The Dominican long pants cultue.

In many hot countries, you will find that the majority of men wear long pants (DR, Africa, Middle East, you name it). The fact that you are more comfortable in short and less hot doesn't mean that others are. Personally, I don't see the difference, I wear jeans when it is hot, again I don't have sweaty balls
It s like many hot countries drink hot tea, although it is counter-intuitive.
Okay, I think I'm done for today...
the basic problem i have with it is that people would not do it in their countries, but they want to come to the caribbean and do it. it has nothing to do with climate, but just blatant disregard and disrespect for other people. i have an acquaintance from New York who wanted to go into the casino at the Jaragua in a tank top and shorts. those were the days when the Jaragua was probably the biggest hotel in LatAm, the early 90s. they told him it was against dress code, and he reminded the security at the door that he was an American. he should not have to fret about simple issues like the dress code of a third world country. well, i am sure you can guess who lost that argument. he sure as heck knew that he could not even dream about going into the Taj Mahal dressed like that.
I find bras much more uncomfortable than pants when it s hot
That is going to be a problem then....I am getting darn close to needing a bra.
All due respect to you Harleysrock cause I really dig you but it is just the way it is in la capital. I adapted to long pants, long sleeve shirt and even a cotton undershirt and I am no hotter or cooler than if wearing flip flops and shorts. The north coast is so, so different than Santo Domingo. The old saying is when in Rome do as the Romans.
I can go a full week and NOT see a Dominican in Santo Domingo wearing shorts, with the exception of the joggers on el malecon. Ladies long pants, always tight as can be. Men in the mid-day wearing suit and tie. Just the way it be in la capital.
Now if I day trip it to Boca Chica it is an entire different story.

No problem, like I said it is just the way it is in la capital. When back home in New Jersey I go unshaven, raggedy clothes, hair uncombed the whole nine yards. But when I am living in Santo Domingo I respect the culture and try to dress accordingly. After awhile it starts to feel good to check your belt, pants pulled up right, shirt has fresh starched collar, a dab of cologne........and well the end result is I usually end up having a good, really good night. LOL, but true
I wake up many mornings and at the crack of dawn see women and men dressed up ready to start their day so I say well at least I can step out today and not look like a bum.
Not really being told what you should wear but more like doing the respect the culture thing. As I say many times north coast and la capital are like two different countries.
You nailed it WW, sometimes I be like damn why I got to shave today, put on a clean shirt and ironed pants but that is life in the city.
i don't understand why people are so hell bent over this long pants business. i don't work and on daily basis i don't have to live by some imaginary dress code. it's shorts and chancle all the way. whenever i am forced to participate in boring social occasions i wear a dress. no problemo. when i visited palacio nacional i wore a suit, also no problemo. but on normal days i want to be comfy.
how is it different for someone who has no job and at most goes to the supermarket and a local bar? it ain't.
Again, different areas have different issues. Gringoland on the NC, everyone and his dog is tattooed. It's an attention grabber in the Capital, although growing fast, the full sleeves, necks and body are still not often seen on Dominicans.
