Bravos fault no.. my fault for just going there, and of course the idiot that hit my car, he said it was my fault because he didn't have enough room soo he just ran into me.. perfect thing you know they have to blame somebody, never themselves..anyway just got back from Pricemart and I found the T.V. I needed 40 inch.. last one sale $ 9999 pesos..looks like I got a free tv and some money for that trouble..

Aren't you just a ray of sunshine. Where you you think is the best quality shopping in the DR?

Haha - just giving my opinion - The best Supermarkets to buy quality in my opinion in Santo Domingo is Supermercado Nacional in Arroyo Hondo. Another good one is Amigo Supermarket and maybe Fresh in Naco but Im not convinced with the second one as its over priced.

Supermarkets cater and adapt to their clientel demands. Bravo are the quintessential example of catering for the Dominican Middle Class. Their business model is similar to Zara Clothes store were they increase stock of what has sold well recently. Depending were they are located affects what is sold. The best quality Bravo is the one is Churchill but its also the most crowded.

You are lucky you did not get shot. I stopped having arguments in the street after someone pulled a gun a while ago.

I have to say I’ve never seen a person drinking a beer inside a supermarket. Anywhere. Am I not paying attention? Is this common?

Drinking beer in public is permissible almost everywhere in the DR besides Bravo. Most supermarkets the packers will go out of their way to open the bottles you have just bought.

Correct. A few weeks ago, I drank about 4 beers with one of my business partners there while we were in Unidos. He drank about 6. We just kept the empty cans in our shopping carts and paid for the beers we drank as we left. No problems at all.

The Arroyo Hondo store was my go-to for a few years. It was the only place you could find deli products like roast beef,, pastrami, corned beef, and quite a few other products like cottage cheese and other things I don't remember at the moment.

I quit going due to the prices and the parking/traffic situation.

I'm with AE -
11 yrs here and I do not recall seeing a drinking grocery shopper.....

I have seen the occasional person drinking beer in the eating area of the food court at Jumbo (At 8 in the morning no less). More than likely waiting for someone shopping.

It's amazing how many of the natives here drink beer instead of water.

Beer is safer than water, cheers !!!

Maybe that's a statement on the quality of the beer?

Even if it does go bad, though, there are no life-threatening bacteria bacteria (pathogens) that can live in beer. So drink up – even bad beer is safer than water.

Bravo has slowly been taking a larger market over the last few years. Their religious beliefs probably set them back more than anything. Besides the Sunday closing they loose out greatly with the boose ban. When their warehouse burnt down they had no insurance becuase they dont believe in insurance only the will of god. Their wine is mediocre at best with barely palatable brands that are mostly unknown. Some of the brands are packaged for the DR middle class. I would prefer one good bottles than 3 bad ones for the price of 2. A friend of mine was frogmarched out of Bravo by security once for having a beer in her hand during Christmas. The meat is hit and miss. Sometimes you can get great steaks if you are lucky. Bread which is generally good can also pull its surprises. Some of the fresh fruit and vedge is export reject. Not that it makes a big difference on the flavor but if you look closely you will see some defect or odd shape. On the whole they do sell most main household consumption items at a reasonable price but if you are looking for qualty look elsewhere.

I have been trying to put my finger on what I have found too much of the time in mercados here. Drake you found exactly what it is...including but not limited to Nacional “fresh fruit and vegetables export reject”. We the consumers here get the reject. It is so evident to me now as I would just think we did not pick right. Just another example of so much that is not right here. Inferior choices abound. And those that will come out of the woodwork in regards to this statement, and defend defend defend the markets selling rejected bottom of the barrel product, I can again think too bad for you in your acceptance of whatever is handed out. We are forced to accept the bad leftovers that would never be exported to othercountries.

Maybe, but beer goggles may lead to some pathogens... ;)

The owners are a turbo evangelical Christian family, and ar promoters of Christian films, concerts and lecture series.

One departure from competitors is that they pay cash upfront for their produce, unlike other chains, and thus get the pick of the best.

..They also own at least 2 gyms..the Bravo in Santiago opened a Smart Fit gym across the street in a building they probably owned..and they have at least 1 more in Santo Domingo..

They have a contract with Smart Fit, which is an international brand, for the DR market. Right now they have more than 2 gyms in the DR (1 in Santiago, 1 in Higüey, 1 in Baní, 1 in La Romana, and 11 in the Santo Domingo area).

The fresh fruit/veggie trucks on the street are the best choice oftentimes -- I find

I have always felt the bananas come from one particular source. I am a voracious banana consumer and buy a lot of them every week.

When one place has small crappy ones, so does the other chains and the street vendors.

When you find really nice ones, everyone has nices ones.

It happens too often to be a coincidence.
