Resignation

I'm officially resigning from predicting when this storm is going to leave us.
I've been watching Sat pix for years and usually can predict the coming weather better than the local weatherman, but Noel's all SNAFUed.
It's just ain't moving.
What's with that???????????
4 wheel disc brakes with ABS?

It's bucketing down again in SD, but at least we've had power for most of the day.

We'll see about school tomorrow - the Ministry is still saying schools will re-open - but we're going to play it by ear. We went out at midday and traffic was slightly lighter than a normal weekday, but a lot of people were out and about. Not that much trees and debris, some flooded areas but nothing dramatic - apart from being very soggy the city looked more or less normal.

I suspect that the Ministry was thinking the same as I was, that the storm would have been completely gone by now, and were fooled when they said that classes would resume on Wednesday.
I think that classes will be canceled tomorrow too.
At least, that's what I would tell my mommy if I had to go to school tomorrow.;)

And speaking of people who should keep their mouth shut, guess what happened the moment I posted about having power most of the day....

Just had a torrential downpour and storm in Juan Dolio. it is still chucking it down an hour later. Strong winds too. Towns like Ramon Santana near San Pedro were nearly finished today and will definitely be completely finished after this downpour, and looking at the latest satellite it is not over yet. We are expecting rain all night here. According to my husband - the poor people will be finished. Sobering thought.

Here in Juan Dolio no real damage - just water everywhere.

Would you mind explaining what you mean, when you say "finished"?

Around Santo Domingo today

It's still raining in Bella Vista, although not as heavily as before. The power has just come back on after a long outage. On my travels around Santo Domingo today I saw many fallen trees, especially in Gazcue, but there were work crews out on the Malecon tidying up, and on just one trip from one end of Ave Bolivar to the other I saw three electricity company cranes working on the lines, so hopefully things will get back to normal soon.

It sounds like Rte Duarte RD1 is open from the north to SD but treacherous? can someone confirm or provide a useful link for information about this? If I can?t drive back (from Samana) to SD tomorrow, I?ll have to look into alternatives (flying?), so if anyone has any useful info, please post it tonight, thanks very much.

If you take your time, the highway is open. Latest reports say that there are two bridges that are being worked on and all traffic is using ?the other one?....so that means some serious traffic jams and dangerous situations if you do not pay attention.

Can anyone tell me if San Pedro de Macoris is getting a lot of the storm and what is the time frame before I can call and speak to our son. IF someone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it because I am worried sick.
Thank You

he was helping with relief efforts today. Delivering food - rice, beans etc. Difficult as as he said they have lost not only the houses but also all their cooking implements, so hard to cook. By'finished' I meant they have lost everything apart from the clothes on their backs. For those who have jobs tomorrow is pay day, so that will help a little, but as you know all the money is usually gone by lunchtime! At least they won't have to pay rent. The talk in the colmado today was about how no one knew this was coming, but as everyone said, even if there had been announcements to leave areas near rivers etc no one would have taken any notice. So I anticipate thousands of people have lost everything and have nowhere to live. Lets see how the government relief effort works - hopefully better than New Orleans.

Phone lines both land and mobile are working here locally, although my mother from Uk has had problems getting through. Probably international lines are busy. San Pedro itself is fine - I was shopping there in the market today, it is some of the neighbouring barrios where there are problems. No reports of anyone missing or injured in San Pedro. It is still raining heavily, but the electricity is still on tonight (touch wood). I am sure all is fine and you should be able to phone soon.

Tonight (10:30) the news shows on most of the stations are focusing on just how high the water got. On the road to SFM, the water was over the bridges, way over. In other areas, like Matilda says, there is very little left. These are men and women with so little to start with: ?I have three children and no job? ; I have five children a wife and no job...same old story.

I think we will see as much misery as we did after Georges. No kidding. There was a lot of flooding.

All their houses have been washed away?
Are these real houses or shanties?

School off until Friday

My sons are telling me that the Ministry of Education has extended the suspension of classes until Friday, 2 November. You should check with your school in the morning, or listen to the late evening news to check the accuracy of this.
