This should have been the second post in this thread, it makes me want to kiss you. There must be other selfish posters keeping gems like this for themselves. You got to share the good news guys.

U have to explain where this "give-me-something-mentality" come from. U have a wonderful country full of opportunities, so why?

Looks like we are having a dessert buffet now. I tried to give Chiri rep points but the system won't let me.......cuz I've been a fan of his posts for a while.

Chiri is a lady, and one of my dearest friends.

I think that most of those who 'do' know many of the others on this board (sometimes personally) who also 'do' and we can tell a lot by how people write BUT......most of us either come from cultures where it isn't done to tell people about it or we're secure enought that we have no need to. As Mike says

they do not need to share such as News on a forum or a headline in the newspapers.

Aside from this... this topic starts to feel like I have to justify why I live here... and I don't... I worked for my money, and chose to come and live here, and I owe nobody any explanation or justification...

From the bottom of my heart; thanks for whatever you are doing to benefit Quisqueya in a long lasting way. Sorry that you feel this thread is demanding justification for your presence in DR but I think this is more indicative of your state of mind & the way you conduct your live in this country rather than my original intentions

And because I start to feel like this, we maybe should start a topic of "What benefit do we get from people of the DR, living in the States or Europe"... same stupid question...

What benefits do the US gets from us?, let's see; we must be around 1.5 millions folks, we pay our bills, we shop at the local's store (that rin tin tin must be familiar eh?), we consume a lot and don't give me the "US is a mature economy" crap, cuz 70% of the US economy is consumer's expending.

Back in the 80's, we took what was a decaying business at the hand of the locals (bodegas) and literally made them cash cow (without selling drugs). At the beginning of the 90's we owned about 90% of the bodegas and most of the supermarkets.

We perform dangerous, bitchy jobs that few people have the cojones to do; like being taxi drivers.

If you ever come to NY don't be deceived by the "Spanish Food" sign in front of restaurants, in NYC Spanish food=Dominican food cuz we own most of the restaurant that serve that type of food here.

We own most of the beauty salons in NYC, in fact; Dominican hair stylist are in such a high demand that I've personally seen several beauty salons owned by non-Dominicans with a "Dominican style" sign in their front, without having one single Dominican personnel.

We are partially responsible for the real estate boom experienced by NY and NJ in the last two decades.

I could give you more but I'm tired.

A friendly reminder; there's 111 millions Mexicans waiting for a chance to shop & pay their bills in the US.

Who's asking you for anything, DR Mvp?. I have the feeling that you enjoy the suffering endured by many Dominicans.

PLEASE don't get drawn in to an argument with DR Mpe Vacara, I get the impression from his/her posts, that he/she is just spoiling for a fight with someone ....... anyone. Your thread is worth far more than winning a small argument!!

My take on this subject is very simple ............ I LIVE in the Dominican Republic & enjoy my life here amongst the Dominicans themselves. I will involve myself with anything & everything I possibly can to enrich MY life here & hopefully that means the enriching of Dominican children AND some adults too. Discussion is my Modus Operadi rather than 'lording it' by donations or insisting things are done MY WAY (with the exception of time keeping I'm afraid - I do so hate being kept waiting for meetings/appointments!! ;)).

Five minutes every three or four hours to 'chat' with someone in the streets is no great loss to my daily schedule - I can always make that up BUT it is important to integrate with anyone who is prepared to chat with me! The Haitian workers in the building plots sweating cobs in this heat are only too willing to be spoken with for a few moments - it makes them feel acknowledged as being human beings sometimes. Guards at gates/security entrances get acknowledged & oft times spoken to in some ribald fashion that creates a small 'bonding' (Who knows WHEN I might need their help!!??). Hey, (just to prove I can) I even talk with my more influential neighbours about things like local & national politics, the latest idea or waste of money scheme ............. ANYTHING to let them know I am INVOLVED with their daily lives too.

