Yes i can afford a Cayman, yes i can afford maintenance of 8-12k a year. However, by asking i can decide if i want to pay that, i like to know upfront ...i.e is it worth it?. I dont mind paying money for a new brake kit ; valued at $2 - $3000 ..... i might be cool with that... then i have to pay import tax on top....Im not cool with that. Thats why i ask what things REALLY COST

So your saying wealthy people who can afford a Rolls Royce worries about and ask the cost of a brake job???? Dude you drive a "BOXSTER" with a hard top. You are NOT in the class of Porsche 911 Turbo S owner or an Aston Martin Vanquish.

Can you see an owner of an Aston Martin Vanquish calling around to find a cheap mechanic or trying to find out the cost of an oil change???? Are you serious????

An Aston Martin owner does not say "how much is an oil change" he says " I NEED AN OIL CHANGE"

If you are checking around for the cost of maintenance maybe you are not as "wealthy" as you may think.

Actually, they very may well be.

I have a 530i (which is admittedly not a 911 or Vanquish). Got it used through the dealership's certified program (100k mile warranty vs. 40k for new). It cost one-third less than new, and got a 1% interest note. After some research, I did my own oil changes, performed routine maintenance and started looking for a fairly priced mechanic when the warranty had about 10k left.

That was 11 years and 220k miles ago. The car still looks great (the 1998-2004 body styles were their best ever), runs exceptionally well, and I place the money I would have spent on leases, new car depreciation, and pricey dealership maintenance/repairs in investments. When I want another ride, I'll have the cash on hand for it.

Moral of the story: get a solid used car, take very good care of it, and drive it into the ground. If you don't own a business where it's a write-off, leasing or buying new is just burning cash for its own sake.

I know quite a few folks who own exceptionally fine cars, and largely do the same thing. Many of us, frankly, are thinking more about the Tesla, which is cheaper in the long run in fuel costs. In addition, the Model S has a fully transferable 8 year unlimited miles warranty, with extensions after the 8th year for an additional 50k miles for $4,000. That's an excellent ROI.

Some of you need to get out more and spend time in the capital. Many high end, very visible cars and the owners never have an issue. Did you ever wonder why? When you know the answer to that, then you might have a better idea how things actually work here in the DR. Some of you need to get out of Sosua more often. jeje

As I said, I have a friend (expat) that rides around in a 458, 911 and in the not very distant future, a new Lambo.

I hate the capital and could "care less" about what other people drive. But you can stay there and tell us about it. jeje.

Rob Rob Rob!!!!

Do you know they type of cars I would have in my garage if I had a 3 car garage and the money.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT
A 2015 Chevy Camaro ZL1
A 1970 Plymouth Cuda Hemi

You know what I will do with a Tesla Model S??? Use it as a table, bench, and a place where my buddies can place their beer during a backyard Q.

You and I are two totally different men and I can tell this by the type of cars you like. I am not knocking your choice I just thik the Tesla Model S is a pointless car with a 100,000USD price tag.

BTW The BMW 5 series is a nice car, but make sure you YEILD to Dodge Challenger HELLCAT!!!

You drive a Beamer right??? Why do they pump engine nose through the speakers in the M5 the most brutal 5 series???

Rob to me a favor and go out and get yourself a Corvette Stingray and have some fun in life. a Tesla????? GEEEEZZZZZ!!!!

Used to street race two or three hundred years ago (or so it seems). Used a 1970 Skylark GS Stage II with completely reworked innards. It was fun, until people started getting seriously hurt, and the police started paying attention.

A "standard issue" Model S can get to 60mph off the line in 5.9 seconds. The performance version can do the same in 3.2, which is the same speed as a Z06 Corvette manual.

I have friends with the traditional European toys, and they all talk about Tesla. It hardly depreciates in value, has an unlimited miles warranty, can clock 120 without breaking a sweat and go up to 140, and Uncle Sam is more than happy to pick up $7,500 of the cost in tax credits.

And it costs about $1.50 to "refuel," lol.

Regarding your first sentence '...if you have to ask etc etc" I patently disagree. I am very comfortable financially ..i believe that i am wealthy. I have friends who are inordinately wealthy...with plenty of cash to spare. Every one of them and me included can tell you what every single thing they ever purchased cost them. We always ask ; HOW MUCH?" Not because we cant afford it, but because we are assessing the value of that item agains its actual cost. Its why they are rich...because they are watching their monayyyy!!!

Agree with this (sorry, off-topic re the thread, but not this post), reminds me of something my wife once said about our neighbors: Edenorte "sent" a voltage spike, which fried a few tv sets and fridges on our street, thankfully not ours, since everything was disconnected. A hard-working and honest neighbor of ours started planning on gathering a few people and going to the Edenorte office to complain, but another set of neighbors refused to participate, since they like to act wealthy, even though they are not... Their mentality being: As we are rich we just stay quiet and purchase everything new.

Everyone I know, who is even a bit wealthy, and has had to work for the money, behaves just like here, no penny is paid without a thought behind. Even outside of DR, I never like to have anything done without knowing beforehand how much is it going to cost.

I found that the Crevette Springway was one of the worst cars I had to drive. I delivered a 70's version from Germany to Ireland for a friend.
Looks the biz but what a piece of antiquated junk to drive.

Most Americans don't get what all the fuss is about with European cars :)
They are happy to stick with 1/4 mile numbers, V8's and drive cars that corner like arm chairs.

My 4 Cyl/1800cc will do 0-60mph in 4.2 secs and corners like it's on rails.
It's 6 yrs old and it's now appreciating in value, can't beat that :)

The early Tesla's used the same chassis, aluminium bonded, light and extremely strong.
If I lived in the USA and needed a car, Tesla would be way up their on my list.

true Robert, but the stigma is still there & unfortunately the company itself lurches from one financial crisis to another :(
