It would have been nice if the 'travellers' were discouraged without having to destroy the beach business and the charm but I suppose that did not work out.
I have not been to many parts of the DR. Are there any similar beaches to Sosua (shade/trees close to the water, shacks selling food/beer, easily accessible from the village/town) by foot ?
I liked Playa Magante but it requires a car and is a bit of drive.
I have been to many beaches from Monte Cristi to Samaná and there is nothing like Sosúa beach, it is (was) very long with many bars/restaurants options along the water to sit and enjoy, not having to put up with others if wanted quiet and peace, water very calm and no current, safe for swim, kids etc. , unlike other places..., it will not be the same... , and I bet everything you like no cruise ship passengers ever makes it there, not in 20 years - too far for a few hours trip..., it was always an excuse to get rid of status quo because of some people's desire to make it a luxury spot, like there aren't enough of those around...!? Money talks..., rest walk...
La Costera was also our regular eatery years ago, used to go many times a week, even breakfast was good, very small place but sometimes he made food that was in a different class, you could easily tell the work and talent gone into it..., owner and wife were good friends..., sadly missed nowadays...
