That may be the case but that has been the history of the running of government in the country. I am sure down the line, there are greased palms. Ultimately is it about money. I don't blame them. It makes most decisions in this world.

A pretty famous guy, Sigmund Freud , says all of mans decisions are based on sex and money.

I agree, there is surely some money changing hands. There are developers, like CB said, who want the hooker trade gone first. Connections and Kickbacks, it doth work wonders.

But also don't forget the Middle Class and Upper Class CATHOLIC Doms. They are sick of the rep and don't want to be raising their families anywhere near it. And it ain't coming back.

Somebody just started building a wall at Playa Sosua on the beach side of Rt 5. It might just be the kind of wall that a developer hangs a sign that says "Coming Soon........"! Just a guess.

It's about money. Nothing else. Morality has zero to do with it. Morality is something they are hanging their hats on to make it more palatable.

Dominicans don't know it yet but they are going to effectively lose Sosua beach in the near future.

Which is better for Sosua:

Hookers and mongers

~or~

Bricks and mortar tourist development?

I'm not sure a Venn Diagram would show much overlap.

They can Build a wall to hang a coming soon sign , lickety split , but it takes YEARS to build a Sidewalk
which is " for the children " , ....

I think you just proved a point you did not intend to prove Ctrob ..

Im not going to live long enough to see Sosua be transformed into anything other than what it is. A nice little seedy tourist x-pat town. Now after dinner we have to turn left instead of right for our evening entertainment.

Interesting,

The Walled City construction at the so-called red zone has gone from full speed ahead to 'all slow' in one day.
Yesterday dozens of workers, today I just saw two.

Anyone got the inside story?

All those banging (head) on their keyboards about change, if you mean a few bars closed (where some may reopen soon) and some moved to a few meters away, yes that happened, big change.... ! lol

But if that has changed (or will change) Sosua's image or chica situation or change the minds of so called big pocket developers to shovel in their money here, or DR elite perspective of the place, or bring in lots of new tourists or families due to this, I don't think so, unless they (you) are really naive... ?

As far as which bars were closed it is obvious to me, those that were frequented by our Afro American, black, from NY/Boston friends (whatever you want to call them) were targeted. Those mainly had white, German, blonde, blue eyes clienteles were left open... !? This had nothing to do with chica attendance or congregation or bar/restaurant status (don't kid yourself).

And before you ask, no I am not black, and although I don't like their music or smell of cigars and sometimes loud and in your face approach, I am not racist (like some !), and I think what the authorities have done has obvious signs of discrimination and clear racism. I like the idea of live and let live and I think all types should be taken care of and catered for, this was an abhorrent approach by the authorities.

Wait until the US media gets hold of this story properly and the PR sh*t storm that hits DR government will be far worse than when they badly treated Haitians and then had to backtrack on a lot of their absurd plans and projects. In fact I encourage some of those affected and clearly targeted to pass it on as those who did this deserves whatever is coming to them. Nobody cares about Haitians in US or IMF even, but US AA citizens being discriminated and targeted like this will start a huge story....!

As for Oxfam advising IMF and other governments on human trafficking and sex conduct of DR, pleeeeaaase, Oxfam was and is in the center of so many sex abuse allegations (food for sex, and even minors abuse) in Africa and Haiti and some other places they really should hide their face in shame, rather than pointing fingers...

I'm African American and often wonder why we're always all lumped together in one group? I've visited Sosua on occasion, but have mostly stayed away for the last two years because of the exact same element you're referring to. It's more accurately described as a social-economic / class issue than a racial one. Those of us who are better educated and belong to higher social economic classes don't like loud, boisterous and disrespectful behavior either. While in Sosua, I've met other black professionals like myself who are capable of going there and having a good time without calling undue attention to ourselves.

Again, I haven't been over there recently, but if what you're saying is true, and the bars frequented by African Americans were specifically targeted, I can honestly say that I predicted that would happen the last time I was there. I could see the declining quality of the black men visiting Sosua and knew that it would only be a matter of time before steps were taken to discourage them from coming. It would be different if they were spending money, perhaps they would be tolerated, but they are specifically trying NOT to spend money.

However, as to my original point, what you see in Sosua or even in the US mass media isn't an accurate representation of African Americans, it's very lopsided. It would be like me forming an opinion of every caucasian person based upon a trip to West Virginia or rural Texas.

yes it is dark. Easier for me to hide my shame and guilt for exploiting and over indulging.

Not a bad walk during the day; I wonder if the mayor will install street lights.
Would be a good place to get mugged; might wait for a group of brothers walking down and hide behind them.

Thanks for your forthright comments.
When I was involved in business in Sosua I always found the African Americans to be generally great company, polite and well informed with pots of money to party and, as I'm not American myself but from a multi-ethnic background, I have no preconceived bias, which seems to be prevalent in many Americans so I'm pretty well colour blind as far as skin tint goes.

I don't think it's just the standard of AA visitors that's gone down but exists across the whole spectrum of North American visitors, plus the fact the internet is a hard taskmaster.Cuba Dave and his ilk did more to destroy the atmosphere than anyone else I reckon.
The guys today are just carrying on the bragging competition.
As you rightly say, money is tight these days and budgets have to be controlled.Hence the reduced spending power.

It's been a while since MLK but progress over there in good ol' USA is so slow...
