When everyone is complaining of JetBlue’s poor service, the company announces it is buying Spirit. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2024. The purchase if approved would make the airline the fifth largest in the United States. Jet Blue carries the most travelers between the United States and the Dominican Republic.
JetBlue executives argue the purchase would fast-track its growth by giving it access to more Airbus jetliners and pilots to help it compete with carriers such as American, Delta, United and Southwest.
“We have two priorities: one is to get this deal closed and get the airline integrated and build a bigger JetBlue,” JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes said in an interview on Thursday, 28 July 2022. “Secondly to run a reliable operation in the meantime.”
