Hey, without foreign influence there would be now plastic chairs to sit on. My 2 cents.

Your two cents is likely to be subjected to deflation (or is it inflation? :cheeky:). The Taino were making wooden furniture hundreds of years before the Spanish arrived, let alone before the more recent foreign expats arrived. Do you think that Dominican carpenters didn't have and don't have the skills to make furniture and that somehow they needed foreign influence?

It is all too easy on a thread of this nature to let factual knowledge be cast aside as people, probably unwittingly, look for reasons to justify their attitude.

Vacara, what I think you have done is to enable people to expose what might be to them an unconscious internalisation of 'first world superiority'. And I think we should all be grateful to you for the opportunity to examine our own attitudes. Because, in many cases, this is pretty deep-seated stuff and people are not even aware that they hold some of these attitudes.

Well some sense of humour helps, but I am kind of tired of the so called educated dominicans bashing foreign input. Soy dominicano y ya...

Such a beautiful country, such a waste bc the corrupted politicians and the wealthy families that have no interest in making DR into a better country.

Worlds shortest book - dominican (make that latin american) inventions? Corruption and caba?as?

e pa lante que vamos...k vaina. Really, don't give the "Grin Go" the blame for ur stupidity.

The weather, the nature, the ocean and some very nice genuine people without opportunities - the only reasons to love DR.

Hey, come on, no one is suggesting that.

Personally, I love the Dominican Republic, and I also love most Dominicans I have met here. In general terms, I have thoroughly enjoyed living here. However, I am not stupid, nor am I without vision or perception.

I am not blind to the fact that there are times when I have to be especially careful here, and for many reasons.

One of those reasons is that there are some Dominicans who assume I am wealthy, simply because I am a gringo. Those few Dominicans make it difficult for all gringos, and they also help to give a unwarranted bad-name to other Dominicans.

Those few "bad apples" believe that it their right to redistribute that wealth. That is simply a fact of life, and I readily admit the same can be said of some inhabitants in cities around the world.

However, the fact that is true elsewhere does not make it untrue here. It is not an insult directed at Dominicans in general, it is just a fact of life. I don't feel guilty about the precautions I take, and I will continue to keep my guard up, both here and elsewhere around the world.

Very insightful post. Now let me give you my version of the worlds shortest book; "How Americans went to the moon without the help of the Germans".

YOU are tired? How on earth do you think they (the Dominicans) feel when they see foreigners living in their land who appear to do little but complain? And automatically assume that they (the Dominicans) are a bunch of barely literate 'lesser mortals'? In your words

die dumme dominikanishe

And maybe aren't even prepared to examine their own assumptions about those 'lesser mortals'?

Do you not think Dominicans could get tired of that?

why are people anyways on such topics start to pray:
*** americans brought this and germans did that and the british queen is ugly and the australians have the cangoroos*** etc etc etc.
maybe my education and upbringing can not hold up with all those high educated and intelligent and since decades at home before moving to DR successful other expats and i am just a rare/unique stupid and successless spezies of that planet.
sorry Mom,
i have in no way any complain about that,
in case i can be reborn i really wanna be your son again and i want you to raise me the same way you did in this life.
what the heck it is worth where we came from, who raised us, the name of any stu.. college with 10 years prior famous college football players, who invented the drive for the fisrt moon shuttle, where Albert Einstein been born(hey, the bastard with the cool looking hair had just a IQ of 148, seriously), who gives a damn that americans claim to be the world champions in Baseball, Brazilians are the gods of soccer(yes, that's a stement from me, a german ex soccer player), my buddy Michael Schuhmacher been driving a racecar better at age of 15 than Senna ever could, who gives a damn on such stuff???
and for the topic of this thread,
what the heck is it worth at the moment an foreigner arrives on the Island???
right,
absolutely nothing!!!
because the value for the local community on this thread and for humanity at all of that Expat moving over here on the Isle is simply measured what he does/doesn't do/starts/proceeds etc etc at the moment he/she arrives on the sunny side of caribbean Island life.
there may be a working class austrian coming over, just a simple 1000$$$ in his pocket on arrival, but the kinda person that is always willing to work to manage his food and drinks and simple housing, he ma start to work with a local company as a carpenter for example, the 1K$$$ brought in of course been blown away within the first few weeks of sweet island life, for the sweeties and the parties and the sweties and the ...
no prob with him, he will work his a$$ off at a local carpenters shop and make the money to pay the rent for a lil wooden shack in Veron and his food and drinks etc, living and mingling with locals from day one on, he is at least from the beginning a contributor to the local community by my own standards, no univercity grade or ex-football team water servant grade needed.