But it is The CHILDREN who give me the best chances to educate myself. Seeing THEIR dreams for the future fills me with (reserved) optimism that this country can & WILL become a less corrupt & more open to learning country in the future. EVERYONE should try to give the kids a few moments of their busy day ........... just chatting or playing with Dominican Kids. If you want an introduction to Integracion Juvenil, just give me a call or PM me & I'll organise an outing there! ~ Grahame.

Vacara,

And perhaps we knew it already! Many of us on here are aware of the "silent heros" who work like stink to integrate and generally do good amongst the DR community. ;)

It is a shame that you feel that it needs to be broadcast loud and clear in some sort of mutual back slapping exercise. What good does that do?

You also make me feel that any benefit has to be of earth shattering proportion if it is to meet with your approval.

But there you go.......

And now the Dominican boom is coming to NC I would like you see here in Raleigh the growing amount of small business owned by Dominicans.
Most the Dominicans here we are homeowners.

Well Sr Vaca, u started this thread by asking the board a what many would consider a ignorant question, then continued writing all kind of mish mash.

Anyway, I think u misunderstand many of us. We like DR. It is a extremely beautiful country, some very genuine people and it is imperfect and sometimes thats not a bad thing. In the DR u live, in many first world countries u stay alive... Having some cold ones and then riding ur bike...well that would not work

But DR is a run by donkey politicians and the extremely wealthy people mostly think about themselves. Period. Of course there are a few exceptions but they only confirm this rule. The latest example of stupidity and corruption amongst these higher society great thinkers was when Brugal got the permit to transport 5 HUGE tanks from the south coast to Puerto Plata. It took them 10 days and they blocked traffic and destroyed things in every village; roads, signs, transformers, cars, cables etc etc. But it was kind of funny to watch :cheeky:

I rest my case, now u can continue bashing gringos and write ur mish mash.

Another nice day coming up.

don't give me the "US is a mature economy" crap, cuz 70% of the US economy is consumer's expending.

I wouldn't call that statement crap. Why would consumer spending not be a part of a mature economy? The point I was trying to make was simply this. Since the DR is not the US, basic needs are different.

I try to do (like to think I'm doing) something useful everyday but I don't see any reason to broadcast that on a public message board.

That's the way it usually is Chiri, those that do don't talk about it and those that talk about don't do

Lacking a "safety network" (Welfare)that is present in most European and North American Countries, practically anyone who has moved to the DR is providing some sort of a positive input in regards to the economy, they have to spend money to survive if nothing else

........if any. How do Dominican society benefits from your presence?, even if expats only impact their surrounding neighbors.

My maybe unprofessional but first hand answer would be - We pass to Dominicans our hard earned life/retirement savings. If not us and our money the majority of the Dominican populations would have to go into some REAL work. Agriculture, construction, plants-factories. No more beach all day, no more domino all day, no more salsa-bachata-merengue till 5 A.M. Hard work. 9-5. M-F.

Like all of us worked in our USAs and Europe`s.

Or - they only post about it in context or - as in this thread - when specifically asked.

These suggestions are a bit unfair to the posters who have posted details of what they do, in response to the OP.

BTW I'm not singling you out, IslandDreaming - there have been several posts in this vein.

I actually answered thinking it was part of a general and thoughtful discussion, but it actually turned into a competition "Who can say they do the most to benefit the DR" and judged by the OP. :ermm:

A shame......

I would say its a good idea to let people know something of what you do and the organisations you work for and how other people can help and get involved if they feel they want to -on the other hand there are fake missionaries etc around, so at the end of the day you have to make your own judgement

Sorry, again my intent and outcome differ. I was not referring to anyone here, simply a general observation of people needing validation

I'm sure none of this is directed at any particular poster, especially as the ones who have posted about their contributions are not known for gratuitous bragging!

But not surprisingly, as a result of all this, one of the posters concerned has asked me to delete her post.

its sort of self defeating not to tell people what you do for charitable purposes, as you need the support of the general public, but I suppose you have to be strong enough to be ready for the people ready to knock you down

At first people responded in general terms, but that was clearly not enough - the OP wanted specifics.
