Suicide should also be considered, though unlikely. If the person suffered from chronic depression, that's one type sunny DR can't fix. If they aren't on meds, they can do some harm to themselves.

There have been times in my life when I have fantasized about simply disappearing.
Dropping off the face of the earth...so to speak.
Starting all over in a new place where nobody knows who I am...anonymous.
Free to be whatever I want.
For some strange reason this situation gives me those vibes.
Wherever he is and whatever he is doing...
I wish him well.
I hope for him the best.
I suspect that is what quite a few posters here on dr1 did hence the anonymity on here. I half way did that back in 2002-2006 but kept in touch with a few people including my mum. I was first in Cuba and then came to the DR and did my residency papers without even going back to Denmark.

I don’t want to joke about it but sun and alcohol could work better than meds. At least for a while.

I've seen it posted all over FB. So sad. I do think the police have been notified.

Oh, I always came alone to Santo Domingo.
I came alone to Santo Domingo. At first I traveled with some Canadians I knew in Cuba and then alone.

With this guy I also get that vibe that he wanted to disappear. Maybe he is not even in the DR anymore. One can only speculate though.

Magnús Kristin Magnússon was last interviewed at the airport in the Dominican Republic on Sunday, September 10. It is believed that Magnús Kristinn went to the airport by taxi but never boarded the plane that was supposed to fly to Frankfurt. Magnúsar's sister, Rannveig Karlsdóttir, has drawn attention to her brother's disappearance. The police in Iceland are looking into the case, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' citizen service has been in Rannveigu's hands.

Icelander wanted in the Dominican Republic

"He is registered with Interpol, where he is reported missing," says Rannveig.
Magnús is known to have gone to a casino before heading to the airport. Asked if it is possible that it played a role in his disappearance, Rannveig replies:
"We don't know. The little we know is that there were no huge withdrawals from his bank account. If that's the case, he hasn't been gambling for large amounts of money," says Rannveig.
Rannveig fears that more could play a role in Magnús's disappearance. Thus, he has struggled with a mental illness that can impair his judgement.
"Maybe it is too." Misreading situations and making impulsive decisions. Getting very upset when the flight was delayed. We don't really know how he could have reacted," says Rannveig, adding: "This causes us a lot of concern."

Hi everyone.
He did not have an online girlfriend to go visit over there but he did not tell anyone about why he was visiting the country. He would not choose to disappear since he has a son and a stepson in Iceland who he cares for a lot.
He used his card for food and such up until the 10th of september but there are no transactions after that. That's the same day he missed his flight back home. In the days before he possibly stayed in one of the hotel/casino in the area close to parque Eugenio María de Hostos.

There are rumours that he went to a cockfight some time after he missed his flight or on that same day.
Where would one go to see something like that in Santa Domingo?
And are there any official information about such events in SD?
Do a lot of tourist attend these things or would people notice him?

Yes you do but who checks that? You could put anything you want without a cross check. Meaningless...I think.
Maybe but at least, it would be a start when someone goes missing.

Cockfights are a Dominican thing, very few tourists visit those events, no tourist agency advertises them and you'd need to have a local to show you where the gallerias are. You said "he went to a cockfight some time after he missed his flight or on that same day" and that is very strange. Normally if you miss your flight you're in no mood to go visit a galleria, all you think about is getting the next available flight outta there, also even if you have a late evening flight it's doubtful you'd go anywhere far away from your hotel so you don't miss the flight. There is official info about cockfights (the roosters info, the schedule, the match up...) if the galleria is an "official" place (cockfighting is like a pro league in DR) but there is no record of attendance so you wouldn't be able to know if he was there or not.

Have you tried contacting the Hostal de Francisco de Assisi? That's the closest hostel to the park and given that he didn't use a credit card for wherever he stayed, that seems the first one to check out.

I checked and could not find a phone number on google maps or booking.com. But I would check there first. Oh yea, and everything FF1 said about cockfightin in the above post is spot on. I seriously doubt there is one close to the Colonial Zone, which is the vicinity he is purported to have stayed at.

Thanks for the info. I'm speculating with the time of when he might have gone to the cockfight. Since these are just rumours I can't confirm if he went to one or not.
I know normally one would just try to find a new flight after he misses his flight but nothing in this whole trips is normal.
Is it common for people (or tourists for that matter) to get robbed if they're traveling alone in the city?

I am not discounting he hooked up with a chica who set him up, but then again, did he flash items of particular value. Where was his card used prior to the disappearance? Again, I still don't know many that come to Santo Domingo alone for a vacation. It's not a great destination, relative to the beauty of the countryside, beaches, resorts etc

On that Form , I used to intentionally put the Address of a Grocery Store with a Fake Hotel name , did that for years ... Just in case someone at the Airport was of Bad Character.
Only my Family knew exactly where I was staying . no one at Immigration ever questioned it .. Just repeat it as you wrote it down.

The problem here is perhaps this Man did not tell his family his true destination or with whom he is staying .. this is a big mistake ..
there has to be at least ONE person who you TRUST , and should tell where you plan to be after you Land . So at least they have a starting point , just in case.

Edit
So wait ,, This is Another Mental Illness Story ?
This guy may be wandering around anywhere .. the sky is the limit now .

PS. If it was just robbery gone wrong the body would've already been found. The robbers are almost always on motos and if things don't go according to their plan and they have to shot the victim they'll try to get outta there asap, they won't take the body and transport it somewhere to hide it.

cock fights are some of the safest places to be on the island. You will not be robbed going or coming from that venue. It is a sanctuary zone. Unless you accuse someone of cheating or stealing, then you will most certainly sustain an injury.
