Medical consulting services and elective surgeries were paralyzed in all of the hospitals in Santo Domingo yesterday, Monday 27 May, as the doctors, nurses, bio-analysts, pharmacists and other health workers went on strike for 12 hours, in response to a call made by health workers’ unions.
They are calling for a salary increase, payment of all pensions, improved travel and overtime incentives and better distribution of health insurance services.
A similar strike will be held in the north of the country today, Tuesday 28 May, followed by the south on Wednesday 29 May.
During an interview with the media at the children’s hospital, Dominican Medical Association (CMD) president Amarilis Herrera said there was 100% support for the strike and that only they would only be treating emergencies. In the meantime, patients arriving for their hospital appointments were forced to reschedule.
