POP has a very good stretch of beach from outside of the Lomar Hotel to the end of the Malecon traveling east. All it needs is for a tractor to rake it every morning and afternoon. The beach is filthy because it is neglected. If that stretch of beach is given some tlc, Sosua's beach would not have a chance. Additionally, the beach at the end of the Malecon is quite long and beautiful. Puerto Plata's beach(es) could rival any beach in DR if it was only given some care and attention.

And the water quality there?

Anyone that thinks a single cruise ship passenger is traveling from Maimon to Sosua for anything is unbalanced. They rarely venture more than a mile from ship regardless of what country they dock in. They walk off the ship, get fleeced by the venders for a couple of hours and then return to the ship. Why would they take a $90, over one hour round trip cab ride to Sosua?

Now I'm utterly bored with this pontification.
We are talking about putting windows or facades on innocuous bars, not changing the flippin' whole concept...

Welcome to the Taliban state of Sosua.

And the water quality there?

From recent posts it does not seem as if Sosua is much better. The was a raging argument about the reef being dead and how sewerage washes into the water at Sosua after a rain and the smell that is generated. I am no hydro-geologist, hydrologist or aqua-mologist or whatever the correct title of a person who is an expert at water conditions and testing. Are you an expert and can you give some references where it states that the water quality of all or most of the beach locations in DR.

With the water treatment plants outlet not far away....... not the best.

I did not know about the water treatment plant. I had suspected that the Rio San Marcos river outlet into the adjacent bay was not very good either for the ocean water purity in that area of Puerto Plata.

Beach, reef and river quality POP/Sosua

Sos?a-News

Ecological organization SOMONCA sounds alarm bell

The ecological organization of Sos?a, Cabarete and Montellano (SOMONCA), led by, among others, Milo Mart?nez and Garry Kooy, is sounding the alarm bell! They demand more attention for the increasing pollution of the two rivers Sos?a and Yasica. Both rivers are still used as an open sewer. But also the sewage discharge from the neighborhoods La Uni?n and Villa Liberaci?n straight into the ocean near the Gregorio Luper?n airport causes major problems.

Through this discharge of wastewater (called black water here) the fish population is reduced to almost zero and the coral reef near the airport and the two rivers is completely gone. During a visit by the President to Cabarete, Danilo Medina said that he is also concerned about the destruction of the environment. He has set up a committee, headed by Lic. Francisco Matos Mancebo (congressman) to make an inventory of the problems and to come up with solutions. It is thought to be a program of reforestation and installing water purification plants.
The owners of the diving schools in Sos?a and Cabarete also complain about the demise of coral reefs. Fortunately, there are still several places in between Sos?a and Cabarete with coral reefs that make a dive worth it. Especially the coral growth and tropical fish near the sunk ship at the bend at Playa Chiquita is a popular location for divers.

I think a bit of perspective might be helpful here.

........

A few years ago, it was decided to start berthing cruise ships (the ones with 3-5,000 tourists each) just outside of POP. Unlike the rap star wannabes, these folks are viewed as having real money, and the idea of several ships visiting every week was, I'm sure, quite tantalizing.

POP has no practical beach. Cabarete and beyond are very nice, but a bit far for a tourist who only has a few hours ashore. Which of course leaves Sosua.

........

So let me get this right, the cruise ship folks who have all inclusive deals for food and drinks, and just about everything else you can imagine, and normally spend a couple of hours on shore will get shipped all the way to Sosua (1hr+ return) to shop at the fantastic souvenir shops and malls, visit the great churches, cathedrals and museums in town, pop on to various art galleries and see beautiful buildings and monuments of historic architectural value, then wine and dine at the exquisite bars and restaurant here in Sosua. Then for good measure spend a few hours on the world-class rated beach before going back to the ship, all in their limited time table.

This way they will splash a huge amount of surplus cash they have (remember they go on cheap all inclusive cruise ships in the first place to save money!?) and this way raise the local economy to no end !?

And wait, they later go back and tell their friends and family all of the great things they did in Sosua and next year they all come to stay in the wonderful 4 and 5 star hotels and resorts in and around this paradise.

Do you just see all that (or can you imagine the bits that are missing!?), wait a minute, I think I have the script for a great Hollywood movie, "Sosua resurrected", throw in a few characters and romance from around town (I and W could hit it off.... !? LOL) and we are on our way to the Oscars !? LOL

But seriously, if they want to do something more practical why don't they invite a few tourism expert from places who have already done this sort of thing and listen to their advice, if you want to redo your house do you just pick up the pen and paper and go around start sketching or call an expert.

Here is my advice about the beach, get rid of the unsightly shacks and build nice clean proper shops of the same size with all the needed amenities and facilities that look colourful and beautiful, give them to the current owners free of charge in exchange for a high standard of service and hygiene and code of conduct, with prices all clearly displayed for everything (no rip offs). Put proper security guard and police to ensure security and no hassle for visitors. Keep the place clean and orderly, with proper lights at night, parking etc. Then watch the place flourish and be packed every day and night of the week - I know, I know that is real rocket science.....

(Sorry I think this thread was about bars but got mixed up with the beach too !?)

One of the best posts I've seen yet on dr1. Completely agree with your recommendations.

I agree with others who said the enforcing the enclosure of the bars is unlikely to last long or have much impact.

And as much as some don't like the reputation and scene on Pedro Clisante, the actual visuals you take in while hanging out there are not that bad. I've seen much worse happen out in the open in various parts of the USA. What you see on PC at night is not much different at all then the party scene at night in South Beach.

It's just that the reputation the DR has for sex tourism makes the relatively mild outside scene less tolerable even though the vast majority of sex is behind closed doors. But b/c we know many of the people hanging out in the bars are there to meet someone for P4P sex some feel they have the right to interfere b/c they do not like what they are going to do at some later time behind closed doors with those they met at a bar while doing nothing wrong at the bar.

and that is why that place is empty and struggling.

When Judy was managing the place it had a good reputation. The restaurant, snack bar were good and rentals in demand. It was a very successful for families and retired couples and the place did well. Wife and I would have dinner 3 times a week and I'd stop for a quick breakfast 4 times a week. Always meeting up with Judy and other good people.

Change of ... ummm... some new people moved in and Judy left under some very stressful times. The place is dead the food lousy and most long time renters and owners have left. The couple that bought the restaurant while Judy was there, and own a unit, fled. I know of at least 8 that fled the place right after Judy left.

We did go up for a hair cut 4 months ago. Even THAT was bad. Looking around while waiting for 2 hours past my appointment........ empty and only saw 2 people that were in residence in the 2 hours.

We don't go there anymore. At all.

Good marketing......... come here and we have girls for you.

It's amazing how people can ruin a good going business. Just Amazing

Anyone been to Key West Florida when the cruise ships come in.........not a pretty scenario.....they will trample you to get to the drag shows in the early afternoon before they return to the ship for a romantic night tied up to the dock!!! really.....we need cruise ships like we need a hole in the head!......Key West did have one attraction that would be a nice draw to the beach at sunset, of course lights and security need to be present, they had an area to view the sunset, take photos etc while they had a mini street fair going on, popcorn carts, high wire walkers, musicians, magicians, henna tattoos, artist, dancing in the street......and after the sun set within an hour everyone was back at their hotels dropping off the "family" and heading off to the "other" end of town.....they make a lot of money and Sunset Park might be the only "family" thing to do other than the aquarium ....we have ocean world already
