Ministry of Tourism to boost Santiago city brand

The Ministry of Tourism commits to invest RD$250 million to promote and develop the tourism destination Santiago, the country’s second-largest city. The second largest city of the Dominican Republic has an inner-city international airport and is a booming medical tourism destination.

Tourism Minister David Collado was in Santiago on Monday, 5 December 2022, when he committed to invest the RD$250 million in Santiago. Of the total, RD$40 million is allocated to promote and support cultural activities in the city, including the February carnival. Another RD$10 million will be used to design the Santiago city brand.

RD$200 million is targeted to renovate the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration and the historic center. The monument towers over a city rotunda where cultural and entertainment activities are organized. The Cluster Santiago Destino Turístico will present the proposal for renovating cultural buildings.

Collado announced that on 17 and 18 December, the “Tourism in Every Corner” program of the Ministry of Tourism will carry out activities in Santiago.

In Santiago, Collado signed agreements with leading tourism and business entities. Those signing included Ramón Paulino of Clúster Santiago Destino Turístico; Germán Ulises Polanco, president of the Santiago Hotel Association; Saúl Abreu of the Association for the Development of Santiago (APEDI); Teófilo Gómez, general administrator of the Cibao International Airport; Ángel Hernández, of Hoteles Hodelpa; and Reinaldo Peguero, of the Council for the Strategic Development of Santiago.
