There is a vet clinic in Jamao today. I took advantage and asked one of the vets if dogs can infect people with scabies. The vet instantly replied, “Yes!” She said that she has gotten scabies from dogs several times.

(Sorry, Jan- I think it was you who said you sleep with three dogs.)

She said to give the dogs invermectin, and for herself, she said that she uses Permethrin and invermectin and it clears right up.

So I drove right to the farmacia and what do you think I bought!?!

Just to give an update…. At the urging of some friends I added invermectin to the regimen the dermatologist ordered. I had my third appointment with her and she released me as clear.

Then the itching started all over again. All in different places. My hands and feet are clear. But my back and scalp- where usually the scabies are not interested - are bothering me.

We still are washing clothing, towels and sheets daily. So now I will restart the treatment with Permethrin.

Truly. This ain’t for sissies.

Invectimin does not kill the larva, if a medical doctor-- that I talked to recently --is to be believed.

He says that is why treatment is in 2-times.
The first to fight off the out-break, invectimin does the job, the 2nd to kill off larva/eggs that were incubating, that's where the emulsions/creams ( penathin ? spelling ) come in to play.

Thanks. I did the ivermectin. Almost all are gone. Just every day I see a spot or two or three in new locations and I use the Permethrin again on those spots just in case. And still we are changing sheets and towels and washing and drying in hot water.

This is not for sissies.

I got scabies about 5 years ago, the famous 'one armed Doc of Basura Chica' diagnosed it immediately; he 'prescribed' permethrin cream and two applications on the affected area and them 'lil critters went to sleep permanently

Update. Am STILL fighting the scabies war. I have read everything available about scabies. I should own stock in Permethrin by now. Am using it daily and nightly. Washing sheets and towels and all clothes daily in hot water and drying them in hot heat. Am spraying insecticide on all my furniture. And have taken ivermectin twice. And treated my dogs twice.

No one in this country seems to have benzyl benzoate, so I have ordered it on Amazon.

I am desperate to get rid of it- especially prior to going to the US in 2 1/2 weeks. I have an anal son who does not want me in his house if I have scabies (and I understand)

Wish there was a magic formula.

And beware who you sit close to, hug, and shake hands with. You never know…

Perhaps someone or something close to you is re-infecting you.

I agree! But who? No one in my house has scabies. None of my teachers have it.

There is only one possibility I can come up with.
I adopted a huge street dog a few months back. I treated him and my other dogs with Nexguard Spectra. It’s expensive and you are to repeat it monthly. Instead of doing so, at the end of one month I treated all the dogs with Advantage. That is a liquid you put on the skin behind the dog’s head. Then I thought maybe the dosage wasn’t sufficient for this big dog. He weighs about 150 pounds and both treatments had the dog size up to 110 pounds. So yesterday I bought one Nexguard for a 110 pound dog and one for a 20 pound dog. Together they cost 3,000 pesos. Put the pills in his food. Thought this would surely resolve the problem. And one hour later he vomited up the food and pills.

I just cannot win! Oh- and by the way in my daily scabies research I read that dogs can carry mites but not the scabies mite.

As many of you know, I live in the mountain Pueblo of Jamao. I always say the the true heart of the DR is in Jamao. Everybody knows everybody. We hug as we pass on the street.

Making matters more complicated- or wonderful- depending on how you look at it, I give every child a hug when they arrive at school each day. And if something goes wrong, I give a hug to make it better. Usually works.

To make a long story short, I had a rash that I thought was caused by an allergic reaction to the filtration in our little school. My teachers had it too.

But eventually it was intolerable and I went to a dermatologist. Turns out I have scabies! Where I come from only the poor, dirty people get scabies.

I have since learned it is endemic in this country.

I am telling you the treatment is as difficult as the itching. I must change my sheets daily. Wash them and dry them on high heat. Iron them. Do the same with towels and all clothes.

The doc has me using an insecticide lotion three times a week. But the scabies keep cropping up in new places. The itching makes me crazy.

I am in my third week of treatment and still, they are there.

Just a warning to you all to be careful of who you choose to touch or hug or be
Intimate with.

This is not pleasant.
wow sorry to hear this must be painful as far as hugging people for me I'm always afraid if I hug a stranger then we'll try to pick pocket me.

Have you had a lab test done to confirm you have scabies? Itching and rash are common side effects of permethrin - especially as much and as often as you are using it. It is a pesticide and toxic in large dosages.

I was being treated by a dermatologist weekly for a month. Every time I saw her she said the same thing. Wash sheets and towels daily. Do not use clothing twice without washing. And use the Permathrin.

I would assume the dermatologist knows what scabies look like…..and from the photos available on the web, that looks like exactly what I have.

Doctors do make mistakes. Ask me how I know. Also, you might have have scabies in the beginning and now it's an allergic reaction to the permathrin(?). I have never seen any recommendation to continually use it every day. I would go see another dermatologist at this point. Something isn't right.

Actually, the doctor said to use it for three days and then stop. When I went back the following week she said to use it three days and stop. And continues with these same instructions. It would subside and then come back again. I was getting desperate so I began using it daily.

I agree with you that it is not a particularly good practice to increase the usage. But I was feeling desperate.

Interestly, I am getting private messages from people who are experiencing or who have had the same thing.

Correct my esteemed colleague of the money transfer debate! Scabies is an infectious disease and perhaps the run of the mill dermo is not making the grade. If scabies continue to infestate you will develop spreading and worsening of symptoms. This can lead to a very nasty stage known as Norwegian scabies. Treatment with benzene based creams should normally work in a week. That said, benzene is horribly toxic to the human body. Time to see an infectious disease specialist. Someone who needed more than a liceo diploma and a cédula to get into med school.

Maybe the scabies here are becoming resistant to permethrin(?). Constantly covering your body with a pesticide can't be good for you.
