Bani bishop resigns; will go to work in Barcelona

One of the most outspoken priests in the Dominican Republic, 62-year old Victor Masalles announced Pope Francisco has accepted his resignation from his position as bishop in the Bani Diocese. Barcelona-born, Masalles had requested permission to be reassigned to the Diocese of Barcelona.

The Vatican officially reported: The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Bani, Dominican Republic diocese, presented by Bishop Victor Emilio Masalles Pere.

The Roman Catholic Church in the Dominican Republic announced that Monsignor Faustino Burgos Brisman would replace Masalles in Bani.

Masalles was appointed to the Bani position in December 2016. He is a graduate in economics from Intec University in Santo Domingo where he studied before undertaking pastoral studies. He was ordained priest in 1991.

He has maintained a strong and vocal stand against the passing of the three exceptions to the ban on abortions in the Penal Code revision.
