The hurricane prediction team head by Dr. William Gray announced that the season wont be as bad as forecast in early June. In the revised forecast and final update for the year, the Colorado State University team is calling for 11 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. An average year during the period 1950-1990 has seen 9.3 tropical storms, 5.8 hurricanes and 2.2 major hurricanes (those with wind speeds above 110 mph). The team says the Caribbean basin faces a possibility of landfall by one or major storms about 10 percent above the past century’s average. Thus, it will again be an above average hurricane year and everyone should be prepared. For more information on Dr. Gray’s forecasts, see http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/PR/releases/news/gray0800.html
