It would have been nice if the 'travellers' were discouraged without having to destroy the beach business and the charm but I suppose that did not work out.

I have not been to many parts of the DR. Are there any similar beaches to Sosua (shade/trees close to the water, shacks selling food/beer, easily accessible from the village/town) by foot ?

I liked Playa Magante but it requires a car and is a bit of drive.

I have been to many beaches from Monte Cristi to Samaná and there is nothing like Sosúa beach, it is (was) very long with many bars/restaurants options along the water to sit and enjoy, not having to put up with others if wanted quiet and peace, water very calm and no current, safe for swim, kids etc. , unlike other places..., it will not be the same... , and I bet everything you like no cruise ship passengers ever makes it there, not in 20 years - too far for a few hours trip..., it was always an excuse to get rid of status quo because of some people's desire to make it a luxury spot, like there aren't enough of those around...!? Money talks..., rest walk...

La Costera was also our regular eatery years ago, used to go many times a week, even breakfast was good, very small place but sometimes he made food that was in a different class, you could easily tell the work and talent gone into it..., owner and wife were good friends..., sadly missed nowadays...

I agree, there is nowhere like Sosua beach. That's what I used to like about the North Coast - every beach was a bit different - Sosua, Cabarete, Playa Grande, Playa Caleton, just to name a few. All different and all had their own appeal. Now they are trying to make Sosua beach line the modern Playa Grande, which I don't like much. I think the nearest in appeal to Sosua beach is Playa Ensenada, near Punta Rusia, but again, you need transport to get there.

I have also been to more than a 15 beaches from Monte Christi through Samana. All rather different.

Sosua beach will still be very long. It just won't have the squalid shacks which were one reason I lived in Cabarete and only visited Sosua beach less than once a year. I have no idea if in what seems like it will be years down the road now, if I will go a visit Sosua beach after the plazas are done and all the schacks are gone.
Time will tell.

It will be great to sit at the end of the beach in a concrete plaza 200 meters from the sand. I'm sure the food and drinks will be priced competitively.

Time will tell. I personally don't miss anything one way or another. Nor will the busloads of Dominincans who bring their own coolers to Sosua beach on weekends, which are more relevent to future discussions.

Do you really think that will be allowed once the condos go up? Those are my favorite days on the beach. That would be great.

As long as they can rent chaise lounges and umbrellas on the beach, I don't see why not(?).
I hope you are right. The rentals will be run by the plazas? Maybe service to the chairs they rent? Near the middle which is the best part of the beach.

Maybe the prices will be reasonable.

The middle of the beach is a long way from either plaza to be lugging chaise lounges and umbrella back and forth every day(?). I think food and drink service would be very slow. It was generally too slow when your table was right in front of the place.

Playa Teco in Maimón has a lot of the authentic vibe that Sosúa had, although it's lacking the so-called shacks. I fear that Sosúa was one of a kind.

Dominicans will always have access to Sosua beach. That I am 100% certain of.

The condos will not stop busloads of Dominicans from going to Sosua beach.
It remains to be seen how service is provided in the way of chairs, umbrellas, food and drink. Someone will work that out.

I had heard they were going to deny access to Dominicans crossing from Charamicos to Sosua and back for work. They want them to walk the highway. Who knows, so many rumors.

I get the feeling, Sosua beach will not be a beach that most want to go to anymore. Does not sound inviting.

You'll still have the same nice beach, the same nice view, and the same nice, calm, clear water. Other than Cabarete, there still aren't any beaches nearby that are anywhere near as nice.

By the time they find out the plaza’s are too far from the beach they will put up service shack's on the beach for their drinks and umbrellas and the whole thing starts all over again.

The government was gifted the land on either end of the beach (where the plazas are and going into the 60 meter public property zone).

Anyone should have public access from he east or west ends of the beach. The middle access will be closed as I understand it.
Otherwise I cannot see any issues with public access.

Some of those shacks are on the 60 meter setback. I doubt the government will allow it. Others were on private property. The owner definitely won't allow that.

Correct. Just without the squalid shacks.

All the shacks were illegal , either on private land or within the 60 meter setback. That is why all will be removed over time. There is n way it will even remotely resemble what it is now with respect to the vendor shacks.

If the government deems it necessary to have a couple chair/umbrella renters at various locations for convenience, that might happen, but it probably will not.
No idea what will eventually happen on that. Wait and see.

As for condos, the land owners can do whatever they like with the area behind the 60 meter setback with government medio ambiente approval of course.

Cerise the Breaking reporter did state exactly that .. I think she even said they will be 3 towers , 6 Stories High ( just going from memor I forget the details), but yeagh, she claims there are Condos going up but that the 60 Mete Rule from the water line would apply .. bla bla .
Nor sure where she gets her info from ..
