1. Never pay for anything upfront in this country.
2. Never lend money to anyone unless you are holding collateral of equal or greater value.

My neighbor Pablo down stairs is an honest taxi driver. Feel free to PM me for his contact details if you ever need a drver here in Santiago.

People of little faith ! I never refuse to give out a loan.

Though I do charge 10% monthly interest and take a bike/car/land/house title as collateral.....😆😆
Even been to a compra-venta?

The main advantage of lending people a little money is that you can easily say "No" next time!
I do the same. Small amounts and only certain people. They know better to ask for more when they still haven't paid back what they owe you.

It never ceases to amaze me how many threads get opened looking for advice for the most basic fundamental things in life. What's the best way to send money? How to use and ATM, paying low wage laborers, who to tip? lending money? These are not indigenous to the D of R folks. These are fundamental life concepts.
I agree, I enjoy the complex and informative threads. Like the Popeyes fried chicken grand opening thread.

For anyone needing a reliable taxi driver in NC, I can also provide more info via PM. We've used the same driver exclusively (or he has sent someone of trust in the case he was busy) for the past close to 10 years... Aside from me and my wife, he has also been the only person who has driven us around in our own vehicle (we needed to go to PUJ airport and back from POP)... He has even picked up our kids from school etc. All this, 100 % reliability...

He can also drive a truck and can do moving (has done one for us many years ago)...

We once did in fact pay for services in advance, and it did in fact go well aside from the fact that he was once busy when we needed him and we had to call someone else. Since then, things have been just fine though... We were first mad at him but then sorted it out... It wasn't thousands of pesos though, just a few hundreds...

I found it ballsy.

I usually have the same taxi driver to run around for errands. On occasions, I use another driver if my guy is not available.

I use my back up driver maybe once every 2 weeks and he seemed trustworthy. I don't talk about anything personal, just where I am going and small talk. But I guess he was watching my errands and seeing what I purchased. He was basically counting my money. The guy doesn't even know my name.
So the other day, he sends a voice message to my wife almost crying. That he needed 4000 pesos cash advance for a car battery he needed and he would pay me back with taxi service. Meanwhile, the day before his car was starting up fine and he made close to 3000 pesos with me(I run a bunch of errands at the same time).😒

I guess the holidays are coming and the sad stories of how one needs money. Now this taxi driver lost a client, thinking I was going to sympathize with him.

Be wary, people are paying attention to your moves and counting your money.

Learn to say no and when to cut people off.

We never responded to his voice mail.

Good for you cut that scammer loose.... I have zero tolerance for Dirt bags running a scam .. than they wonder why people talk about them. I'm telling you low key is the way you have to live here .. when they start with that sob story b******* never do business with them again period I had a very good painter paint my whole place after he finished painting my place a week later he asked me to lend him $20,000 to buy a car I told him pound salt.

get a new driver! I have had the exact same situation happen to me. He is not your friend. Never get too chummy with the help.
I hate to say it but keep your distance with help ... well off Dominicans taught me that .

Claro. Business is business. I pay for service and tip for good service. However, everyone here has a story about a service worker trying to shake them down. Service workers are just that. While I treat them all with dignity and respect, they are not my friends. I think one of the reasons cabanas are so popular here is most men do not want to get too friendly with a "service worker".

Be friendly, but never make friends with a Dominican who has less money than you. They will only end up being friends with your money.