and here may be that harvard absolvent, bringing a 200.000.-US$$$ over here in the pocket, leaving the fisrt 100K on that big Condo deal due the great connection with that good looking chic from that In-Bar at the corner and her by incident stepping by lawyer chulo, living of course from the beginning in that state of the art supermodern and friends at home jellous making appartment for cheapy 2K a month (sure the new partner chic and lawyer helped to get that incredible great rate compared to the same at home in Paris City), and of course he dine's each eve at the top dining spots of the area where great top shots like himself get served lobster and top chilenian housewine for incredibly cheap 100 bucks per person, sure the chic and lawyer and the by that time appearing 'good business friends' are also invited to add to the bill.
yes,
just a few months later i met that power brooker styled top shot at the corner bar, not that he ever been a big shot of much words, no, not with that education and upcoming in life, so he restricted the conversation to just a few words:
"can ya borrow me a 500 pesos???"
heck,
the same idiot watching down from above on so many people at the same spot during the prior months, going down and ask the fisherman for some pesos to buy the next drink??????
right,
i don't get it,
maybe i am just not educated enough to understand the point of such,
but hey, better stu and happy, eehh?
both mentioned above are well known persons by myself here in Punta Cana, the ivory coast for all those who didn't make it somewhere else,
the Carpenter i can proudly announce has today's his own Carpenter's place with a fix contract of 3 nice big resorts, he is doing very well and i enjoy to watch him once in a while when he takes the time out to party on the street, never at a fancy bar tho. we know each others but we never made friends neither, something not easy with me, i don't blame him, i am the shy gy on such. he made his way, starting with absolutely nothing in hands, no more preparation than a basic european school and the will to do.
the story came to my mind tonight because i saw him yesterday in higuey when i did some shopping at Iberia with my wifey, he did not see me, but i saw him and his wifey and their 2 kids, 1 is his and the other one he decided to be his, they looked very good to me and by the full shopping cart i would guess he is contributing a good bunch to the local community.
the Harvard power brooker coming in with the big bucks been also a real person i met here, but i did not see him or hear anything about him since a longer while, maybe it is just the stock markets who are a bit weak at the moment, a bit of a world wide crisis, todo lento pana.
what education and the big talks about great uni certificates, masters, home family names etc etc are worth compared to the good will of a Man poor but in the right way raised by mommy???
you tell me
Mike

absolutely correct,
no stu gringos started this thread, just a local who does not need the certificate of an big-bro univercity to be allowed to do so, aside of the fact that his written conversation sounds to me, the stu fisherman, much more worth to read than some wannabe meaningless/clueless answers
but some rare spezies like yourselves tried to get involved.
if you wanna discuss something, you can do that right here, just stay on a educated line of adults,
if you don't like to discuss such topic or in case you feel uncomfortable with something growing over the capacity of your own brain you have the right of a free DR1-bord Man and STFU and just scroll down to a other theme that may fit your educational capabilities better.
have a great eve, Sir

to go back to the original thread...

What do we, foreigners, have to offer the DR...

The most obvious of course is, money... expats coming to retire here, expats fleeing their own country for all kinds of reasons, etc...

This money provides income for all kinds of locals... house-personell, waiters, cooks, etc... etc...

The second thing is knowledge.... whether it is in business, science, medicine...

Did anybody ever wonder why China is the economic power it is today???... very simply... because they had cheap labour (sounds familiar???) and they had the brains to allow "foreigners" to co-manage their factories and they learned and "stole" all of their skills... Pretty smart guys...

The US today is what it is, because they are a melting pot of all kinds of cultures, and they profited from this...

So, once again, I return to my firm belief... Every nation, every ethnic group, every level of education, has something to contribute to make this place, called earth, a nice place to live...

And a country, place, town, region, etc... which decides they only want their original people/ancestors over there... is doomed....

Well, we spend money, pay our light bills, don't have any chickens or roosters in the yard, and we don't play boom boxes at full volume. We discipline our children and don't cut ahead of other people standing in line. We drive sanely and consider a two-lane road to be just that. We don't race by pedestrians on motorcycles and grab purses off women's shoulders.

Are these the sort of benefits you had in mind when you posted your question?

This has to be the most arrogant, ignorant and stupid post I've ever seen in DR1. Show me a country where SOME of it's people doesn't have chickens in their yard (not that this is a bad thing, specially if you move to the country side), mug other people and drive like if hell is coming behind them. Just because you listen to Mozart or Beethoven in a "subtle" volume doesn't make you better. Also because you spend money on the DR doesn't give you the F.... right to look down on them and consider yourself a superior specimen. The "big shot in the small pond" phenomena is really showing among the expat community in the DR.

Again, I concur with Vacara about the ex-pats he mentioned have really integrated and are a big contribution to our country.

Some of you people need to get a real job or find a better hobby. It seems like anyone can throw any stupid topic and the thread will reach 60 pages long.
Some expats live real lives within real dominicans and provide important services. No wonder these expats are always connected and always doing something productive, seems like the rest of you folks just sit around to discuss another meaningless topic to death.
AZB

I think you didn't read the whole thread AZB, I for one consider you one of the expats who do contribute a lot to the DR, even though you come out sometimes as a prick. Yo creo que el sombrero NO era para ti y te lo pusiste.
