Been in every casino in Santo Domingo in flipflops and shorts, never had an issue as long as I'm playing. Not because I@ disrespectful but because I can. Simple as that.

maybe rules have changed. i said the early 90s.

how is it different for someone who has no job and at most goes to the supermarket and a local bar? it ain't.
DV8 snap out of it. You are talking Puerto Plata and I am talking la capital Santo Domingo. Peeps go to the supermarket in la capital smelling and looking good, just the way of life here in Santo Domingo. Ride the Metro, go to the mall and you won't see a single person not "dressed up". It is what it is.

I adapted and actually feel good with long sleeve shirt, cotton undershirt, creased pants. I get in the carro publico and this fine looking caramel babe does a double whiff, whiff, looks at me and smiles as if to say I smell good. DV8, it's a good feeling.

Now if I go to the north coast anything in clothing goes............. just the way it is

There are still places with dress codes. We stopped at Tipico Bonao on our way back from POP, and Mr. AE was wearing a sleeveless t-shirt and jeans. They refused our entry because of bare arms - and it wasn't a tank top. We had suitcase in the car so he went out to the parking lot and put a long sleeved shirt on over the t-shirt.

Someone who understands. I remember the day I met you and you was looking like a million and a half bucks and it was only early afternoon.

yeah right, see how long you could live in SD and NOT feel out of place. so dv8 snap into it and accept there is a dress code in la capital with 24/7 electricity, running hot water, places to go and things to do other than searching the internet for horrid news stories.............

get a life

Long pant is just the way a proper man should dress, and with a shirt with buttons. This dress code is of manners. Kids wear shorts, but not to go out,. No we dont want to see no hairy man legs, or black socks with dreas shoes . The reformed dominicano will wear jeans for everyday, but still wear a polo shirt, and the baseball cap.

I dont see anything wrong with it, its the same still in the u.s. some men still insist in slacks . Then there are the soon to be viejitos that keep that youthful feel in their dress.

Then theres that dumb rule in some night clubs where no jean are permitted, must wear slacks or khakis. Jeans are considered work clothes, and shorts are for athletics and children. A shirt with no buttons , in an undershirt. Slippers are worn on the beach or in the house only. Good fitting dress shorts, with a good fitting short sleeved dress shirt, tucked in, with a matching belt and leather boat shoes are for boating, or for thoae with a sweet sense of fashion! Not your dominican man.

One last question, does it not make you feel good to put on a little makeup, some nice clothes, nails all polished up and just step out for the day? And well the end of the day got a nice looking smelling clean dude laid up in the bed with you?

But to each his own, you want to look like a rag muffin OK with me. I lean towards the caramel looking good ladies.

I was speaking to some Colombian folks last week and they had mentioned that in the old days sneakers were frowned upon except for sports.

May be they don't want to be the center of attention because of a fashion faux-pas :)

Exactly.. I got to the Movies at the Mall in Santiago, and Im already the ONLY Gringo there, and speak very little spanish..
So now im gonna attact even MORE Attention to myself, by wearing SHorts ? why dont i just add a Flower Shirt and got "full Retard" while I am at it... just saying..

What one wears is up to them except when they need to or want to go to a place that requires a certain dress code, like government offices. I remember when I got my new cedula. There were some tourist types that were dressed in tank top unshaven shorts...etc. I didnt say anything but my first thought was " how disrepectful"

We all know that dv8 is a rebel, she'll do whatever pleases her and the hell with everyone else. Love her or leave her. :)

Besides dv8, HUG and Harley, you might see Mr. AE grunging around too, living in a beach town in both countries he's become accustomed to shorts and sand in his shoes. Working for decades in tuxes and starched shirts & suits, when he's on his own time he's rather like dv8. He's horrified his rather genteel brothers more than once, lol. To them 'dressing down' is jeans and a Ralph Lauren Polo shirt. One of them drags him to the barber.

Like Mr. dv8, I try to 'guide' him sometimes, and if he doesn't take the hint I've been known to get a little blunt. I've heard more "You think I care what they think?" than I'd care to admit. I've learned to pick my fights, and thankfully he does look good in shorts :)
