Moral outrage may be present, but embarrassment certainly is.

I think the main problem is they have no legal grounds, and they know it, so they try every which way.... !

If this was orchestrated from the central government I would have thought we would see a lot more changes a lot quicker. It's just some local goody-do-gooders trying to destroy some other people's livelihood for variety of reasons, just because they don't like it. And yes, moving establishments to a no man's land without legal grounds or proper help and grants will destroy their business and all their employees and dependents - and call that morality....

And then what, all the same cramped into the so called restaurants, what difference would this move make... !?

I'm no expert by any means, but I've lived here since the 70's and I have always lived among middle and upper middle class Dominican families in many parts of the country.

I have had conversations about Sosua many times with neighbors I consider friends and I can tell you I have never met one who thought Sosua was a nice beach town or would go ever go there, let alone take their family.

The only notable exception is when poorer folks are bussed in during Semana Santa for the day and go back home before dark.

Embarrasment is not the word I would use to describe how they feel. Disgust comes to mind more often than not.

In almost every conversation I've had, they have said it's the town where gringos go to have sex with prostitutes.

JD do you talk about anything else with your friends that they maybe disgusted about, let me think, how about all the rubbish and plastic bottles and what not they throw out of their cars, or all the pollutant they release in their rivers that end up on their beaches (have you been to Confresi beach lately !)...

Or all the 12 and 13 year olds who get pregnant, mainly by their good old "tios" (uncles). Or all the infidelity when they take their multiple mistresses to so many cabanas around the country - this subject of cabanas have come up with my friends back home, and they all shocked by such organized/obvious unfaithfulness tools at their disposal so common here....

Or the level of education standard of their kids, just last week I was asking how much this kid who goes to grade 4 at school will have if I gave him 500 pesos and then another 1000 pesos - he was totally gobsmacked (too much money maybe ! lol), his father was there and he eventually figure it out himself (lol), but the kid could not add it together to save his life... !? And I was told he is a very good student at school.... !

Let alone all the corruption that goes on here, many of people I know do not like and avoid calling the police to resolve issues, because they don't like them and afraid of them, and think getting them involved cause more hassle than not...!

So you see, there are a lot of things they could be disgusted about, and there are some laws against some of those, but we seem to find Sosua to be their main concern, where mainly no laws are being broken, and not a lot of trouble caused, even some money being made..., a bit funny really.... lol

IMO, Sosua is not their main concern.

But when the conversation comes up, they express what JD experienced.

In my paradise I have 24/7 electricity, water and internet.

You are an educated person yet you do not recognize the logical fallacy in the "many people" argument?

I do and own property.
I am not outraged or embarrassed by what is the law in the DR.
It is simply a different moral value.

When Christian evangelist types flock here to visit me I do not bring them down to PC on a Friday night unless they request a visit to the freak show.

Who are the victims?
If the politicians were honest I would have more respect but to hide behind the nonsense argument that flocks of families are waiting for the town to move the girls before they rush in is ridiculous.

The idea of forcing the bar business's to move because Illiana and her supporters are morally outraged is a bridge too far for me.

If you honestly want to help the town then go clean up the beach, cover the rocks so visitors are not injured trying to go for a swim.
The beach is the best of Sosua and one of the towns principal attractions, the girls are probably second.

Why has the city ignored the beach then got involved in this crazy save our paradise campaign?
I do not think the paradise needs saving from the embarrassed politicos and their supporters.
Plus I doubt the honesty of their motives.
I missed the meeting. Did they serve tea and cookies?

Bus loads of families just waiting to come to Sosua but will not until "we rescue the city".

They did not leave out the beach with all the families just waiting to "enjoy the beach".
The beach is dangerous with exposed rock formations and the city has never done one thing to improve the area.
Is there a plan to fix the beach rocks when all the families start pouring into town to enjoy the beach and restaurants?
Not long ago it was put up barriers to block the view of girls in the bars but that was not enough and here we are with plan B

The politicians add large doses of dishonesty to hide the fact that they are morally outraged and that is what this is all about.
Why not be honest and come right out and say it.

As far as I can see this is orchestrated by a bunch of bitter women and their hangers-on who have no clue about plans or futures for the town and care nothing for the residents or business owners.

Many honest businesses are already suffering from these misguided ideas but have no recourse to fight back against what could be considered illegal actions by a corrupt and incapable cabal of folks who never even visit Sosua proper.
As for the red light district etc.,who will compensate those forced against their will to move and what provisions are being made to transport tourists from the hotels,mostly all situated around the PC area?

When you talk with good neighbors hundreds if not thousands of times over the years, one really discuss just about everything there is to discuss about this country.

I have also discussed everything else you mentioned, and their exasperation with the govt. that doesn't seem to do anything about it.

The subject of this thread is Sosua, which is why I only mentioned their comments about Sosua. It is nowhere near being their primary concern, nor do they even discuss it much because well.. Sosua is Sosua.

I think you have a very realistic take on what the root cause is with all of the Sosua activities in the last few years, and the scraps will have to come cheap. The additional investment costs required for needed infrastructure repairs the govt. adds in are sizable amounts.
