*#@! Disneyland.......

Very well said cather...Having millitary patrolling for hookers is just a perfect example of what a joke the curent regime is..This will surely turn tourist away more then a few hookers and hard working Dominicans selling some very good chicken...

Lets just sit back and watch the people get desperate with no tourist $$$$, and watch the crime rise..:pirate:

To sum it up, Sosua is not, and will never become a first class tourist destination..It is what it is...The beach is full of empty shacks, and there are more vacant lots and buildings then in Detroit U.S.A......

Yea, i can see it now after the Super Bowl, Hey, Tom Brady what are you doing after the game? I'M going to Sosua....Yea right..

The meeting last night of ADSS consisted of business owners, large and small, and concerned citizens who are interested in revitalizing Sosua with special events and activities similar to those held in Cabarete, where the Jazz Festival recently took place.

Many of the individuals participating are the very same people who serve on committees for the Cabarete events. In other words, they hold the knowledge of how to go about it and get things done.

Pictures speak louder than words. Here are photos of the meeting and slide presentation. It will give you an idea of the type of events considered and the various topics covered in the meeting.

I took another walk-through Pedro Clisante last night, and noticed several points of interest.

The first thing that struck me was how few people there were on the street and in the bars. The second thing I noticed was that the Merengue Bar had removed the curtain it had installed earlier. I'm not sure if it will stay down or not, but it looks a lot better without it.

The only bar that seems to have complied with the "walls and windows" edict was Latino's, which isn't a huge surprise. And coincidentally, Latino's had the fewest number of customers at the bar, only 2 or 3, from what I could see. Man are those windows UGLY!

There was also an abundance of police and military driving and walking around, exactly the way it was reported in the original post.

The whole scene lacked any sense of vibrancy. Everything seemed stifled and lack-luster, not at all what tourists are looking for when attempting to unwind on their annual two-week holiday. It's as though the character of an exotic tropical getaway has been sucked out of the place.

I'll take the old Sosua anytime, (minus a few ladrones and drug-dealers, of course). At least it had some life and character. This bland and neutered new version lacks the essential charm and appeal of the old, and is a very dull and uninteresting substitute, in my opinion.

You forgot the most important. Cuba will probably very soon be open for American tourists.

Other money will flow in - not all tourists in the world are atracted by chicas ... Cabarete is atracting money not becouse of the chicas.

The policy of the Mayor's office towards the Sosua, I think, lays in the ideas to clean up the beach (make it similar to Cabarete) and get rid of the Cheramicos and las Piedras. This can be done soon after all the present tourists will depart and it will become a ghost town.

It's all money issues - she came here for long years and she is trying to impliment her financial plans (and personal also). You have to remember that people who come to power (any level) are seeking first - to compensate the election expences and second - to become more wealthy. If you take the new Mayor of Sosua - she is clever and intellegent - so I think that Sosua will live but with new "face" and rules.

I think that during the time of downturn in Sosua some of the land and properties would be bought by .... you will be surprised by whom. For the simvolic price. And then when the new Sosua will appear - those land lots will be golden. You have to understand if a person controls everything in the country (named Sosua) this person will do everything to benefit from this position (we are not included in this list of beneficiaries).

I gave only my opinion on this topic!

No, I don't want a ghost town. That is most certainly not the way I like it.

For some reason or other, many seem to think only in extremes. Either the streets are full of prostitutes, pushers sellilng those blue pills, money changers and Haitian kids, or Sosua is a ghost town.

There is a middle ground. I have seen it in Sosua before, and I am sure that I will see it again.

never said it did. if you have ever been to any of those countries (sounds like you haven't) they have beaches, nightlife, good food, an ex-pat population, and are not so dependent on tourism AND the airfare is comparable.

and for you, they are plenty of men around. how does it feel to not be attracted to chicas ? :ermm:

I was looking forward for my winter vacation, now I wonder!
Just can't imagine sitting at El Flow seeing nobody on the streets accept military and police... My beer will go sour!

No it won't. It's going to remain exactly as it is. If you're American, you'll have to keep sneaking into Cuba from another country if you want to visit.

I think you may have solved the Mayor's logic.

What's the most effective way to get rid of rats? Secure the food so that they can't feed. They will leave and go where the available food is. Take away the cash flow and there's no money for drugs and moto's and nobody to steal from.

The old "bad element" will leave Sosua, LE will then establish control and then as the new "bad element" moves in to fill the void they will find "no food" and move on.

A few weeks ago after leaving The Boathouse where I watched the Jets game on Sunday night the streets of Boca Chica were dead as the weekend was winding down but as we drove through San Andres every bar was overflowing into the streets and the place was in full party mode. I didn't spot a single (obvious) tourist among the revellers. It dawned on me that the money made in BC over the weekend was being redistributed in San Andres.

Boca Chica is not dead (far from it) but has morphed into a different genre of theater. San Andres is proof of this. The Mayor knows this. She is applying a proven formula and by the end of her term she will be credited with the cleanup and resultant new prosperity. She may not be very original but damn she's sharp!
