a lot of people with money and they like to spend it.

Now I don't know what area of the country or the city you may end up in, but if you aren't in the barrio someplace you will find all the conveniences that you will find in any modern city of the world. Trust me there are malls, with very expensive outlet stores, there are world class restaurants, there is an incredible night life with some fantastic clubs. Then there are places where there are not. Which place you end up in, I don't know. What your budget can afford based on your employment, I don't know. But you need to have an open mind, and maybe do a little more research before you actually touch down in country. Quite frankly your opening post was a bit condescending to say the least.

honda is a second most popular brand in DR. accord of civic are nothing, no one will ever look at them, those are sankies cars at best. cars for poor chops, if you prefer. i have seen more expensive cars in SD than in london. heck, you don't have to go to SD, one of miesposo's uncles has a phantom and he lives in a small campo of puerto plata...

Is this guy for real, at the risk of losing my anonymity, where I live (Cerros de Gurabo) there are probably more luxury cars than this guy has ever seen back home. My next door neighbor has a Ferrari 430 Scuderia Spider 16m. This is a limited edition car, only 170 of them made worldwide.

Down the street from him is another neighbor with a very beautiful Aston Martin DBS Volante, just to drop a few names of car around my hood.

The gist of it is, I?ve seen them all here in lil old DR, from the Oh so beautiful Maserati Grandturismo MC, to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. There is only but car that I?ve yet to see here and that?s a Bugatti Veyron.

Sorry buddy but a Honda Accord will not make you stand out amongst your peers in this third world country.

If Americans have so much money, why do they buy planes tickets and buy their houses here? Casa de Campo.... Cap. Cana... and that doesn't include the houses and penthouses in the city.

This city is full of fun if you have the $$$$.... We have the nickname Wonderland for a reason.

The only people that want to leave this country are poor people.

Voting with their feet

I do not think so.
The typical yola passenger is a teacher, a nurse, a deportee, a few licenciado(a)s of various specialities, etc.
Middle class people more or less.

If i would buy a car in D.R. and wanted to keep it modest i would go for a smaller size suv; something like a Honda CRV, 4runner, or Rav4. i wouldnt go for a sedan because of the poor road conditions, and i wouldnt get a full size suv because of the high gas prices.

For a foreigner thinking about buying a car, i would suggest looking into places where his car will be stored/parked. Does your office have private parking w/guard(watchy-man). Also your house/apartment should have the same setup.

Ok, lets not get too excited about a few rich americans driving cars to show of to the poor Dominicans. I am sure that this place is not like the Monte Carlo that you describe it to be. I was in La Romana 4 years ago and all i saw were motor bikes and beat up pick ups. In any event I will come and see for myself but I am sure that anybody who can afford 15k for a car would be a target in a desperate third world country.

oh ricky ricky ricky. Comparing (parts of) La Romana to (parts of) SD is like comparing a pig farm to a castle.

I do look forward to your followup :) Please do keep us informed! (if you aren't a troll!)

Is your company renting you a place? Do you know where?

Hello,

I am going to SD and obviously being safe is the top priority anytime you are living in an impoverished nation. I will be working for two years. I have always liked to drive a nice car. I have a 2008 honda accord right now. Would I stand out and asked to be robbed if I buy something like that or like a newer Honda Civic. I dont want to flaunt my wealth but I do like my luxuries.

Yeah Dont be too Flashy with that 4 year old Honda Accord or Honda civic??? Hope the guy in the BMW 7 series doesnt hit his door off your ride in the Diamond mall. SMH

After a night of heavy boozing and womanizing,

How do you think I feel? Everytime I peel outta the Jaragua Casino parking lot, DRIVING THIS.....(photo below).....while listening to "All my ex's live in Texas" blaring FULL BLAST.......I don't get noticed....no one gives ME a second thought....(or look)...

Nobody gives a flying F--K about some crappy 15K Honda........it is what it is. I don't know why this makes you so uncomfortable, did you really think you were gonna rule the DR, and somehow be the MAN down here with a HONDA???

Dude ya gotta get ya nose outta the clouds and come back to EARTH, and rejoin us.......

And by the way......(recent additions to the DR)......we also have running water, air conditioning, and that new invention called the "TELEPHONE"....so I would imagine you would feel good about that.

The thing that you can't seem or refuse to wrap your head around (there is that condescending attitude again) is that the people who are driving those cars around for the most part aren't Americans, Europeans or anything else, they are Dominicans. Once you understand that you will begin to understand what the majority of us are telling you.

From the DR1 news section on the home page...

"New car sales down 10%
The Association of Manufacturers Concessionaires for Motor Vehicles (Acofave) reported that new car sales are 10% lower than a year ago. They said, moreover, that despite the constant fuel price increases, SUV sales had increased by 44.66% in the first six months of the year and 4% over the last twelve months.

The executive vice-president of Acofave, Enrique Fernandez, attributed the fall in general sales to the increase in bank lending rates. He said Dominicans continue to prefer SUVs given the poor condition of many of the roads and the flooding that occurs during the rainy season.

He said that the association members had sold just over 8,500 new vehicles in the first half of the year, compared to just under 9,500 last year. The auto dealer spokesman noted that the import of used vehicles was nearly twice the number of new car sales."
