About the water...I swam everyday, for 6 weeks, while in Sosua the past summer. I started at Sosua by the Sea and swam to Playa Sosua and across the bay. I am prone to sinus infections and ear infections. I never got sick from swimming in the waters of Sosua. The water is beautiful and my only complaint was seeing trash on the ocean floor, from time to time.

About the potential of tourism in Sosua an neighboring areas.... there is a lot! Zip lines, hiking, biking, waterfall tours, surfing, kite-surfing, kiteboarding, the Extreme Sports Hotel, excellent food, friendly people and whatever else can be dreamed up. Sports tourism is an untapped and potentially huge market. The area would be perfect for mountain bike races and triathlons (a sport that draws thousands of competitors who will pay big $$$ entry fees and have no problem traveling for well run races in exotic locations).

The area could also be easily be transformed into the Ibiza of the Caribbean, with a REAL nightlife and international clientele.

My understanding is that the Russians are orchestrating many of the things going on. They have the money, the vision, and the fortitude to move in and take over. Old Sosua, as some refer to it, will get a make-over and marked up as the Russians start calling shots and setting prices. This could just be "rumors" or it could be something else. We shall see.

There's more sex in Ibiza than Sosua ever had, of any kind.
Under the new model it could be like Ibiza without sex but under Russian management and with windows:cool:.
A novel idea.

As for the Russians: Finland has a long history with the russians. A former primeminister once said: "Finland is a small country and we must be careful that we won't become even smaller".

I used to think Sosua was doing fine being a bit seedy and relatively free from corporate tourism, but more and more, I'm getting less optimistic about its future from reading about it here.

Busy body mayors and other people are meddling with the town businesses because they want it to be something it simply isn't and never will be. This isn't only bad for existing businesses. It will severely impact the desire for anyone with deep pockets to invest in new businesses and the town will wither away. The handful of bars that were in business 10 years ago will likely be around in another 10 years, but there will be far more empty store fronts that will remain closed for the whole year. It will be like July in January, and in July, you may even see some of the core businesses go on vacation. They'll finally tear down the beach casitas and replace them with dark, non-functional cinder block shops that won't have enough revenue to pay for AC or lights.

La Florida

Sorry, "only" 50? to get in most clubs. Drinks on the other hand:
A Vodka Lemon will cost you up to 15 ? in a club, or 10 ? in Ibiza Town or one of the pre-club bars.
A beer (or water) will cost you up to 12 ? in a club and 6-8 ? elsewhere.

Tips and tricks on how to survive an Ibiza clubbing holiday!

Great ideas so far.
Close the public beach charge to use it, and i guess change the law in regard to beach access.
Parking lots, shopping plazas, cut the trees, bussed in cruise passengers, mass tourism, families with kids, condos, hotel, closed in bars in the tropics, A/C Cold beer, sweaters, no girls. All the makings of a romantic vacation away from the hustle and stress of everyday life.
Beginning to sound a bit like Florida.:nervous:

Going to get to a point one day where a most Dominicans will not know they are on an island as they won't be allowed on the shore line...all owned by foreigners.

This may be one of the times when this quote applies,

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results".

Closing the fronts of bars and going after Johns and Hookers is hardly the same as closing beach front access to Sosua Beach.

I have seen not one word about closing the beach front access or restricting access to Sosua beach.

Back to the hooker discussion...

And what exactly would those tourists from cruise ships do in Sosua?
Sosua beaches are among the worst I have seen in the country. Town itself is very unremarkable. No cultural backdrop to talk about. Why would any of those tourists, " viewed as having real money" wanto to go to Sosua?

Wow......
No cultural background to talk about????
That's a little harsh and I'd bet there are a whole lot of people who would beg to differ with that statement.
Statements like that could be used as proof that some really serious clean-up is required in Sosua, if that is the sum total of what people perceive about the place.
Geeesh. :disappoin

@Seamonkey - Imagine the potential this place would have if they transitioned Las Canas into a Mega Blackbeards?

Exactly. I always said the same about Casa Marina. Here's a all-inclusive that is struggling and at best 1/2 full. Make 1/2 of it chica friendly and divide that 1/2 from the family side....problem solved. $$$$$

Is the govt going to pay to air condition these establishments? If they have nude dancing or similar OK make them shutter the place so no one can see what is going on inside.
Der Fish

That's right. Passions had pole dancing etc and was all behind closed doors, but they closed it. In the other bars on Pedro Clisante what is there that is so shocking to passers by? Just a bunch of guys and girls sitting at bars and tables, with some of the girls dancing a bit sometimes.

what is shocking? the fact that they might be discussing the possibility of having sex. that is something that would horrify families, which are all made up of adopted children.

Closing-in bars will do little since people still walk around the streets. If the local officials wanted to deal with a more pressing issue, they should do something about the wreckless criminals that pass themselves off as motoconcho drivers. I found the motoconcho drivers to be more problematic and bothersome then any other group in Sosua. The older ones were usually fine and I explained to them that I "like to walk" but when I "needed them", I'd be sure to seek out their services and pay them well. Those guys would typically stop bothering me and would just greet me when I walked by. The younger ones, on the other hand were very aggressive and offered me drugs and girls on a regular basis, even though I made it clear that I neither wanted or needed either. I got tired of them swarming in on me as I walked around. To me, those guys should be a bigger concern for local officials.
