If at any time during the year you have more than $10,000 US in a foreign bank you have to disclose that on form FinCen 114

In addition, if you have home(s), land, rental income, vehicles plus all other 'assets' with a value of over $200,000 you must file Tax Form 8938

The rule of thumb is comply with #1.... but file 8938 at your own peril.

One famous idiot that did not file his foreign income from being a partner in Grupo Punta Cana or his Condo rental was Charlie Rangel - he paid a hefty fine. He made $350,000 profit when he sold and had an unclaimed rental income of over $1 million

But it took them 20 years to catch up to him. So if you have one foot in the grave maybe you "can take it with you"
lol, cool pic of the congressman Charlie Rangal

I´m not completely understanding this. I have never gotten this notification but then again I still have an American address and and American bank even though I live here full time.
You think you are dealing with Dick Tracy? This guy went and registered in some US plan to "Help" US citizens. So they got his Email and he gave an address here. They have NO Clue you live here and best to keep it that way...............

False. Not a scam. Read my posts. Go to the official U.S. Embassy website in Sto. Dom. and you will find exactly the same information that I found in my inbox. I wish it were a scam and that I could carry on with my day.
I would not fill out nothing....

Thousands of US citizens reside abroad and social security requires citizens living abroad to notify them of their current address. Your current address may not be the the same as the address currently listed with them as lots of retirees move around.

Failure to timely notify them could result in a suspension of benefits until compliance.

The main reason for stricter compliance abroad comes in the death reporting area. Currently, hospitals, funeral homes, nursing homes etc., in the US are required to notify social security of deaths at their facility. This allows social security to terminate those benefits shortly after notification. Such is not the case in many countries, and there are reported cases of people continuing to collect benefits years after the recipient has passed.

Note that another area of fraud involves legal permanent residents collecting ss benefits after returning to their home country. While legal permanent residents are entitled to collect ss benefits, they may not reside outside the US for a period longer than 6 moths or those benefits will be suspended.

Thus that is why there are the legal requirements to provide your current residence. Failure to do so could result in suspension or termination of those benefits

please that will never happen... that is not true you don't to have to reside in the usa or return home every 6 months ..to collect your SS checks ,,,, false once you earn you status of paying all those years of SS you can live on the moon.

Social Security sends recipients living abroad a questionnaire every one or two years (the frequency depends on age, country of residence and other factors) to confirm they remain eligible for benefits. Failing to return the questionnaire will halt your payments.

I agree with this mindset. However, if one is claiming the Foreign Earned Income Exemption, could the wires of the IRS and SSA ever cross?

Also, and FYI, use this SSA tool as a reference to see how the rules can apply to oneself. I played around with it and one way a beneficiary can lose payments after 6 months is if they are an alien survivor and never lived in the US for more than 5 years.

Best.

No I disagree once you start collecting you are governed by those rules....
You can disagree but he stepped into this by himself. It was not his fault he filled out that form here. Now his benefits will STOP unless he deals with this. That has ALWAYS been the rule. AND THAT IS A FACT.........

Further to the point about discontinuance of benefits: Last year I received a letter regarding my prescriptions program (part of the SS payments. They said reply to bla bla bla. I tossed it. A month later same thing. I tossed it a second time. The third time they put dates in the letter that my benefits would stop. I was in the DR and had another two weeks before my monthly trip to NY. When I got there I went to the NY pharmacy and inquired. They said you should call. I did. Long, long story short, I was buying in one state and registered in another state. That is buying "buying out of network". Not allowed. Not going into details as to why not but has to do with state funding to/by feds.
They reinstated my benefits for prescriptions after I spent about two hours on the phone with Mrs. DoeDoe. Manger of busting balls.

Please re-read my post again.

I said......"While legal permanent residents are entitled to collect ss benefits, they may not reside outside the US for a period longer than 6 moths or those benefits will be suspended"..........

Of course there are exceptions in extraordinary circumstances......hospitalization, illness and the like.

I remember when young Frank at Jose O'Shay's told me after his mother died in Ohio that they buried her in the back yard so they would continue to get the SS check. He was kidding but other people do this. I'm glad the US government is verifying the SS recipients are still alive and we are not sending checks out without verification.

When I read I omitted or failed to understand the part about "foreign address on record." Is that what you were referring to when you said I read it wrong?
Yes. Signing up for that STEP program is probably what did it(?). I renewed my passport here not too long ago but haven't personally received that email. It was forwarded to me just as "FYI" by a friend who had notified the Embassy that he was living here. It's not a scam. My S.S. is deposited into a US bank account. Been here 16 years and have never notified them.

Absolutely correct. You can actually get Direct Deposit into a US Dollar account here. But you MUST fill out that form they send every one or two years or they CANCEL your SS. And who wants to be dependent on a form being correctly received by SS. NOT RECOMMENDED...........

Thanks for this. I understand the multiple reasons why ssa.gov needs various corroborations. What got my goat was the hostile tone of the notice threatening suspension of benefits March 3 and implying that I was 2x delinquent for not responding to two notices with envelopes that were mailed to me in 2022. I have always carefully updated and maintained a reliable U.S. snail mail address for ssa.gov I never received these letters and was never informed of the requiremt. When I filled out SSA-7162, it had a remarks section. I noted that, for the record, I had never received these mailings.
