My take on things, which will draw the ire of some. Men and women will never be seen as equal until we as humanists start to turn away from The philosophy of theism (religion) because this is what perpetrates the myth of male superiority. Only an atheist in the true sense of the word can see man and women as equals.

Here it is......
Dictionary and Thesaurus - Merriam-Webster Online

The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary is based on the print version of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate? Dictionary, Eleventh Edition. The online dictionary includes the main A-Z listing of the Collegiate Dictionary, as well as the Abbreviations, Foreign Words and Phrases, Biographical Names, and Geographical Names sections of that book. It also includes 1,000 illustrations and 25 tables. Selected sections of the print Collegiate Dictionary, notably the Signs and Symbols section, are omitted from the online Collegiate Dictionary because they include special characters and symbols that cannot readily be reproduced in HTML.

Merriam-Webster Online [unquote]

I think that gives me everything BUT the gender of the authors . Do you know? If not, could you find out?

Well THAT's a relief to me Bob - I can keep my religious mentality!!!

There is absolutely NO WAY I could see myself equal to a woman, female of the species, supporter when I am wrong, lovely comforter when I am depressed ...............

The women in my family are all feminists, and have been so going back before Jane Fonda or Molly Yard wore a bra.

Many men are feminists, if they define it as proactively supporting the equality of women in every aspect of life women choose, and never intentionally degrading her with words or deeds; upholding them as peers in all respects. Having grown up in a feminist household, I have ALWAYS been greatly aware of how women have historically been treated. And I still find misogyny to be truly disgusting.

But to me, the real feminists aren't the radical burn-your-bra types, screeching anti-male victimhood at sit-ins (or pasring syllables in order to find something offensive). Nope. The real feminists were the ones that went out and competed with men in the world, combining their education, motivation, personality, dedication to a cause, and stood toe-to-toe with men. They didn't just use words proclaiming equality. They proved it.

Like Mom and Grandmom CB did. Successful in a "man's world" well before it was cool to do so.

It was they...and I can tell some women right here..that showed "men" the folly of their attitudes by actually exceeding the performance of their male counterparts in the real world. Not just with words. But with Actions and deeds.

They are the trailblazers, the icons, the revered, not the radical mouthpieces who never backed their words with their actions, and stand ready and locked and loaded to take offense at the drop of a hat.

Mom CB used to say her greatest weapon with men in the business world was letting men ~think~ they had some perceived upper hand...until she had their heart and balls on a platter...:cheeky:...virtual surgery with a smile.

When one demands respect with their words, they rarely get it. When one proves themself with actions, they earn lasting respect without having to ask for it.

Ginnie and MommaC, I like your style...

Abraham Lincoln:

Every man is said to have his peculiar ambition. Whether it be true or not, I can say for one that I have no other so great as that of being truly esteemed of my fellow men, by rendering myself worthy of their esteem. How far I shall succeed in gratifying this ambition, is yet to be developed.
--March 9, 1832

Of our political revolution of '76, we all are justly proud. It has given us a degree of political freedom, far exceeding that of any other nation of the earth. In it the world has found a solution of the long mooted problem, as to the capability of man to govern himself. In it was the germ which has vegetated, and still is to grow and expand into the universal liberty of mankind.--February 22, 1842

And, of course, this one:

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.--November 19, 1863

This thread reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Jerry goes up behind a guy and asks him where the Chinese restaurant is.
The guy turns around and flips out because he thinks Jerry is a racist because the guy is Oriental.
After that, Jerry must be extremely careful not to offend his Indian date with words like scalper.
In this analogy, Cobraboy would be Jerry and Chris would be the Chinese man.;)

cobraboy, after reading your post 147 I can understand why you took offence at being told your language was sexist as you clearly did not mean it that way.

But I still don't understand why people still get up in arms about someone saying that "man" to mean the species as a whole is not the best way of expressing things. It is no longer in common usage - the dates on the quotes in post 148, which date back to the time when women were well and truly in the kitchen illustrate this - and nowadays, "people"/"humans"/"humanity" are perfectly acceptable alternatives that are clearer about encompassing both genders. Language is constantly evolving. Words are replaced by others for all sorts of reasons.

I never burned my bra (a myth frequently used to belittle those 1960s feminists who may not have got it all right but today's women owe a lot to them as well as to the suffragists and many others) but have to admit that I have taken part in protests as well as many the things you so eloquently state your admiration for. And, like Chris, I never lost my sense of humour - I even went to Personchester once... :) [sorry, no groaning smiley]

I am also confused about that. The suffrage movement happened in many countries simultaneously (give or take some years) but in the US women only were allowed to vote (universal suffrage) early in the 1900's if my memory is correct. So, whereas even I know that Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, I fail to see what the quotes with 'men' in bold, have to do with the previous post .. that women in cb's family were liberated?

Can someone enlighten me?

You said it Rocky! At least I've at last started to enjoy myself. Never could have 'dreamed' up that MommC is so passionate about being a man! And that she called me a bitch and I did not even react. (I wonder why?) And that Chiri never burnt a bra .. (I did not either, tis more comfortable with one!) and that "Only an atheist in the true sense of the word can see man and women as equals", and that I did not react to that but that BushBaby loved the thought! LOL!

To tell the truth here is why I've gotten completely 'in tune' with the word bitch over the past few days. All the women are now 'embracing their inner bitches'. It is all the rage and quite fashionable and I'm not even voting for any of these.

It's just too bad that you aren't WOman enough to admit that you made a tempest out of a teapot. I prefer to see myself as a rationalist atheist And Chris name a major religion that doesn't hold men above women, but then again they say behind every successful man stands a bitch but every successful woman makes it on her own.

I've had fun playing Devil's advocate........

best laugh all week......and I'm glad someone (Chris maybe??!!) saw the true significance of my calling her a b*tch ! (I did say publicly I'm one also and was the pot calling the kettle black).

Now Lambada if you click the bottom link on my dictionary post it tells you how the definitions are derived....the etymology that is used in the dictionary.
I doubt if you'll ever find out exactly who compiles it as it is a joint endeavour of the staff (which includes both males and females).

As for the '60's bra burning episodes - to me that was a childish exibition that really served no purpose other than destroy some perfectly good wearing apparel (I used to love to go braless until they got too big and started to sag;):)) that my 'liberated' mother, who grew up during the great depression would have had a fit at the waste!

I'm proud to be a 'man' , as opposed to being a chicken/horse/cow/duck etc. however, I'm even prouder to be the feminine gender having overcome many more obstacle that the masculine gender will ever face.

And I've tried at the end of most of my posts to relate this discussion back to the rule of law/rule of person Original Post........

I'm left wondering why no-one picked up on my reference to the 'Christmas' saga that is being played out in "politically correct" North America:bunny::ermm:
