Timber. Denuding the trees across from Sosua Beach

I drove by today for the first time since it started. What a shame, it looks terrible. Those caoba trees fetch big bucks. It's all about the money from the beginning to the end.
caobas, almendras, palm trees.....all gone, no mercy....they left one isolated tree but you will notice passing by that its leaves are already yellow after a couple of days....the big excavators cut its roots. This looks already very sad now and I am so scared that this will look even worse soon. They are now flattening the slope to widen the area next to the road. All this changes a lot the landscape identity of the area yet no question asked, I see nobody speaking about this or providing the people of Sosua and the residents of this area with some information. I know it's private property and they can do whatever they want on their property with the permission of Medioambiente but when it is such a radical intervention (not just a couple of trees) which changes so much the look and feel of a neighborhood and of a whole beach town I guess some more information would not be a such a bad idea, especially if they have good intentions and they plan to build something nice and good looking....this silence raises some concern and fear.

I'd bet there's a lot of locals who know who's doing what and when.

Using the information from the Deslinde Notice which was there few months ago on a sign next to the main road and that I saved on my phone, I managed to get the contact number of one of the developers of this new project, a Dominican entrepreneur and member of the company which deslinded this land lot. I contacted him and he was kind enough to reply to my message and to explain me that there is no plan to build high rise buildings, apparently the whole project is still in a early development phase and there are no imminent plans to build. From what I understood they will build but not so soon and it will not be high rise buildings and it will not cause inconvenience to Los Cerros: that sounded somewhat reassuring to me. I was worried about hundreds of apartments and thousands of new residents in such a small neighborhood as Los Cerros with limited resources and infrastructure but I have been told this will not happen. Trees are gone sadly but at least there should be no more surprises. For what it is worth this is the best information I managed to get, not just hearsay.

It has already caused an inconvenience as they stacked wood and tree limbs partially blocking the road.
They dropped about 12 large trees yesterday. They have cut so many I can see and hear the traffic on the highway below.
If they have no plans to build why are they making a building pad below? And right in the gully. If a big rain comes the silt heading into the ocean will get some attention.
OK I don't like it. Easy solution for me I will relocate within the next year.
At least somewhere that can provide water. Since we are now 5 weeks without in Los Cerros.
And we were wondering where the motoconchos will go to crap now that they cut a new road in their former favorite outdoor outhouse? - well there were two moto guys today (in my two dog walks) crapping (pants down & in plain sight) just below your pool deck Diego. And that is not made up.

And you believed that response? Oh my...
The check is in the mail.
I just reported the information I received and the fact that no high rise buildings will be built is to me at least one less thing to worry about.....as all the residents of Los Cerros I have much to loose if the area is overdeveloped , these people own this piece of the land, they have permission to cut the trees from Medioambiente and as long as the competent authorities approve they plans they can do what they want. What's wrong with the fact that one of the developers/owners told me that the residents of Los Cerros should not worry? If it is a lie we will find out soon and there is not much we can do about it, if it is a genuine answer as I hope at least is some information about what's going on. If you have better suggestions then do something rather than trolling those of at least are trying to get information and report it without any bias.

Bill you sound very disappointed but you see nobody is paying attention to what's going on here, just few residents of Los Cerros ...what can we do? At this stage, with all the tree cutting being alredy done, just hoping that things will no be worse and that they stick to their word that no overdevelopment will be made.
PS
Next time you see people defecating "under my pool deck" please give me a call or text me rather than posting this valuable piece of information on a public forum.

Nothing, it's private property. Are they doing something illegal? Even if they do something that's hurts the value of their property, it's theirs to do with as they please. If I suggested that moto conchos should be allowed to crap on your pool deck, you would tell me it's "your property" and to mind my own business. Right? It goes both ways.

Those Mahogany trees are protected though .. how the F did they get approval to tear all of them down ?
Political connections or just greasing people , or just ILLEGALLY CUTTING them down .
disgusting .

I'm just assuming they got approval unless it's shown otherwise. It's a really conspicuous location to do illegal logging. Approval based on "betterment of the community"? Similar to taking property by imminent domain. I believe there's an approval process to remove trees - otherwise no one could ever build anything.

Yes they are parking their motos in the road below your pool and stepping a couple feet into the bushes. They used to crap down near the taxi stand turn. I shouted at the man.

Apparently the owner is the husband of Former Mayor Iliana Newman, or so one resident who spoke to them has relayed

They're not always protected as furniture is made from them. Yesterday, I was told by an older Dominican gentleman that the big mahogany trees are selling for 2-300,000 pesos each to furniture makers. It's all about the money.

Yes.....sometimes I see people peeing with their pants down right even on the main road.....once I saw the same scene in El Batey at the end of Petro Clisante by the park next to the casino and I was passing there with my family.....it seems people cannot just hold it a little longer....that's disturbing but it has not much to do with the development of Los Cerros

I would not be surprised if that land has been in her family since the 1940's, her grandfather was Manfred Neumann a DORSA settler.

That would certainly be fascinating if it were true.
but then why is it now in her HUSBANDS name ? did she transfer it to him ?
It fails the sniff test , but if someone can find out that would be of interest .
