Free market for transport rates

The director of the Oficina de Tránsito Terrestre (OTT) favors that taxis and conchos (multi-fare paying taxis), and minibuses be allowed to set their own rates. He says that now that the Petroleum Law is in effect, that pegs the price of fuel locally to international market prices, fares should be let to fluctuate more frequently. Antonio Reynoso told El Caribe newspaper that he is requesting a meeting with all institutions that are related to public transport to create a coordinating entity. This would be made up by the OTT, the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET), the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (in charge of applying the Petroleum Law), and taxi unions. The idea is to revise fares every month. When asked about recent fare increases, President Mejía said he would not intervene in the setting of fares. He said the role of the government is to mediate. He suggested that users seek savings by taking the OMSA buses, that are operated by the government, and that continue to offer service at RD$3.00 for long routes.
